Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 delivered another exciting day of action on Sunday as HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades kept their playoff hopes alive with a convincing 10-5 victory over UP Prometheans, while Dempo Goa Challengers survived a stern challenge from PBG Pune Jaguars to maintain their unbeaten record with a narrow 8-7 triumph.

Both ties showcased the growing competitiveness of the league, with India's young stars once again playing pivotal roles alongside some of the world's top paddlers. While Kolkata relied on the impressive partnership of Ankur Bhattacharjee and Ayhika Mukherjee to secure a crucial victory, Goa's experienced foreign contingent and teenage sensation Syndrela Das combined to preserve their perfect record.

With the league stage approaching its final stretch, every point is becoming increasingly valuable in the race for the semi-finals.

HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades entered the contest knowing that victory was essential to remain in contention for a playoff berth, and they wasted little time asserting their dominance. Ankur Bhattacharjee provided the perfect start by defeating Manav Thakkar in straight games. Although the opening two games were decided by Golden Points, Ankur held his nerve in both before cruising through the third game 11-3 to hand Kolkata an early advantage.

Chinese paddler Zeng Jian then extended Kolkata's lead with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Swastika Ghosh. After taking the opening game comfortably, Zeng briefly lost momentum before regrouping to clinch the decider and move her team closer to victory.

The decisive blow came in the mixed doubles.

Ankur and Ayhika Mukherjee continued their remarkable unbeaten partnership, defeating Ricardo Walther and Swastika Ghosh in three games. Their excellent understanding and tactical awareness once again proved to be one of Kolkata's biggest strengths this season.

The victory maintained their flawless mixed doubles record and effectively put the tie beyond UP's reach.

UP Prometheans showed signs of resistance through Germany's Ricardo Walther, who produced one of the standout individual performances of the evening. Walther dominated Romania's Eduard Ionescu in straight games, winning 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 to keep UP mathematically alive in the contest.

However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished by Ayhika Mukherjee. Facing Sayali Wani in the final match, Ayhika delivered a composed straight-games victory, winning 11-8, 11-10, 11-7 to secure Kolkata's comprehensive 10-5 triumph.

For his outstanding contributions in both singles and doubles, Ankur Bhattacharjee was named both the ChatGPT Match IQ Player and Indian Player of the Tie. Ricardo Walther received the Foreign Player of the Tie award, while Ayhika's brilliant winner earned her the Bisleri Shot of the Tie honour.

Earlier in the day, league leaders Dempo Goa Challengers were pushed to the limit by PBG Pune Jaguars before emerging with a thrilling 8-7 victory. The contest began with an upset as Egyptian star Omar Assar came from behind to hand Abhinandh PB his first singles defeat of the season. After narrowly losing the opening game, Assar raised his level considerably to complete an impressive comeback.

Goa immediately responded through Bernadette Szocs. The Romanian ace produced one of the most dominant performances of the afternoon, defeating France's Prithika Pavade in straight games. Szocs' aggressive attacking play and consistency completely nullified her opponent's challenge, earning her the Foreign Player of the Tie award.

Pune refused to back down and reduced the deficit through Anirban Ghosh and Diya Chitale in the mixed doubles before Snehit Suravajjula staged another comeback victory, defeating Spain's Alvaro Robles after dropping the opening game.

That result meant the tie would be decided in the final singles match.

With Goa's unbeaten record hanging in the balance, 16-year-old Syndrela Das once again demonstrated maturity beyond her years. Facing fellow Indian youngster Diya Chitale, Syndrela started confidently to take the opening game before Diya fought back to force a decider. The pressure was immense, but Syndrela remained calm during the crucial moments, producing a composed 11-8 victory in the deciding game to secure both the match and the overall tie for Goa.

Her performance earned her the Indian Player of the Tie award and further strengthened her reputation as one of the brightest young talents in Indian table tennis.

Omar Assar was named the ChatGPT Match IQ Player for Pune, while Anirban Ghosh claimed the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award.

Dream UTT Juniors Crown New Champions

Before the senior matches, U Mumba TT celebrated success in the Dream UTT Juniors competition, defeating Dabang Delhi TTC 5-2 in the final. Somdev Sengupta gave U Mumba the perfect start by winning the boys' singles before partnering Ahona Ray to victory in the mixed doubles. Ahona then completed an outstanding campaign by winning the girls' singles, sealing U Mumba's maiden Dream UTT Juniors title.

The competition continues to provide an important pathway for India's next generation of table tennis players, offering valuable exposure alongside the country's premier professional league.

Sunday's results have added further intrigue to the Butterfly UTT Season 7 standings. Dempo Goa Challengers remain the only unbeaten team in the competition, continuing to establish themselves as strong favourites for a direct place in the semi-finals. Their ability to grind out victories even when under pressure reflects the balance between experienced international stars and emerging Indian talent.

For HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades, the emphatic victory over UP Prometheans keeps their playoff hopes alive and provides valuable momentum heading into the final phase of the league stage. The continued excellence of Ankur Bhattacharjee and Ayhika Mukherjee has emerged as one of the defining stories of Kolkata's campaign.

Attention now shifts to Monday's fixture, where Ahmedabad will take on Dabang Delhi TTC in another crucial encounter that could significantly shape the race for the knockout stages of Butterfly UTT Season 7.
