2026 Women's T20 World Cup: India vs Bangladesh

India is tasked with winning both their matches for a place in the semis. Against Bangladesh, what is the conundrum for India in team composition?
In women's T20 Internationals, India has won all three fixtures against Bangladesh at the World Cups. The women in blue lead 20-3 in head-to-head record, which speaks volumes about the lop-sided nature of the contest.
But the task at hand for India goes beyond this match. A loss to South Africa in the previous match came with a hefty price, despite wins against Pakistan and the Netherlands. More than Bangladesh, Harmanpreet Kaur's side now also has to register a win against the mighty Australian side. Australia is yet to lose a match in this tournament, a campaign that began with a 65-run win over the Proteas.
Following India's World Cup win last year, Bangladesh's captain Nigar Sultana had some rough words for Harmanpreet Kaur in November 2025, addressing the Indian's aggressive behavior of smashing the stumps as context to defend against accusations that Sultana was mistreating junior players. It will be the first time the two sides face each other since this off-the-field spat.
This report describes the current form and conundrums of India's current squad, along with a brief note on what to expect from the unpredictable Bangladeshi team.
Bangladesh - Below par on all fronts
Bangladesh has played all three matches of their World Cup campaign thus far in three different venues. They began with a win over the Dutch side, chasing down a target of 140 and extending their lead over the orange side in the head-to-head record 4-1. However, they had a match to forget against the Aussies, where the Kangaroos restricted them to a mere 77 in 20 overs. Australia won the match by nine wickets, with more than half of the innings to spare.
One of Bangladesh's women's side's best wins came against Pakistan. After posting a modest 123/6, Bangladesh were losing all hopes as the Pakistani team cruised to 41/0. However, Sanjida and Nahida Akter spun a web against the Pakistani side, picking up three wickets each, to ensure a 23-run win.
Opener Juairiya Ferdous' tally of 65 runs in three matches is the highest for any Bangladeshi batter in this tournament, which explains the side's form with the bat. The left-arm orthodox spin bowling duo of Sanjida and Nahida Akter has led the charge for Bangladesh's bowling unit. Medium pace bowler Marufa Akter adds to some variation.
India - Harman, Jemimah, and Yastika likely to shift gears?
The 2026 Women's T20 World Cup has belonged to spinners. Seven of the top ten wicket takers of the tournament are spinners. India got a huge setback with the injury of Shreyanka Patil before the match against South Africa. Prema Rawat, who was picked as a replacement, was hammered for 21 runs in 2 overs, further adding to India's woes.
Radha Yadav, who is usually associated with a safe pair of hands, dropped two crucial catches against South Africa. A left-arm orthodox spinner herself, it will be interesting to see if she will be picked in the eleven against Bangladesh. It will also be interesting to see if Renuka Singh Thakur will play the match against Bangladesh on a Manchester pitch, which doesn't disappoint the pacers. Even though she has not been at her finest, an added pace option might be something that Harmanpreet would consider before deciding her best bowling combinations against Australia.
India's batting has looked relatively decent, with Smriti Mandhana being among the top three run-scorers, and Richa Ghosh and Shafali Verma taking the charge to accelerate the rate. Of concern is the form of Jemimah Rodrigues, who has hit only 32 runs in 3 matches at a rate of a run a ball. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has runs in her bag, but hasn't been able to accelerate the rate of scoring in the middle order when needed.
Much was expected from Yastika Bhatia, who had a stellar series against England in England right before the World Cup. However, Yastika hasn't been able to replicate her form in the ongoing event, striking at a rate of less than 100 for a No.3 or No.4 batter. Against Bangladesh, she would expect to find her form again, ahead of the deciding fixture against Australia at Lord's.
The spin trio of Deepti Sharma, Shree Charani, and Shafali Verma has amassed the most wickets for India in this tournament. The pace department has been disappointing, with Kranti Gaud, Arundhati Reddy, and Nandni Sharma managing only four wickets between them in three matches.
Qualification Scenario for India
A likely win over Bangladesh will be followed by India keenly following the next match between South Africa and the Netherlands. The Netherlands' maiden T20 World Cup campaign has been one to forget, as they have lost all their matches. But if the women in orange can pull off an upset, it will massively boost India's chances, as they have a better run-rate than the Proteas. Should the Proteas win, India will then need to beat the Aussies to stay alive in the tournament.
Probable XI
