Indian swimming witnessed a remarkable day at the Senior National Aquatic Championships 2026 in Ahmedabad as multiple national records tumbled in spectacular fashion.

Vritti Agarwal produced one of the standout performances of the meet by rewriting the women’s 800m freestyle national record, while Nina Venkatesh continued her dominance in the butterfly events and Karnataka’s women’s 4x100m medley relay team delivered a historic swim.

Representing Team IIS, Vritti Agarwal etched her name into Indian swimming history by clocking 9:05.47 in the women’s 800m freestyle final. In doing so, she eclipsed the long-standing national record of 9:06.31 set by Richa Mishra in 2011. The performance marked the end of a record that had stood untouched for 15 years and highlighted Vritti’s steady rise as one of India’s leading distance swimmers. Swimming with consistency throughout the race, she maintained her pace over the grueling 800-metre distance before touching the wall in record-breaking fashion.

Her swim earned widespread praise and added another milestone to what has already been an impressive season. Breaking a national record that had survived for more than a decade underlines both her endurance and technical progression on the national stage.

The women’s 4x100m medley relay also produced fireworks, with Team Karnataka rewriting the national record in emphatic style. The quartet of Nina Venkatesh, S Lakshya, Tanishi Gupta and Dhinidhi Desinghu combined brilliantly to finish in 4:18.72, comfortably surpassing the previous national record of 4:23.65 established in 2023. Their effort lowered the benchmark by nearly five seconds, a significant margin in elite swimming.

The race also showcased the improving depth in Indian women’s swimming. Team Odisha finished in 4:22.31, becoming the second team in the race to better the previous national record, highlighting the growing competitiveness across state contingents.

Nina Venkatesh Continues to Raise the Bar

Nina Venkatesh enjoyed another memorable outing by rewriting her own women’s 50m butterfly national record. Having previously set the benchmark at 27.70 seconds in 2023, Nina improved it first to 27.67 before lowering it even further to 27.57 seconds at the championships. The latest mark reflects her continued progression and establishes a new standard in Indian sprint butterfly swimming.

The event itself was fiercely contested, with Tanishi Gupta also producing an exceptional performance by clocking 27.69 seconds, narrowly missing the national record but demonstrating the increasing quality of competition in the discipline.

Nina’s consistency at the highest domestic level reinforces her position as one of India’s premier swimmers and provides further encouragement ahead of upcoming international competitions.

The multiple national records recorded in Ahmedabad underline the positive trajectory of Indian aquatics. Distance swimming, sprint butterfly events and relay competitions all witnessed benchmark performances, reflecting improvements in athlete preparation, coaching standards and competitive depth. Vritti Agarwal’s 800m freestyle record stands out not only because of the time achieved but also because it erased a mark that had remained intact for 15 years.

Similarly, Karnataka’s relay performance demonstrated the strength of team-based events, while Nina Venkatesh’s continued ability to push her own limits showcased sustained excellence. For Indian swimming, such performances are significant indicators of progress as athletes prepare for higher levels of international competition. The emergence of multiple record-breaking swims in a single championship also signals healthy competition among the country’s leading swimmers.

As the Senior National Aquatic Championships continue, the performances of Vritti Agarwal, Nina Venkatesh and the Karnataka relay quartet will undoubtedly be remembered as defining moments of the meet. Their achievements not only rewrote the record books but also provided another boost to the momentum of Indian swimming on the national stage.
