A preview of the form, squads, and conditions ahead of the all-important clash between India and South Africa at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The T20 World Cup shifts its focus back to Old Trafford, the venue where South Africa were outplayed by the mighty Australian side in the third match of the tournament. India look to continue their momentum, eyeing a third consecutive win in the tournament.

The biggest blow for the women in blue was the excruciating ankle injury of Shreyanka Patil, who has been ruled out of the tournament. While Prema Rawat has been named as her replacement, Radha Yadav is likely to be a permanent member of the playing eleven moving ahead in this event.

Head-to-Head

Overall, India edges the rivalry marginally with a lead of 11-10. However, six of the last ten Women's T20 Internationals between the two sides has swayed in the direction of South Africa. This includes a thumping 4-1 home series win against Harmanpreet's side two months back.

Form in the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup

South Africa began their world cup with disheartening 65-run loss against Australia. In the following match, while they did manage to defeat Pakistan, the Proteas lost 8 wickets chasing 127.

South Africa would expect opener Sune Luus to regain form. Having managed only six runs in two matches, Luus was amongst the highest run-scorer in the series against India, wherein she scored at an average of a little over 49, with a strike rate of 139. However, English conditions seem to have challenged her, as she could manage only 19 runs even during the two warm-up games against New Zealand and Ireland.

Skipper Laura Woolvardt and experienced campaigner Marizanne Kapp will pose the toughest challenge to India. Woolvardt had mind-boggling numbers of 330 runs in the five-match T20 International series against India. She was the top-scorer with an average of 82.50 and a strike rate of 168.37. Such exceptional was her performance that she amassed 133 runs more than the next best batter of the series, Sunne Luus.

South Africa present themselves with plenty of bowling options. Kapp will be joined by Shabnim Ismail, Nadine de Klerk, and Ayabonga Khaka in the pace department. Nonkululeko Mlaba, Chloe Tryon, and Sune Luus are the spin options for the Proteas.

Kapp's wicket-taking abilities in the initial overs, Mlaba's under five economy in the tournament, and Khaka's partnership-breaking abilities in the consolidation stage of the innings make them a strong bowling unit.

South Africa will face the conundrum of picking between Tumi Sekukhune and Shabnim Ismail, given the former's impressive run in the series against India.

Annerie Dercksen and Chloe Tryon are the players whom India needs to be wary of, given the duo's abilities to change the course of the innings with their aggressive hitting.

Smriti Mandhana has been in imperial form so far, topping the leaderboard in the most runs department. The match against Netherlands helped her partner Shafali Verma get back to scoring terms. Jemimah Rodrigues is yet to make an impact in this World Cup.

Yastika Bhatia, who was India's best batter in the series against England fell cheaply in the match against Netherlands. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has been among India's highest run-scorers in T20 Internationals this year. She would be carrying the pressure of building partnerships with Rodrigues and Bhatia.

Richa Ghosh has been India's premier finisher for quite some time now. An aggressive lower-order finisher, her strike rate of 215 in this tournament would be something that the Proteas would want to strategize against.

Of concern would be the form of India's pace duo, Kranti Gaud and Arundhati Reddy. Both players are yet to take a wicket in this tournament. Given that Renuka Singh Thakur had struggled in the series against South Africa, Gaud and Reddy would still be in consideration for the eleven. For India, it will be interesting to see whether Nandni Sharma replaces Gaud or Reddy.

Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma have spun the bowl convincingly thus far, picking seven and six wickets in two matches respectively. They will now be joined by Radha Yadav, whose all-round abilities might also add to India's batting depth. A left-arm orthodox spinner who has been India's specialist fielder, the 26-year-old had also picked a three-wicket haul in the warm-up game against West Indies.

Interestingly, of all bowlers, Radha has been the most successful against Woolvardt in T20Is. In 24 balls that she has bowled to the Proteas skipper, 50% of them have been dot balls, thrice has she gotten her wicket, and conceded only 25 runs.

Kapp and Woolvardt's Delhi Capitals teammate Nandni Sharma will be one to watch out for. In the away series against England right before the World Cup, she was the joint second-highest wicket-taker.

Conditions

While recent history between the two sides favours South Africa, the momentum seems to be with India. The mercury will continue to hover around 15°C at Manchester. Both the matches played in this venue were won by the team batting first.

Probable XI

India: Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Yastika Bhatia, Harmanpreet Kaur, Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, Nandni Sharma/Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Gaud, Shree Charani
