Sumit Nagal Reaches First ATP Challenger Final of 2026 After Gritty Win Over Cezar Cretu in Romania

India's Sumit Nagal reached his first ATP Challenger final of 2026 after defeating Romania's Cezar Cretu in three sets at the ATP Challenger 75 Târgu Mureș. Nagal will now face France's Felix Balshaw in the final.
India's top-ranked singles player Sumit Nagal is one win away from ending his title drought after producing another determined comeback to reach the ATP Challenger 75 Târgu Mureș final in Romania.
The 28-year-old defeated Romanian home favourite Cezar Cretu in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, to book his place in his first ATP Challenger final of 2026 and his first since finishing runner-up at the Perugia Challenger in June 2024. The victory also marked Nagal's fourth consecutive three-set win this week, highlighting his resilience and physical endurance as he continues his climb back up the ATP rankings.
He will now face French qualifier Felix Balshaw in Sunday's championship match, with a seventh ATP Challenger title firmly within reach.
Nagal's journey through the tournament has been defined by grit rather than easy victories, and the semi-final was no exception. Facing Cezar Cretu, who had enjoyed an outstanding week without dropping a set and had eliminated several strong opponents, Nagal knew he would have to overcome both a confident player and a partisan Romanian crowd.
The match began with Cretu taking early control, breaking serve to move 3-1 ahead in the opening set. However, Nagal responded like an experienced campaigner. Instead of allowing the deficit to grow, the Indian completely changed the momentum by winning five consecutive games, turning a two-game deficit into a 6-3 first-set victory.
His aggressive returning and improved first-serve percentage began to trouble the Romanian, allowing Nagal to dictate rallies from the baseline.
The second set proved far more competitive. Cretu regained his rhythm and began attacking Nagal's second serve more consistently, while also reducing his own unforced errors. The Romanian eventually edged the set 6-4, forcing the contest into a deciding third set and ending Nagal's hopes of another straight-sets victory.
For the Indian, it marked the fourth successive match this week that would require a deciding set. Rather than showing signs of fatigue, Nagal once again elevated his level when it mattered most.
The deciding set showcased Nagal at his best. After trading the opening games, the Indian quickly took complete control through powerful groundstrokes and disciplined court coverage. He repeatedly forced Cretu into defensive positions before finishing points with aggressive forehands and precise backhands.
The Romanian struggled to match Nagal's intensity as the Indian raced through the set 6-1, sealing victory after another impressive display of mental strength. It was a fitting conclusion to a match that once again demonstrated Nagal's ability to recover from difficult situations and finish strongly.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Nagal's run has been the manner in which he has reached the final. Every knockout match has required him to battle through deciding sets, repeatedly overcoming adversity against quality opposition. His campaign began with a hard-fought victory over Croatia's Mili Poljičak, before another comeback win against Benjamin Hassan in the Round of 16.
The quarter-final against Duje Ajduković followed a similar script, with Nagal recovering after losing the opening set to secure a place in the semi-finals. Now, after defeating Cretu, Nagal has compiled four consecutive three-set victories, a testament to both his physical fitness and competitive mentality. Winning multiple close matches often provides players with enormous confidence, something that could prove crucial in the final.
First Challenger Final Since 2024
Reaching the championship match marks an important milestone in Nagal's comeback journey. The Indian has experienced a difficult period over the past year, with injuries and inconsistent results contributing to a significant drop in the ATP rankings.
Currently ranked World No. 285, far below his career-high ranking of No. 68, Nagal has been working steadily to rebuild his confidence through Challenger-level events. His run in Romania represents his 11th ATP Challenger final and provides another opportunity to climb the rankings with a strong points haul.
A title would not only improve his ranking but also provide valuable momentum heading into the second half of the season.
Standing between Nagal and the trophy is French qualifier Felix Balshaw, who has enjoyed an impressive tournament of his own. Balshaw has emerged as one of the surprise performers in Târgu Mureș, navigating the qualifying rounds before continuing his winning streak in the main draw. The final promises to be an intriguing contest between two players carrying excellent momentum into championship Sunday.
While Balshaw will aim to complete a dream week as a qualifier, Nagal enters the match with the experience of having played numerous Challenger finals throughout his career.
Regardless of the outcome, Nagal's run in Romania represents one of the most encouraging performances by an Indian singles player this season. His ability to consistently win difficult matches, recover from setbacks and maintain a high level over consecutive days suggests that his game is moving back in the right direction. With four straight comeback victories, renewed confidence and a place in his first ATP Challenger final in two years, Sumit Nagal has already taken a significant step forward in his comeback journey.
Now, just one match remains between India's No. 1 singles player and what would be his seventh ATP Challenger title a victory that could mark the beginning of another rise up the ATP rankings.
