Sunil Chhetri has added another milestone to his career, becoming the most capped player in Indian Super League (ISL) history.

The Bengaluru FC captain made his 195th appearance in the league during their match against Jamshedpur FC on May 9, 2026, moving past the previous record of 194 held by goalkeeper Amrinder Singh.

The number itself reflects more than just longevity. It captures over a decade of consistent participation at the highest level of Indian football, across different tactical systems, managers, and phases of the league’s evolution.

Chhetri’s ISL journey did not begin in the inaugural season. He entered the league in 2015 with Mumbai City FC, making an immediate impact with seven goals in his debut campaign. That phase established his ability to adapt quickly to the format of the competition.

His career in the ISL can broadly be divided into two segments:

  • Mumbai City FC (2015–2016): Short stint but impactful start

  • Bengaluru FC (2017–present): Sustained dominance and leadership

The transition of Bengaluru FC from the I-League into the ISL in 2017 marked the beginning of Chhetri’s most productive years. Since then, he has been central to the club’s structure, both as a captain and as a primary goal-scoring option.

Across seasons, his availability has remained consistent. Even as the league saw high player turnover, Chhetri continued to feature regularly, maintaining fitness levels that allowed him to stay competitive against younger players.

The 195th Appearance: Context of the Milestone

The record came during a crucial away fixture against Jamshedpur FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. Interestingly, Chhetri did not start the game. He was introduced late in the match, marking his 195th appearance in the 85th minute. This reflects a shift in his role within the squad. At 41, Chhetri is no longer deployed as a full-time starter but is used more strategically, often as an impact substitute. This transition has allowed him to extend his career while still contributing effectively.

The match itself ended in a 1-0 win for Bengaluru FC, with Ryan Williams scoring the decisive goal. Chhetri’s presence in the closing stages helped the team manage the game, using his experience to retain possession and control the tempo.

The milestone was achieved in a season that itself has been unusual due to scheduling and structural disruptions in Indian football.

The ISL has historically seen frequent changes in squads, especially due to the rotation of foreign players and managerial shifts. In such an environment, maintaining a long-term presence is rare. Chhetri’s 195 appearances highlight a different trajectory. He has remained relevant across multiple tactical systems and coaching philosophies. His adaptability has been key to sustaining this level of participation.

The all-time appearance leaderboard shows the level of competition among Indian players:

  • Sunil Chhetri – 195

  • Pritam Kotal – 195

  • Amrinder Singh – 194

  • Rahul Bheke – 186

  • Mandar Rao Dessai – 179

While others are close, Chhetri’s achievement is unique given his position as a forward. Defensive players and goalkeepers typically accumulate more appearances due to lower physical strain, making his record stand out.

One of the key reasons behind Chhetri’s longevity is his ability to evolve. Earlier in his career, he operated as a traditional striker, leading the line and engaging physically with defenders.

Over time, his role has changed. He now functions more as a poacher positioning himself inside the box, focusing on movement and finishing rather than constant pressing. This tactical shift has reduced the physical demands on him while allowing him to remain effective in front of goal. During the 2024-25 season, he scored 14 goals, demonstrating that output has not significantly declined.

His ability to adapt has extended his career in a position where most players experience early decline. Alongside appearances, Chhetri remains one of the most productive players in ISL history. He is the league’s all-time top scorer with 77 goals. While some foreign strikers have higher goal-per-game ratios, none have matched his consistency over such a long period.

Key aspects of his scoring profile include Strong finishing inside the box, High conversion rate in key moments & Ability to score against all teams in the league He is the only player to have scored against every ISL team, reflecting both longevity and adaptability.

Chhetri’s contribution goes beyond statistics. During the 2025-26 season, Indian football faced uncertainty due to administrative issues affecting the league structure. In this period, Chhetri emerged as a key voice, representing players and advocating for stability. His leadership extended off the pitch, highlighting his role in shaping the ecosystem of Indian football.

At Bengaluru FC, he has remained the central figure around whom the squad is built. Even when not starting, his presence influences decision-making and game management.

Maintaining performance at 41 requires a high level of discipline. Chhetri has consistently highlighted the importance of training, recovery, and routine in extending his career. Unlike many players who rely on natural ability early in their careers, he has built his longevity on work ethic. This approach has allowed him to remain competitive despite the increasing pace and physicality of modern football.

With 195 appearances, Chhetri is now close to another milestone the 200-match mark. If he continues into the next season, he could become the first player in ISL history to reach that figure. At the same time, younger players like Lallianzuala Chhangte are emerging as long-term contenders for these records. However, the gap Chhetri has created will require sustained consistency over multiple seasons to match.

Sunil Chhetri’s 195th appearance is not just a record it is a marker of consistency, adaptability, and sustained excellence. In a league that has evolved rapidly over the last decade, he has remained a constant. His journey reflects the broader growth of Indian football. From the early seasons of the ISL to its current competitive structure, Chhetri has been at the centre of that transformation.

As he continues to extend his career, the focus will shift from milestones to legacy. But with every appearance, he continues to redefine what longevity looks like in Indian football.
