Syndrela Das Announces Herself with Stunning Win Over Manika Batra as Dempo Goa Challengers Stay Perfect

Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 witnessed one of its biggest upsets on Sunday as 16-year-old Syndrela Das defeated India's leading paddler Manika Batra in straight games to guide two-time champions Dempo Goa Challengers to a thrilling 8-7 victory over Ahmedabad APL Pipers at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa.
The teenage sensation delivered a fearless performance against World No. 52 Manika, helping Goa build an early lead that ultimately proved decisive despite a spirited comeback from Ahmedabad. Earlier in the day, French Olympian Prithika Pavade produced another standout performance to lead PBG Pune Jaguars to their first victory of the campaign, defeating UP Prometheans 9-6 after overcoming two-time UTT Most Valuable Player Yangzi Liu in the decisive women's singles.
Played under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani, Butterfly UTT Season 7 features 42 players from around the world, including 14 Olympians, and continues to establish itself as one of the strongest franchise table tennis leagues globally.
The evening tie between Dempo Goa Challengers and Ahmedabad APL Pipers was expected to feature several closely contested matches. Instead, the contest was shaped by one remarkable performance. Spain's Alvaro Robles gave Goa the ideal start, comfortably defeating Adrien Rassenfosse in straight games to hand the defending champions an early advantage.
The spotlight then shifted to the women's singles, where 16-year-old Syndrela Das faced India's most accomplished female paddler, Manika Batra. Despite the difference in experience and rankings, Syndrela showed remarkable maturity throughout the contest. Every game was fiercely contested, but the teenager displayed exceptional composure in crucial moments, winning 11-10, 11-9 and 11-9 to complete a sensational 3-0 victory.
Her straight-games win stunned the home crowd and immediately became one of the defining moments of the season.
The victory also handed Goa a commanding 6-0 lead after just two matches.
Facing a daunting deficit, Ahmedabad refused to surrender. The experienced pairing of Payas Jain and Sofia Polcanova produced a dominant display in the mixed doubles, defeating Abhinandh P.B. and Bernadette Szocs in straight games to reduce the overall deficit. Payas then kept Ahmedabad's hopes alive with another important performance.
Although Goa's young paddler Abhinandh P.B. had already secured enough points for the Challengers to clinch the tie, Payas fought back to win the final game of their singles encounter, ensuring Ahmedabad remained within touching distance. The final match featured an intriguing contest between international doubles partners Sofia Polcanova and reigning UTT MVP Bernadette Szocs.
Polcanova maintained her impressive form by defeating the Romanian in straight games, completing Ahmedabad's late fightback. However, Goa's dominant start proved enough to secure a narrow 8-7 victory and their second consecutive win of the season. For her memorable victory over Manika Batra, Syndrela Das was named both the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie and the Indian Player of the Tie.
Alvaro Robles received the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award, while Sofia Polcanova was named Foreign Player of the Tie.
Earlier in the afternoon, French Olympian Prithika Pavade continued her impressive introduction to Ultimate Table Tennis. PBG Pune Jaguars secured a valuable 9-6 victory over UP Prometheans, with Pavade producing the decisive performance against Yangzi Liu. UP made the brighter start through Germany's Ricardo Walther, who defeated Omar Assar in three games.
Pune responded immediately as Diya Chitale recovered from a game down to edge Sayali Wani before the Jaguars took control through the mixed doubles. Snehit SFR and Pavade displayed tremendous composure, winning consecutive Golden Points to overcome Ricardo Walther and Swastika Ghosh in a dramatic contest.
Snehit then extended Pune's advantage with another hard-fought victory over Sudhanshu Grover, continuing his unbeaten run in Season 7.
With the tie still hanging in the balance, Prithika Pavade faced arguably her toughest challenge of the season against two-time UTT MVP Yangzi Liu. After losing the opening game, the French Olympian gradually found her rhythm. Her aggressive attacking play and excellent control helped her dominate the final two games as she completed an impressive comeback victory.
Defeating one of the league's most decorated players marked another major statement from Pavade, who has quickly established herself as one of the standout overseas signings of the season. She was named the Foreign Player of the Tie, while Snehit collected both the Indian Player of the Tie and ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie honours.
Omar Assar's spectacular winner during the deciding game of his singles encounter earned him the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award.
