Hyderabad Heroes Finish Top of the Table, Semi-Final Line-up Confirmed in HSBC Rugby Premier League Season 2

The league stage of the HSBC Rugby Premier League powered by Avid Season 2 concluded in thrilling fashion on Friday, with the Hyderabad Heroes securing top spot in the standings following a commanding 28-0 victory over the Kolkata Banga Tigers at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
On a day that also saw Mumbai Dreamers defeat Chennai Bulls and Delhi Redz produce a dramatic comeback victory over Bengaluru Bravehearts, the semi-final line-up for Season 2 was officially confirmed.
Hyderabad Heroes will face Chennai Bulls in the first semi-final, while Bengaluru Bravehearts will take on Mumbai Dreamers in what promises to be another exciting knockout clash.
The Heroes entered their final league match knowing a victory would secure first place, and they left little doubt about their intentions. From the opening whistle, Hyderabad played with pace and precision, stretching Kolkata's defence through quick passing and intelligent movement across the width of the field.
Sumit Roy opened the scoring within the opening minutes, giving the home side the perfect start before Ravuama Seruvakula doubled the advantage with an excellent individual effort, selling a clever dummy before crossing over on the left wing.
Hyderabad continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the opening half.
Their relentless pressure eventually paid off again as Kevin Wekesa powered over following a sustained attacking phase, extending the lead and effectively putting the contest beyond Kolkata's reach.
The Heroes maintained the same intensity after the interval.
Maurice Longbottom added another try early in the third quarter, while Hyderabad's disciplined defensive structure ensured the Tigers never found a way into the game.
The comprehensive 28-0 victory completed one of Hyderabad's most dominant performances of the season and reinforced their status as genuine title favourites heading into the knockout stages.
Mumbai Dreamers also produced an impressive display, defeating Chennai Bulls 19-12 in a contest that showcased both attacking flair and defensive resilience. Mumbai established control early through aggressive defence and rapid transitions. Prince Khatri and James Turner both crossed over during the opening quarter, giving the Dreamers an early cushion.
After the restart, Sebastiaan Jobb showcased his pace with a superb run down the right wing to further increase Mumbai's advantage. The Bulls gradually responded after enjoying improved possession.
Hidayat Jerffrydin finally broke through to score Chennai's opening try before Marcus Kershaw finished another flowing move to narrow the deficit. Despite Chennai's late resurgence, Mumbai remained composed under pressure.
Their disciplined defensive effort during the closing stages prevented the Bulls from finding another breakthrough, ensuring they carried valuable momentum into the semi-finals.
Although Chennai suffered defeat, they had already secured qualification and will now look to regroup ahead of their meeting with Hyderabad Heroes.
The most dramatic contest of the day belonged to Delhi Redz, who produced a remarkable final-quarter comeback to defeat Bengaluru Bravehearts 35-33.
Bengaluru appeared to be cruising towards victory after making a flying start. Kitiona Vai crossed within seconds of kick-off before Akuila Rokolisoa extended the lead with a brilliant individual run. Vai added his second try after an excellent passing sequence, while Shilton Wyk's clever kick-and-chase and another score from Rokolisoa gave the Bravehearts a comfortable 12-point advantage heading into the final quarter.
Delhi, however, refused to surrender.
Gonzalez ignited the comeback with a try down the left wing before Josep Serres narrowed the margin with another finish out wide. Momentum completely shifted when Jon Okeyo intercepted possession and raced away on the counterattack to level the contest. The decisive moment arrived when Deepak Punia held his nerve to convert the winning score, completing one of the most memorable comebacks of the tournament.
Although the victory came too late to alter the semi-final picture, it provided Delhi with a fitting conclusion to their campaign while serving as a reminder of their attacking quality.
With the league stage complete, attention now turns to the knockout rounds. The Hyderabad Heroes, unbeaten and full of confidence after topping the standings, will face the Chennai Bulls, who remain one of the competition's most balanced sides despite Friday's defeat. The second semi-final pits Bengaluru Bravehearts against Mumbai Dreamers, two teams that have consistently produced entertaining attacking rugby throughout the season.
While Hyderabad enter the playoffs as favourites after their dominant group-stage performances, the margins between the top four sides have remained remarkably close, suggesting the title race is still wide open.
After weeks of high-intensity rugby and closely contested matches, the HSBC Rugby Premier League Season 2 has now reached its decisive phase.
With Hyderabad Heroes chasing a perfect finish, Mumbai Dreamers carrying momentum, Bengaluru eager to bounce back from a narrow defeat and Chennai looking to rediscover their best form, the stage is set for two compelling semi-finals and an exciting conclusion to India's premier franchise rugby competition.
