India's Sumit Nagal began his campaign at the ATP 75 Cordenons Challenger on a winning note, defeating Romania's Cezar Cretu 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of the Internazionali di Tennis del Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy.

Seeded third for the tournament, Nagal produced another composed display against Cretu, whom he had also defeated just a few weeks ago in the semifinals of the ATP Challenger event in Targu Mures. This time, however, the Indian wrapped up the contest in straight sets to secure his place in the Round of 16.

The victory also provides a welcome boost to Nagal's ATP ranking, with the Indian moving up to World No. 236 in the live ATP rankings, a gain of five places.

Nagal looked in control from the opening exchanges and quickly established his authority on the match.

Using his trademark heavy groundstrokes and aggressive baseline play, the Indian consistently pushed Cretu onto the defensive and capitalised on the Romanian's inability to win points behind his second serve. The opening set lasted just over half an hour, with Nagal breaking serve early before maintaining complete control to seal it 6-2.

His consistency from the baseline proved too much for Cretu, who struggled to dictate rallies against the Indian's disciplined shot-making.

The second set proved more competitive as Cretu attempted to raise his level. The Romanian improved his serving percentages and produced longer rallies, forcing Nagal to work harder for his points. Despite the increased resistance, the Indian remained calm under pressure and continued to create opportunities on return.

A crucial break eventually proved enough for Nagal, who held his nerve in the closing stages to wrap up the second set 6-4 and complete a convincing straight-sets victory. It was another mature performance from the 27-year-old, who never appeared to lose control of the contest despite Cretu's improvement in the second set.

The match statistics underlined Nagal's superiority across most departments. He won an impressive 78 percent of points behind his first serve, while also claiming 67 percent of points on his second serve, highlighting the effectiveness of his service games. Perhaps even more significant was his performance on return.

Nagal won 33 receiving points compared to Cretu's 15, consistently putting pressure on the Romanian's serve throughout the match. He also converted three of his eleven break-point opportunities, while not allowing Cretu to convert any of his four break points. Overall, Nagal won 74 total points compared to Cretu's 53 and claimed 12 games against the Romanian's six, reflecting his control over the contest.

The contest carried added significance as it marked a rematch of their semifinal meeting at the ATP Challenger in Targu Mures just a couple of weeks earlier. On that occasion, Nagal had also emerged victorious, although the encounter was far more closely contested. This time, the Indian ensured there would be little drama.

His familiarity with Cretu's game appeared to work in his favour as he dictated play from the outset and rarely allowed the Romanian any sustained momentum. The victory also extends Nagal's recent success against Cretu and reinforces his confidence as he progresses deeper into another Challenger tournament.

With the opening hurdle cleared, Nagal will now face the winner of the first-round match between Juan Bautista Torres of Argentina and Georgii Kravchenko of Ukraine. Both opponents present different challenges. Torres, currently ranked World No. 288, has established himself as a consistent performer on the Challenger circuit, while Kravchenko, ranked No. 398, will be looking to produce an upset if he advances.

Regardless of the opponent, Nagal will enter the Round of 16 carrying confidence after an assured opening-round performance.

The victory has also translated into valuable ATP ranking points. According to the latest live rankings, Nagal has climbed to World No. 236, moving up five places from his previous position.

Every ranking gain is significant at this stage of the season as players battle for direct entries into higher-level ATP Challenger events and Grand Slam qualifying draws. A deep run in Cordenons could further strengthen Nagal's position and move him closer to breaking back into the world's top 200. Among other Indians, Manas Dhamne has also made encouraging progress in the live rankings, climbing nine places to World No. 372, while Dhakshineswar Suresh currently sits at World No. 460.

Nagal has spent much of the season rebuilding momentum on the ATP Challenger circuit following injury setbacks and fluctuating form. His recent performances suggest the Indian is gradually rediscovering the consistency that previously helped him break into the ATP Top 100. Victories like the one over Cretu not only add valuable ranking points but also reinforce confidence ahead of bigger tournaments later in the season.

As the third seed in Cordenons, Nagal will hope to continue his impressive run and challenge for the title.

For now, the Indian can take satisfaction from a professional opening-round performance that combined strong serving, effective returning and disciplined baseline play—qualities that will be essential if he is to make another deep run on the challenger circuit.
