Tanya Hemanth and Aakarshi Kashyap advanced while Kidambi Srikanth retired and several Indians exited on Day 2 of the BWF Canada Open 2026.

India experienced a day of contrasting results at the BWF Canada Open 2026, with Tanya Hemanth and Aakarshi Kashyap emerging as the country's brightest performers by advancing to the next round, while several other Indian shuttlers bowed out after spirited battles in Calgary.

Day 2 featured a packed schedule for the Indian contingent, with established names like Kidambi Srikanth, Sankar Subramanian, Anmol Kharb, and several rising stars taking the court. Although the overall results tilted towards disappointment, the performances of Tanya and Aakarshi ensured India maintained its presence in the latter stages of the tournament.

The standout Indian performance of the day came from Tanya Hemanth, who defeated compatriot Disha Gupta in straight games to book her place in the next round. Tanya secured a 21-16, 21-18 victory in an all-Indian contest that featured several entertaining rallies. While both players displayed good attacking intent, Tanya remained the more composed of the two during the crucial stages of each game.

She built an early lead in the opening game before maintaining her advantage through disciplined shot selection and consistent court coverage. In the second game, Disha mounted a stronger challenge, narrowing the gap during the closing stages, but Tanya held her nerve to complete the match in straight games.

The victory continues Tanya's encouraging progress on the international circuit as she looks to establish herself among India's next generation of women's singles players.

Former national champion Aakarshi Kashyap also produced a confident display to advance after defeating Anna Tatranova in straight games. Aakarshi was in control throughout the contest, claiming a 21-14, 21-12 victory without allowing her opponent to dictate play. She relied on her experience to control the pace of rallies, combining solid defence with timely attacking winners. The Indian rarely looked under pressure and steadily increased her lead in both games before wrapping up the match comfortably.

Her performance will boost confidence heading into the later rounds, where the level of competition is expected to become significantly stronger.

One of the biggest talking points of the day was Kidambi Srikanth's unfortunate retirement against Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia. The former World Championship silver medallist was locked in a closely contested opening game before being forced to retire while trailing 10-11. The reason for the retirement was not immediately confirmed, but the abrupt end denied fans the opportunity to witness what promised to be one of the marquee matches of the opening rounds.

For Srikanth, who has been working to regain consistency on the BWF World Tour, the retirement will come as a setback, especially considering the quality of opposition he was facing.

Young Indian shuttler Rakshitha came close to progressing after taking the opening game against Rachel Chan. Rakshitha started strongly, winning the first game 21-15 through aggressive attacking badminton. However, momentum gradually shifted as Rachel responded strongly to edge the second game 15-14 before taking the deciding game 21-15 to complete the comeback victory.

Despite the defeat, Rakshitha showed encouraging signs against a quality international opponent.

One of the day's longest and most entertaining matches involved Anmol Kharb, who pushed Canadian star Michelle Li before eventually going down in three games. After losing the opening game heavily 6-21, Anmol produced an outstanding response in the second game. Displaying tremendous fighting spirit, she saved multiple game points before edging an exciting marathon game 26-24 to force a decider.

However, the experienced Michelle Li regained control in the third game, using her superior court coverage and consistency to seal a 21-6, 24-26, 21-13 victory. Although eliminated, Anmol's ability to recover after the difficult opening game demonstrated her resilience against one of Canada's most accomplished players.

India's Sankar Subramanian also endured a disappointing defeat after making an excellent start against Korea's Yoo Tae Bin. Sankar captured the opening game 21-19, but was unable to maintain the momentum. The Korean player raised his intensity in the following two games, claiming them 21-15 and 21-15 to eliminate the Indian.

It was another match where an Indian player started brightly but could not sustain the level through the full contest.

Several other Indian shuttlers also exited the tournament on Day 2. Saneeth struggled against Japan's Yudai Okimoto, suffering a straight-games defeat 21-7, 21-11. Devika was outplayed by Tung Ciou Tong, losing 21-14, 21-15, while Shriyanshi went down 21-9, 21-18 against Huang Ching Ping despite showing greater resistance in the second game.

These results brought India's Day 2 campaign to a close with more disappointments than successes.

While India registered only two victories on the day, there were several encouraging performances. Aakarshi Kashyap looked composed and confident throughout her match, reinforcing her credentials as one of India's experienced campaigners. Tanya Hemanth continued her upward trajectory with another solid victory, while players like Anmol Kharb, Rakshitha and Sankar Subramanian all demonstrated flashes of quality despite ending on the losing side.

The narrow defeats also underline the increasingly competitive nature of BWF World Tour events, where momentum can shift quickly and fine margins often determine the outcome.

With most of the Indian contingent now eliminated, attention turns to Tanya Hemanth and Aakarshi Kashyap, who carry India's hopes into the next stage of the Canada Open. Both players will face sterner tests as the tournament progresses, but their confident victories on Day 2 provide reasons for optimism.

As the competition enters its decisive stages, India will hope its remaining representatives can build on their performances and continue the country's challenge for silverware at the BWF Canada Open 2026.
