Asian Games 2026: Three Indian Swimmers Qualify for Finals as Rishabh Das, Utkarsh Patil and Sajan Prakash Advance

India’s swimming contingent enjoyed a productive morning at the Asian Games 2026, with three swimmers qualifying for their respective finals at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

Rishabh Das and Utkarsh Patil advanced in the men’s 200m backstroke, while veteran Indian swimmer Sajan Prakash booked his place in the men’s 200m butterfly final.

Das produced the fastest performance among the Indian trio in the backstroke heats, clocking 2:00.53 to finish fourth overall. Utkarsh also progressed with 2:02.13, while Prakash stopped the clock at 2:00.94 in the 200m butterfly to finish sixth overall.

The three swimmers will return to the pool later in the day, giving India three opportunities to compete for a place on the podium.

Rishabh Das produced a strong performance in the men's 200m backstroke heats, recording 2:00.53 to finish fourth overall. The performance secured his place in the final, where he will return to the pool at 1:55 PM IST. Das enters the event as India's national record holder in the discipline, adding significance to his qualification.

The Indian swimmer maintained his position among the leading qualifiers throughout the heats and finished comfortably inside the group advancing to the medal race. His performance gives India a strong representative in the final and another opportunity to challenge the leading swimmers in the event.

Joining Das in the final will be Utkarsh Patil, who clocked 2:02.13 in the heats. Patil finished eighth overall according to the initial results, securing the final qualification position among the advancing swimmers. His qualification means India will have two representatives in the men's 200m backstroke final, increasing the country's presence in the medal race.

The final will begin at 1:55 PM IST, with Das and Patil both set to return to action. For Patil, advancing to the final represents an opportunity to improve further against the stronger field and compete for a top finish in the Asian Games.

Sajan Prakash Advances in 200m Butterfly

Veteran swimmer Sajan Prakash also booked his place in a final, producing a 2:00.94 effort in the men's 200m butterfly heats. Prakash finished sixth overall, comfortably securing his place in the medal race. The Indian swimmer's personal and national benchmark in the event stands at 1:56.38, recorded in 2021. His heat performance of 2:00.94 therefore left room for improvement in the final. Prakash will return to the pool at 2:51 PM IST.

His experience will be valuable as he takes on the finalists in what promises to be a competitive medal race.

The qualification of three swimmers gives India a notable presence in the evening swimming programme. Das and Patil will line up together in the men's 200m backstroke final, while Prakash will compete separately in the 200m butterfly final. The backstroke final at 1:55 PM IST will be the first of the three medal races involving Indian swimmers, followed by Prakash's 200m butterfly final at 2:51 PM IST.

For Das, the focus will be on converting his fourth-place qualification into a podium challenge. Patil, meanwhile, will look to build on his qualification performance and improve his position in the final. Prakash's sixth-place qualification puts him among the finalists and gives him another opportunity to produce a faster time when the medals are decided.

While three swimmers advanced, India’s other competitors in the morning session were unable to progress. In the men’s 50m breaststroke, Danush Suresh clocked 28.40 seconds and finished 21st overall. He did not qualify for the final. The men’s 400m freestyle also saw two Indian swimmers in action.

Aneesh Gowda recorded 3:58.08, finishing 17th overall, while Dhakshan Shashikumar clocked 3:58.73 to finish 18th. Neither swimmer advanced to the final.

Despite those exits, the morning session produced a positive overall result for India's swimming contingent, with three athletes progressing from the heats.

Focus Turns to the Finals

India will now turn its attention to the three medal races.

The men's 200m backstroke final at 1:55 PM IST will feature both Rishabh Das and Utkarsh Patil, giving India two swimmers in the same event. Less than an hour later, Sajan Prakash will contest the men's 200m butterfly final at 2:51 PM IST. The three finalists will now look to improve on their heat performances when they return to the pool.

Das's 2:00.53, Patil's 2:02.13 and Prakash's 2:00.94 were enough to secure qualification. The challenge now is significantly greater: turning semifinal qualification into strong final performances when the medals are decided.

For Indian swimming, however, having three finalists from the morning session provides a strong platform as the Asian Games competition continues.
