Hyderabad Heroes Clinch HSBC Rugby Premier League Season 2 Title with Dominant Win Over Mumbai Dreamers

Hyderabad Heroes capped off an outstanding campaign by defeating Mumbai Dreamers 41-17 in a commanding final to lift the HSBC Rugby Premier League powered by Avid Season 2 title at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Heroes produced an impressive display of attacking rugby and disciplined defence to outclass the Dreamers and finish the season as deserving champions. Organised by GMR Sports in partnership with Rugby India, the second edition of the league concluded on a high, reflecting the growing popularity of rugby in the country and marking another significant step in the sport's development.
The championship celebrations took place in the presence of Telangana Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy, GMR Group Corporate Chairman Kiran Kumar Grandhi, actor Chiranjeevi, Olympic medallist and world champion P. V. Sindhu, actress Mrunal Thakur, GMR Airports Chairman G.B.S. Raju, and Rugby India President and League Commissioner Rahul Bose.
Along with lifting the trophy, Hyderabad Heroes received the winner's prize of ₹45 lakh, while runners-up Mumbai Dreamers earned ₹25 lakh. Bengaluru Bravehearts secured third place and took home ₹15 lakh after defeating Chennai Bulls in the third-place playoff.
Although Mumbai Dreamers enjoyed the majority of possession during the early exchanges, Hyderabad Heroes demonstrated why they had been the most consistent team throughout the tournament. Instead of allowing Mumbai's possession to create scoring opportunities, Hyderabad's disciplined defensive line repeatedly forced turnovers before launching rapid counter-attacks.
The opening breakthrough came through Francisco Cosculluela, whose interception created the platform for Taitaifono Tavita to score the opening try.
Moments later, Hyderabad struck again. Captain Manuel Moreno won possession deep inside Mumbai territory, allowing Shivam Shukla to finish a simple scoring opportunity as the Heroes quickly established control of the contest.
The defending proved equally impressive as Hyderabad refused to allow Mumbai any easy opportunities.
Before half-time, experienced playmaker Maurice Longbottom added a crucial drop goal, extending Hyderabad's lead and giving the home side complete momentum heading into the interval.
Any hopes of a Mumbai comeback were quickly extinguished after the restart. Hyderabad maintained the same intensity that had characterised their first-half performance.
Taitaifono Tavita once again demonstrated his creative influence by creating space on the left flank for Diego Ardao, who crossed over to extend Hyderabad's advantage. Mumbai eventually found a breakthrough through Ethan McFarland, who benefited from quicker ball movement to register the Dreamers' first points of the final.
However, every time Mumbai threatened to reduce the deficit, Hyderabad produced another response. Ardao added his second try of the evening before Kevin Wekesa finished another flowing attacking move, underlining the Heroes' ability to convert turnovers into points with remarkable efficiency.
As the final entered its closing stages, Terio Tamani further increased Hyderabad's lead, effectively putting the championship beyond doubt. Mumbai continued to fight until the final whistle. James Turner crossed for a late try before also setting up Sukumar Hembrom for another score, but the late rally proved little more than consolation.
Hyderabad's relentless defensive pressure, clinical finishing and superior game management ensured they comfortably closed out a 41-17 victory.
The final result reflected Hyderabad Heroes' consistency across the entire tournament. After finishing at the top of the league standings, the Heroes defeated Chennai Bulls in an exciting semi-final before delivering their finest performance of the season in the championship match. Their ability to combine disciplined defence with expansive attacking rugby made them the standout team throughout Season 2. Players such as Manuel Moreno, Taitaifono Tavita, Maurice Longbottom, Diego Ardao and Kevin Wekesa consistently delivered when it mattered most, while the team's defensive organisation proved equally decisive during the knockout stages.
Earlier in the day, Bengaluru Bravehearts secured third place after edging Chennai Bulls 22-19 in a closely contested playoff. The victory ensured Bengaluru finished the tournament on a positive note after narrowly missing out on a place in the championship match.
Beyond the on-field action, Season 2 represented another milestone for rugby in India. The league attracted larger crowds, increased fan engagement and expanded commercial support compared to its inaugural edition. One of the biggest developments was the successful introduction of the RPL Women's competition, a significant step towards strengthening opportunities for women's rugby in India. Speaking after the final, Rugby India President and League Commissioner Rahul Bose described the second season as bigger and better in every aspect, highlighting stronger fan engagement, increased sponsorship, higher broadcast viewership and the successful launch of the women's league.
GMR Sports Chief Marketing Officer Sujoy Ganguly also emphasised the league's long-term vision of developing rugby in India by creating opportunities for young athletes, strengthening grassroots structures and building a sustainable sporting ecosystem.
The conclusion of the HSBC Rugby Premier League Season 2 represents far more than the crowning of a new champion. Over the past few weeks, the competition has showcased high-quality rugby, introduced more Indian fans to the sport and demonstrated that franchise rugby can continue to grow in the country. For Hyderabad Heroes, the season ended in the best possible way with the championship trophy in front of their home supporters.
For Indian rugby, the bigger victory lies in the league's continued progress.
With growing crowds, increased visibility, a successful women's competition and another entertaining season completed, the HSBC Rugby Premier League continues to establish itself as one of the country's most promising professional sporting competitions.
