Vishal Kaith saved two penalties as Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated defending champions NorthEast United 4-3 in a shootout to reach the Durand Cup 2026 final against East Bengal.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant are through to the final of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup after goalkeeper Vishal Kaith once again delivered in a high-pressure penalty shootout, saving two crucial spot-kicks to secure a 4-3 victory over defending champions NorthEast United FC.

After a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong, Kaith emerged as the decisive figure in the shootout, denying Robin Yadav and Parthib Gogoi to send the Mariners into a blockbuster Kolkata Derby final against arch-rivals East Bengal FC. The final, scheduled for Sunday, August 23, will now bring together two of Indian football’s biggest clubs with the Durand Cup title at stake.

For Mohun Bagan, Thursday’s semifinal victory was a test of patience, defensive discipline and nerve. The wet conditions made fluent football difficult, clear-cut opportunities were limited and neither side could find a breakthrough over 90 minutes. But when the contest reached penalties, Kaith ensured the defending champions' campaign came to an end.

Both teams made two changes to their starting line-ups for the semifinal.

NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali brought in defenders Soraisham Dinesh Singh and Pramveer Singh in place of Asheer Akhtar and Macarton Louis Nickson. Mohun Bagan coach Panagiotis Dilimperis made changes of his own, with Samir Zeljkovic replacing Anirudh Thapa in midfield and Kiyan Nassiri coming into the attack in place of Dejan Dražić.

The opening 20 minutes reflected the difficult conditions in Shillong. Neither team was able to establish sustained control in midfield, with the wet surface disrupting passing moves and making it difficult to build rhythm. Both sides increasingly relied on direct balls over the defensive line in an attempt to create openings.

Mohun Bagan produced the first effort on target midway through the opening half. Liston Colaco stepped up for a free-kick and forced NorthEast United goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh into an excellent save. Soon after, Kiyan Nassiri found space inside the attacking area but chose to shoot from a tight angle instead of looking for teammates. His effort hit the side netting.

The Mariners had shown attacking intent, but NorthEast United remained dangerous.

As the first half progressed, set-pieces became an increasingly important attacking route. Both teams earned three corners, with neither able to make a decisive breakthrough. NorthEast United came close through Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who brought down a high ball from a set-piece before sending his volley narrowly wide of the post.

Just before half-time, Sahal Abdul Samad almost produced a moment of individual brilliance. After winning possession in the centre of the pitch, Sahal noticed Gurmeet Singh off his line and attempted an audacious long-range effort. The NorthEast goalkeeper was forced to backpedal but recovered in time to reach the ball and deny an attempt that appeared to be heading towards goal.

The first half ended 0-0.

It had been a contest of effort and organisation rather than attacking fluency. The conditions had limited both teams, and neither side had created enough clear-cut opportunities to take control of the semifinal.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Both teams continued to struggle for sustained attacking control, although NorthEast United began to create the more promising opportunities as the match entered its final half-hour. Around the hour mark, Abdul Rabeeh delivered a dangerous low cross from the right flank, but Ajaraie narrowly failed to connect in front of goal.

The Moroccan attacker was involved again soon afterwards. Collecting a long ball on the left, Ajaraie delivered a cross into the box for Etyan Gonzalez. The Spanish striker rose to meet it but could not direct his header towards the target.

NorthEast continued to push for a breakthrough. A well-worked move beginning on the left saw the ball switched across to the right before a cross found its way into the path of Macarton Nickson. The midfielder had an opportunity from inside the box but sent his effort into the side netting.

It was arguably the closest either team came to breaking the deadlock. Mohun Bagan, however, remained disciplined. Their defensive structure held firm and ensured that NorthEast United could not convert their territorial advantage into a goal.

As the final whistle approached, the reality became clear: the semifinal would be decided by penalties.

Vishal Kaith Delivers Under Pressure

The shootout began with both teams displaying remarkable composure. Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United converted their first three penalties, leaving the contest perfectly balanced heading into the fourth round. Then Vishal Kaith stepped forward. NorthEast United's Robin Yadav took the fourth penalty, but Kaith read the effort brilliantly and made a crucial save.

The advantage shifted immediately towards Mohun Bagan. Jamie Maclaren then calmly converted his penalty, putting the Mariners ahead and placing NorthEast United under enormous pressure. The defending champions needed to score.

Parthib Gogoi stepped up. Kaith was ready again. The Mohun Bagan goalkeeper produced his second outstanding save of the shootout, sealing a 4-3 victory and sparking celebrations among the Mariners. For Kaith, it was another reminder of his value in decisive moments. Penalty shootouts can often turn on small margins, but saving two spot kicks in a semifinal against the defending champions is the kind of performance that defines a goalkeeper's tournament.

Mohun Bagan's reward is one of the biggest fixtures Indian football can produce. East Bengal FC await in the final. The Kolkata Derby will decide the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup champion, adding another chapter to one of Asia’s most historic football rivalries.

For Mohun Bagan, the semifinal victory provides momentum heading into Sunday’s final. They survived a difficult contest, defended strongly against a determined NorthEast United side and showed exceptional composure when the match reached penalties. For NorthEast United, the defeat brings an end to their title defence. They created several of the better chances in regulation time but could not find the finish required to avoid a shootout.

Mohun Bagan did.

The Mariners now stand one win away from lifting the Durand Cup. And as they prepare to face East Bengal in the final, they will know they have already overcome one of the toughest tests of the tournament. In Shillong, the match belonged to tension, wet conditions and defensive discipline for 90 minutes.

But when the penalties arrived, it belonged to Vishal Kaith.

Two saves. One semifinal victory. And now, a Kolkata Derby final awaits.
