Samaleswari SC Prepare for Historic Rourkela Home Debut Against Dempo SC in Indian Football League

Making their first appearance in front of home supporters, Samaleswari SC will look to secure their maiden points in the Indian Football League 2026-27 when they host Goan heavyweights Dempo SC on November 5. Both teams arrive after dramatic opening-weekend victories or defeats decided in stoppage time.
Rourkela is set to witness a significant moment in its football history as Samaleswari SC prepare for their first-ever home match in the Indian Football League (IFL) 2026-27. The Odisha-based debutants will welcome five-time national champions Dempo SC to the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium on Thursday, November 5, hoping to turn the occasion into their first points of the campaign.
The fixture carries importance beyond the league standings. Samaleswari's participation provides a national platform for football talent from Odisha, with the club keen to build a stronger local football ecosystem through exposure to top-level competition.
The match will be telecast live on DD Sports and streamed on the Unite8 YouTube Channel, Z5 and WAVES App.
Samaleswari SC began their maiden IFL campaign with a narrow 2-3 defeat against former I-League champions Gokulam Kerala FC in Kozhikode. Despite going two goals behind, the debutants showed considerable character to fight back and level the contest before conceding a decisive goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
Argentine forward Pereyra Diaz was among the standout performers, repeatedly testing the opposition goalkeeper before converting a late penalty. Winger Sahil Harijan also impressed with his driving runs and creativity down the left flank.
The comeback demonstrated the team's attacking potential, although the late concession highlighted the need for greater concentration in decisive moments. Head coach Abdul Azim Siddique believes the opportunity to play ten home matches in Odisha can make a significant difference to football development in the region.
"I am very happy that the IFL is here in Rourkela because the organic talent developed in Odisha previously did not have a platform and had to go to Kolkata or other states to play," Siddique said. He revealed that the squad includes ten Odisha players, including five graduates from the Maa Samaleswari Sports Academy in Sambalpur. Local players Vicky Oram, Roshan Panna, Samir Murmu and Sahil Harijan are also part of the team.
The squad combines this local contingent with five foreign players and 14 footballers who have represented India at various national-team levels. Siddique believes that bringing national-level football to the region can inspire young players who might otherwise have limited opportunities to watch the sport at this level.
Kiyam Amarjit calls for home support
Midfielder Kiyam Amarjit Singh, the former captain of India's FIFA U-17 World Cup team, also emphasised the importance of the occasion for the region. "Having the IFL take place for the first time in Rourkela and Sambalpur is a great platform for football in the region," he said.
He added that watching local Odia players compete alongside international signings from countries such as Argentina and Ghana could help build a stronger sporting culture. For Samaleswari, the home debut offers an opportunity to connect with supporters and establish a local identity. A strong turnout at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium could provide the team with an important lift against one of the league's established clubs.
Dempo SC also experienced late drama in their opening fixture, but unlike Samaleswari, the Goan side emerged with all three points. The Golden Eagles defeated fellow debutants FC Bengaluru United 1-0 in Fatorda, courtesy of an eighth-minute stoppage-time header from Ghanaian defender Uzziel Yaw Asomaning Budu.
Dempo dominated possession for large periods, controlling approximately 70 per cent of the ball and completing nearly 250 passes in the first half alone. However, they struggled to convert their territorial advantage into goals against a disciplined Bengaluru defence. Budu eventually made the difference, combining his defensive responsibilities with the decisive attacking contribution. Bagkar provided creativity through his runs down the left, while goalkeeper Bhattacharjee produced an important second-half intervention to preserve the clean sheet.
Head coach Samir Naik acknowledged that his side needed to improve its finishing despite being satisfied with the overall performance. "We had good ball possession, created several chances, and stayed organised defensively to get the three points," Naik said. He added that he expected the team to improve as its new players became more accustomed to their roles.
Naik was careful not to underestimate Samaleswari, pointing to the Odisha side's comeback against Gokulam Kerala. "All teams in this league are equal and there are no favourites. Samaleswari were 2-0 down in their first match, fought back to 2-2, and only lost in injury time, and they have good players who have proven themselves at the ISL level," he said.
Dempo defender Pruthvesh Pednekar also expressed confidence following the opening victory, saying the squad was focused on executing the coach's plans and bringing home another three points.
The match presents an interesting tactical contrast. Dempo demonstrated their ability to control possession and patiently build attacks, while Samaleswari showed that they can be dangerous when they find attacking momentum, particularly in the latter stages of a match.
Both teams were involved in stoppage-time drama on the opening weekend. Samaleswari conceded in the 90+7th minute after scoring twice in the final 15 minutes, while Dempo scored the latest goal of Matchday 1 in the 90+8th minute.
For Samaleswari, Thursday is about more than correcting the disappointment of their opening defeat. It is an opportunity to give Odisha football a memorable home debut and establish Rourkela as a meaningful destination on the national football calendar.
For Dempo, the objective is straightforward: build on the opening victory and demonstrate that their experience can translate into consistent results away from home. With both sides carrying contrasting emotions from their opening fixtures, the encounter promises an intriguing contest at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium.
