India's young swimmers produced one of their finest performances at the Asian Age Group Championships, combining medal-winning displays with a series of national records to underline the country's growing strength in age-group swimming.

The Indian contingent finished the day with an impressive haul of two gold medals and five bronze medals while rewriting the national record books in multiple events. Standout performances came from Dhinidhi Desinghu, Tanishi Gupta, Abdul Hafeez Mohammed Rasheed and the girls' relay teams, who delivered remarkable performances against some of Asia's strongest young swimmers.

The performances not only added to India's medal tally but also highlighted the rapid progress being made by the country's next generation of aquatic talent.

One of the biggest highlights of the championships came in the girls' 15-16 years' 200m freestyle, where Dhinidhi Desinghu claimed the gold medal in spectacular fashion. The young Indian swimmer touched the wall in 2:01.81, improving her own national record by more than a second. Her previous record of 2:02.84 had already established her as one of India's brightest swimming prospects, but her latest performance demonstrated another significant step forward.

Winning gold while breaking the national record against elite Asian competition further cemented her reputation as one of the country's most promising swimmers.

Dhinidhi's success did not end there. She later played a key role in India's bronze medal-winning women's 4x100m Medley Relay team alongside Tanishi Gupta, Jiya Yadav and Saanvi Deshwal, contributing to another national record performance.

Abdul Hafeez Clinches Gold in Butterfly

India's second gold medal of the day came through Abdul Hafeez Mohammed Rasheed in the boys' 13-14 years 200m Butterfly. Abdul produced an excellent race to finish in 2:07.54, securing the top spot on the podium and adding another gold medal to India's tally. His victory showcased India's growing depth in the butterfly events, where several young swimmers have emerged as strong medal contenders in recent years.

The girls' 15-16 years 4x100m medley relay team produced one of the most memorable performances of the championships. The quartet of Dhinidhi Desinghu, Tanishi Gupta, Saanvi Deshwal and Jiya Yadav combined brilliantly to clock 4:16.85, winning the bronze medal while simultaneously creating a new national record.

The previous record of 4:18.72, set at the National Championships just last month, was erased by almost two seconds. The achievement reflected not just individual excellence but also the growing depth of India's women's relay programme.

India's relay success continued in the 15-16 mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, where the team secured another bronze medal. The Indian quartet clocked 3:40.54, establishing yet another national record while finishing on the podium. Relay events have traditionally been an area where India has looked to improve on the continental stage, and two national records in a single championship represent a significant step forward.

Tanishi Gupta enjoyed an outstanding championship, producing one of the fastest butterfly performances ever recorded by an Indian swimmer. Competing in the girls' 15-16 years 50m butterfly, Tanishi won the bronze medal while clocking 27.45, creating a new national record. The swim bettered the previous national mark of 27.67, held by Nina Venkatesh, and also improved upon Tanishi's earlier timing during the competition.

In addition to her individual success, she was instrumental in India's record-breaking medley relay performance, making it a memorable championship for the young swimmer.

India's medal tally continued to grow across multiple events. In the boys' 17-18 years 200m Butterfly, Dharshan Shashikumar claimed the bronze medal after finishing in 2:01.94, adding another podium finish for the Indian team. Sharan Sridhara secured bronze in the boys' 15-16 years 200m Freestyle with a time of 1:55.05, while Kanish Chakraborty added another bronze in the boys' 17-18 years 100m Backstroke, clocking 57.10.

These performances highlighted the balanced nature of India's campaign, with medals coming across freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and relay events.

Although it did not result in a medal, Saanvi Deshwal also entered the record books during the championships. Competing in the women's 200m Breaststroke, she clocked 2:35.93, breaking the previous national record of 2:37.35 that had stood since 2023. Her performance further demonstrated the progress being made by India's women's swimming programme across multiple disciplines.

The performances at the Asian Age Group Championships underline the encouraging progress Indian swimming has made in recent years. Winning two gold medals, five bronze medals, and rewriting multiple national records against Asia's strongest age-group swimmers is a testament to the growing quality of India's young talent pool.

Perhaps more importantly, several of the country's top performers are still in their early teenage years, giving them ample opportunity to continue their development before transitioning to senior international competition. With swimmers like Dhinidhi Desinghu, Tanishi Gupta, Abdul Hafeez Mohammed Rasheed, Saanvi Deshwal and several others consistently lowering national benchmarks, India's future in competitive swimming looks increasingly promising.

The Asian Age Group Championships have once again shown that India's next generation is not just winning medals but also setting new standards that could shape the country's success at future Asian Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic cycles.
