Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated reigning world champions Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae to reach the Singapore Open 2026 men's doubles final.

India's star men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty produced one of their finest performances of the season to defeat reigning world champions Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea and storm into the final of the Singapore Open Super 750 on Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Indians overcame the top Korean pair 21-19, 21-18 in a gripping 52-minute semifinal at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, registering their first victory over Kim and Seo in three meetings. The result sends Satwik and Chirag into their second BWF World Tour final of 2026 and keeps alive hopes of a first title of the season after they finished runners-up at the Thailand Open earlier this year.

Coming into the match, the Indian duo faced a difficult challenge against one of the most formidable pairs on the international circuit. Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae entered the tournament as reigning world champions and had won both previous meetings against Satwik and Chirag. Their defensive abilities and counter-attacking game have made them one of the toughest pairs to break down in men's doubles.

However, the Indians showed exceptional composure throughout the contest and delivered when it mattered most. The victory was particularly significant because it came against a pair that has consistently troubled many of the world's top teams over the past year.

The first game appeared to be slipping away from the Indian pair on more than one occasion. Kim and Seo established control during the early exchanges and built a healthy lead as Satwik and Chirag struggled to find rhythm. The Indians trailed 8-13 before briefly reducing the deficit, only to fall behind again at 13-17.

At that stage, the Korean pair looked well placed to take the opening game. Instead, Satwik and Chirag produced a remarkable turnaround.

The Indians gradually increased the pace of their attack while maintaining patience in the rallies. Their ability to remain composed under pressure proved crucial as they clawed their way back into the contest. Point by point, the momentum shifted.

Eventually, the Indian pair edged ahead and closed out the game 21-19, securing a crucial psychological advantage.

The second game followed a similar pattern. Once again, the Koreans held the advantage and appeared in control midway through the game. Kim and Seo led 14-11 and seemed poised to force a deciding game. However, Satwik and Chirag responded with arguably the most decisive phase of the match.

The Indian pair reeled off six consecutive points to transform a three-point deficit into a 17-14 lead. The momentum swing stunned the Koreans and gave the Indians the cushion they needed heading into the closing stages. From there, Satwik and Chirag remained in control, refusing to allow the world champions a route back into the match.

They eventually sealed the game 21-18 and booked their place in the final.

A key factor behind the victory was the Indians' ability to remain composed when trailing. Speaking after the match, Chirag highlighted the mindset that helped them overturn deficits in both games.

"When we were down, we kept calm and backed ourselves because we knew if we stuck to our plan, they would crack at some point," he said.

The comment reflected the maturity shown by the pair throughout the encounter. Rather than forcing winners or rushing points, they trusted their strategy and gradually wore down their opponents. Chirag also acknowledged the challenge posed by the Korean duo.

"They have the best defense on the circuit right now. We knew we had to stay calm and steady, especially when attacking," he added.

The disciplined approach ultimately proved decisive.

The result marks another significant milestone in what has been an encouraging season for India's most successful men's doubles partnership. Satwik and Chirag claimed a bronze medal at the 2025 World Championships and have continued to be among the leading contenders at major tournaments. After falling short in the Thailand Open final earlier this year, the pair now has another opportunity to lift a title on the BWF World Tour.

They will face either Denmark's Mathias Christiansen and Alexander Boe or China's Gao Jia Xuan and Wei Ya Xin in the championship match.

While Satwik and Chirag celebrated a memorable victory, India's mixed doubles challenge came to an end in the semifinals. Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto fought hard against Japan's Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara but eventually lost 16-21, 21-17, 13-21. The defeat ended an impressive run for the Indian pair, who had reached the last four after benefiting from a quarterfinal retirement.

Despite their exit, Indian badminton will still have representation on finals day thanks to Satwik and Chirag's stunning victory over the reigning world champions.

With confidence high and a title now within reach, the Indian duo stands just one win away from one of the biggest triumphs of their season.
