The Canadian striker of Punjabi origin has openly expressed his desire to represent India internationally, and his case has reignited the larger debate surrounding Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) footballers and India’s strict citizenship regulations. More importantly, it has raised a footballing question could Shaan Hundal actually improve the Indian national team?
Shaan Singh Hundal was born on July 14, 1999, in Brampton, Ontario, to Punjabi Indian parents. Raised in a bilingual Punjabi-English household, Hundal initially played both basketball and football before fully committing to football during childhood.
His football journey began in the Ontario youth system before he joined the prestigious Toronto FC Academy in 2014, one of the strongest development environments in North American football. There, he quickly emerged as one of Canada’s promising attacking talents. Hundal progressed through Toronto FC III and Toronto FC II, eventually making his professional debut in the United Soccer League (USL) in 2016. During his early years, he was ranked among the top young prospects in the league and even featured in the USL’s “20 Under 20” list in consecutive seasons.
Over the years, he has played across multiple North American clubs, including Toronto FC II, Ottawa Fury, Valour FC, Fort Lauderdale CF (Inter Miami’s reserve side), Inter Miami CF II, Vancouver FC, York United / Inter Toronto & Brooklyn FC
One of the biggest highlights of his club career came in 2025 when he scored four goals in a single Canadian Premier League match for York United, becoming only the second player in league history to achieve the feat.

Can Shaan Hundal Play For India?
Technically, yes. Practically, it is extremely difficult under current Indian law.
India does not allow dual citizenship, meaning Shaan Hundal would have to renounce his Canadian passport entirely before becoming eligible to represent India internationally. In addition, Indian citizenship laws require foreign-born applicants to reside continuously in India for at least one year before obtaining citizenship eligibility. What makes Hundal’s case unique is that he has publicly stated he is willing to make that sacrifice.
According to reports, Hundal even explored the possibility of moving to the Indian Super League in 2025, with Mohammedan SC reportedly interested in signing him as part of a long-term plan to help him secure Indian citizenship. However, the move collapsed due to foreign player quota complications and registration issues. Because India still treats OCI and PIO footballers as foreign players domestically, clubs are often reluctant to use expensive overseas slots on developmental nationality projects.
As things stand, unless India changes its regulations or creates a sports-specific fast-track citizenship process, Hundal remains ineligible for the Blue Tigers despite his willingness to represent the country.
This is where the conversation becomes genuinely interesting. India have struggled badly in recent years when it comes to attacking output, pressing intensity and physicality in the final third. The national team often lacks forwards who can sustain pressure, attack space aggressively and operate effectively in high-tempo systems.
Hundal potentially addresses several of those issues. Firstly, he brings North American professional football experience across multiple competitive environments. While he has not played in Europe’s top leagues, he has spent years operating in physically demanding systems where pressing, transitions and intensity are non-negotiable.
Secondly, his movement inside the box is significantly more modern compared to many Indian strikers currently in the national pool. He constantly looks to exploit gaps between centre-backs rather than simply waiting for service. Thirdly, his pressing ability could fit perfectly into the kind of aggressive transition football many Indian coaches want to implement against stronger Asian opposition.
India also lack depth at centre-forward beyond a few established names. A player like Hundal could provide tactical flexibility and competition.
Shaan Hundal’s situation also highlights a larger issue facing Indian football. Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and several Gulf nations have aggressively integrated diaspora players into their national setups through faster citizenship pathways and sports-based naturalisation programs.
India, meanwhile, continues to operate under rigid structures that make it extremely difficult for players of Indian origin abroad to contribute internationally.
For many fans, Hundal represents untapped potential not necessarily a superstar solution, but a professional footballer with international developmental exposure who genuinely wants to wear the Indian jersey.
Whether that ever becomes reality now depends less on football and more on policy.
