Vaishnavi Adkar defeated former World No. 85 Jodie Burrage 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the Chennai Open 2026, recovering from 3-5 down in the deciding set to claim her maiden WTA Tour-level main-draw win.

The 21-year-old Indian wildcard fought back from a set down and overturned a 3-5 deficit in the deciding set to secure a memorable 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at the WTA 250 Chennai Open 2026.

Vaishnavi Adkar produced one of the biggest victories of her young career at the WTA Chennai Open 2026, defeating Britain's Jodie Burrage 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a gripping first-round encounter on Tuesday. The Indian wildcard showed remarkable composure and fighting spirit to claim her maiden WTA Tour-level main-draw victory after a contest lasting close to three hours.

The result was particularly significant given the experience of her opponent. Burrage, a former World No. 85, entered the match with a considerable advantage in Tour-level experience. Although ranked below her career-best position, the Briton remained a formidable challenge for Adkar, who was competing on home soil and looking to convert her wildcard opportunity into a breakthrough result.

The 21-year-old, ranked around the 340s in the world, eventually found a way past Burrage in a match that demanded patience, endurance and belief until the final point.

The contest began with Burrage establishing control. The British player took the opening set 6-3, putting Adkar under pressure and forcing the Indian to work hard to find her rhythm. For Adkar, the challenge was not simply about matching Burrage's experience but also about staying competitive in the longer exchanges. With the opening set going against her, the Indian needed to raise her level and find a way to disrupt her opponent's momentum.

She responded impressively in the second set. Adkar became more effective in the rallies and showed greater confidence in her shot selection. The improvement translated into a 6-3 second-set victory, bringing the match level and setting up a deciding set.

The comeback was an important achievement in itself, but the most demanding phase of the contest was still to come.

From 3-5 down, Adkar turns the match around

The deciding set developed into a tense battle, with Burrage moving within touching distance of victory after taking a 5-3 lead. At that stage, the Briton was just two games away from closing out the match. Adkar, however, refused to concede the contest. The Indian raised her intensity at precisely the moment when the pressure was highest, winning four consecutive games to turn a seemingly difficult situation into a remarkable victory.

From 3-5 down, she fought her way back to 5-5 before completing the turnaround at 7-5. The final sequence reflected the resilience that had carried her through the match. Having already recovered from losing the opening set, Adkar showed that she could also handle the pressure of facing defeat in the deciding set.

It was a significant test of temperament for a player still establishing herself on the international circuit.

Speaking after the victory, Adkar expressed her happiness at securing the milestone and acknowledged the challenge posed by Burrage. "I am really happy. I knew it was going to be a tough match and that I had to fight for every point. I knew I wasn't going to get any free points because she is a good player who has been in the top 100. I just tried to give my all on every point, and I think it worked pretty well for me," she said.

Her comments underlined the approach that proved decisive. Rather than allowing the ranking difference or the experience of her opponent to dictate the contest, Adkar focused on competing point by point.

For Indian tennis, the victory is another encouraging moment in the development of its emerging women's singles players. Winning a first-round match at a WTA 250 event against a former top-100 player provides valuable experience, particularly when the victory comes through such a demanding comeback.

Anastasia Zakharova awaits in the second round

Adkar's reward is a place in the Round of 16, where she will face seventh seed Anastasia Zakharova of Russia, currently ranked around World No. 107. The next challenge will be another substantial step up. Zakharova's ranking and seeding make her a formidable opponent, and Adkar will need to reproduce the consistency and competitive intensity she displayed against Burrage.

However, the Indian will take confidence from the manner of her opening-round victory. She has already demonstrated that she can recover from a set down, withstand pressure in the deciding set and close out a match against a player with considerable Tour experience.

The Chennai Open has given Adkar an opportunity to compete on a significant stage in front of Indian tennis fans. She has responded by delivering a milestone victory. At 21, this is an important addition to her breakout season. The scoreline tells the story of a three-set contest, but the defining detail is the four consecutive games she won after trailing 3-5 in the decider.

Vaishnavi Adkar did not simply win her first WTA Tour-level main-draw match. She earned it through a comeback that showcased the fighting spirit and belief required to take the next step in professional tennis.
