Chennai Bulls Clinch Final Semi-Final Spot in HSBC Rugby Premier League Season 2 as Delhi Redz and Hyderabad Heroes Register Big Wins

The race for the knockout stages of the HSBC Rugby Premier League powered by Avid Season 2 reached a dramatic conclusion on Thursday as the Chennai Bulls secured the final semi-final berth after playing out a hard-fought 14-14 draw against the Bengaluru Bravehearts at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad.
It was an eventful day of rugby that also saw the Delhi Redz eliminate the Kolkata Banga Tigers with a 40-28 victory, while the Hyderabad Heroes delivered one of the most dominant performances of the season, blanking the Mumbai Dreamers 33-0 in front of their home fans.
The trio of matches had significant implications for the league standings, with Chennai's resilience proving enough to extend their campaign into the semi-finals.
Knowing that qualification was within reach, Chennai Bulls began their contest against Bengaluru Bravehearts with aggression and intent. The Bulls controlled possession in the early exchanges, using their physical approach and quick recycling of the ball to keep Bengaluru pinned deep inside their own territory. Their pressure eventually paid off when Santiago Alvarez finished a well-worked attacking move to hand Chennai the lead.
However, Bengaluru responded impressively. Showing patience in attack, they constructed a measured move that culminated with Jonas Mikalcius crossing over to level the scores at the end of the opening quarter. The second period turned into a defensive battle, with both sides closing down space effectively and limiting opportunities. Tackles came thick and fast, and neither team was able to establish sustained attacking momentum.
Following the restart, Bengaluru seized the initiative through Magomederassul Magomedov, whose powerful carrying created the platform for Akuila Rokolisoa to finish and give the Bravehearts the advantage. Facing the prospect of defeat, Chennai responded immediately. Mohit Khatri burst through the middle with a determined run to score a crucial try that restored parity and kept the Bulls' qualification hopes intact.
The closing stages saw Chennai apply sustained pressure in search of a winning score, but Bengaluru's disciplined defence held firm. The 14-14 draw ultimately proved enough for the Bulls to secure the final semi-final spot.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Redz produced an attacking masterclass to defeat Kolkata Banga Tigers 40-28, ending Kolkata's hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds. Delhi established control from the outset, patiently building phases before Nygel Amaitsa opened the scoring. Samuel Asati and Josep Serres soon added further tries as the Redz dominated possession and territory, while Hitesh Dagar extended their advantage with another clinical finish.
Kolkata finally found a response before half-time through Vuiviwa Naduvalo, who would go on to emerge as the standout performer for his side.
Although Serres struck again after the interval, Naduvalo almost single-handedly dragged the Tigers back into contention with two brilliant individual tries during the third quarter. His pace and creativity repeatedly troubled the Delhi defence and briefly raised hopes of an unlikely comeback.
However, Jon Okeyo restored breathing space for Delhi in the closing stages, and despite another moment of brilliance from Naduvalo, the Redz controlled possession effectively to close out a deserved 40-28 victory.
The defeat officially ended Kolkata Banga Tigers' semi-final aspirations.
The home supporters were treated to another commanding display as the Hyderabad Heroes overwhelmed the Mumbai Dreamers 33-0, producing one of the most complete performances of the tournament. Hyderabad's aggressive defensive pressure and swift ball movement left Mumbai struggling to establish any rhythm throughout the contest.
Manuel Moreno opened the scoring after a well-executed attacking move before Taitaifono Tavita exploited space on the wing to add another try. Tavita crossed again in the second quarter, while Francisco Cosculluela capitalised on sustained pressure as the Heroes continued to dominate territory.
Mumbai improved defensively after the break and managed to restrict scoring opportunities for a period, but they could find no way through Hyderabad's organised defence.
In the final quarter, Ravuama Seruvakula added another try to complete the scoring, sealing an emphatic shutout victory and reinforcing Hyderabad's credentials heading into the business end of the competition.
The conclusion of Day 10 leaves the HSBC Rugby Premier League entering its decisive phase with momentum building ahead of the semi-finals. For Chennai Bulls, qualification through a hard-earned draw highlighted their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. Delhi Redz's attacking display against Kolkata demonstrated their offensive firepower, while Hyderabad Heroes showcased a balanced game built on defensive solidity and clinical finishing.
As the tournament moves into the knockout rounds, all three sides will carry confidence from their latest performances. With Chennai securing the final semi-final berth and Delhi and Hyderabad producing statement victories, the stage is now set for an exciting finish to Season 2 of the HSBC Rugby Premier League.
