India's men's contingent signed off from the Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing Championships 2026 with an impressive medal haul, led by Vishvanath Suresh and Ganga, who clinched gold medals in their respective weight categories during the U-23 finals in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The Indian team finished the men's campaign with two gold and one silver medal in the U-23 category, while the country's U-19 boxers added two silver medals, capping off another encouraging performance at the continental championships.

Held from July 5 to 16 in the Indonesian capital, the tournament once again showcased the strength of India's age-group boxing programme, with several young pugilists producing standout performances against Asia's best.

India's first gold medal of the day came through Vishvanath Suresh, who emerged victorious in the 50kg final after a fiercely contested bout against Japan's Daichi Iwai. Both boxers displayed excellent technical skills and defensive discipline throughout the contest, making it one of the closest finals of the day. After three competitive rounds, Vishvanath edged the Japanese boxer by a 3-2 split decision, reflecting just how evenly matched the contest had been.

The victory marked another significant achievement for one of India's most promising young boxers, who has consistently impressed on the international circuit over the past few seasons. Winning continental gold will provide a major confidence boost as he prepares to transition towards senior international competition.

India doubled its tally of gold medals thanks to another gritty performance from Ganga in the 55kg category. Facing Kazakhstan's Bexulatn Boranbek, Ganga produced a composed display to secure another 3-2 split-decision victory. The bout remained evenly balanced throughout, with both fighters landing quality combinations and defending effectively.

However, Ganga's cleaner scoring punches and strong finish proved decisive, allowing the Indian to earn the judges' verdict and climb the top step of the podium. The victory underlined India's ability to perform under pressure, with both gold medals coming in tightly contested finals that could easily have gone either way.

India narrowly missed completing a clean sweep of the U-23 men's finals. Competing in the 65kg final, Vanshaj battled bravely against Uzbekistan's Ilkhomjon Ergashev, one of the strongest boxers in the competition. Despite a determined effort, the Indian found it difficult to break through his opponent's disciplined defence and eventually settled for the silver medal following a 4-1 decision.

Although disappointed to miss out on gold, Vanshaj's run to the final represents another encouraging result for Indian boxing, demonstrating the country's growing depth across multiple weight categories.

India's U-19 men's team also reached two finals but had to settle for silver medals after facing strong Uzbek opposition. In the 55kg category, Aditya took on Uzbekistan's Elyor Rustamov.

Rustamov controlled the contest with sharp counter-attacking and effective ring movement, earning a 5-0 unanimous decision. Meanwhile, Shubham Rajput competed in the 90kg final against Asadbek Sultanboev of Uzbekistan.

Despite showing resilience throughout the bout, Shubham was unable to overturn the Uzbek's advantage and also lost by a 5-0 unanimous verdict. While the defeats were disappointing, reaching the finals of a continental championship remains a significant achievement for both young boxers.

India's overall performance in the men's competition reflected the continued progress of the country's boxing development programme. Winning two gold medals in the U-23 category against strong opposition from Japan and Kazakhstan highlights the quality emerging from India's high-performance system. The U-19 silver medallists also gained invaluable experience competing in continental finals, experience that will prove crucial as they continue their progression through the international ranks.

Across both age groups, Indian boxers demonstrated technical improvement, composure and the ability to compete consistently against some of Asia's strongest boxing nations. The Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing Championships have become an important benchmark for identifying future senior international stars. India's performances in Jakarta once again reinforced the country's growing reputation as one of Asia's leading boxing nations.

Several medal winners from previous editions have gone on to achieve success at the senior level, and this year's crop appears equally promising. The victories by Vishvanath Suresh and Ganga, in particular, suggest India possesses a strong pipeline of talent capable of competing for medals at future Asian Championships, World Championships and eventually the Olympic Games.

As the championships conclude, India's coaching staff will leave Jakarta with plenty of positives. The U-23 squad demonstrated the ability to win high-pressure finals, while the U-19 boxers gained invaluable exposure against elite continental opponents. The combination of gold, silver and bronze medals across both the men's and women's competitions reflects the strength of India's grassroots and age-group boxing structure.

With several medal winners expected to graduate into senior competition over the next few years, the future of Indian boxing looks increasingly bright. The performances in Jakarta not only added to India's growing medal tally at the continental level but also reaffirmed the country's status as one of Asia's emerging boxing powerhouses, with a new generation of talented boxers ready to carry forward India's success on the international stage.
