The league stage of the HSBC Rugby Premier League powered by Avid Season 2 concluded in emphatic fashion on Friday as the Hyderabad Heroes finished at the top of the standings following a commanding 28-0 victory over the Kolkata Banga Tigers at the Gachibowli Stadium.
The final day of league action also saw the Mumbai Dreamers defeat the Chennai Bulls 19-12, while the Delhi Redz staged a remarkable comeback to edge the Bengaluru Bravehearts 35-33 in one of the most thrilling contests of the season.
With the group stage now complete, the semi-final fixtures have been confirmed. League leaders Hyderabad Heroes will face Chennai Bulls, while Bengaluru Bravehearts will take on Mumbai Dreamers for a place in the final.
The Heroes once again underlined why they have been the standout side of the tournament with another comprehensive performance. Playing in front of their home supporters, Hyderabad imposed themselves from the opening whistle through quick ball movement, aggressive defence and relentless attacking pressure.
The breakthrough arrived within minutes as Sumit Roy crossed over for the opening try after Hyderabad stretched Kolkata's defensive line with slick passing. The pressure continued to mount, and Ravuama Seruvakula doubled the advantage with an intelligent dummy before finishing confidently on the left wing.
Hyderabad's dominance was evident in every department. Their ability to recycle possession quickly and exploit gaps left the Tigers struggling to contain the relentless attacks. In the second quarter, Kevin Wekesa added another try after sustained pressure deep inside Kolkata territory, extending the lead before the interval.
The Heroes refused to ease off after the restart.
Maurice Longbottom added another try early in the third quarter to effectively put the contest beyond doubt, while Hyderabad's disciplined defensive unit ensured Kolkata failed to score throughout the match.
The emphatic 28-0 shutout highlighted Hyderabad's balance at both ends of the field and confirmed them as deserving table-toppers heading into the knockout stage.
The Mumbai Dreamers also entered the semi-finals on a positive note after overcoming the Chennai Bulls 19-12. Mumbai made a flying start by applying intense defensive pressure and capitalising on turnovers. Prince Khatri opened the scoring before James Turner quickly added another try to give the Dreamers early control of the contest.
Following the break, Sebastiaan Jobb showcased his pace by sprinting down the right wing to extend Mumbai's advantage and put Chennai under significant pressure.
The Bulls responded with improved possession and attacking structure. Hidayat Jerffrydin finally got Chennai on the scoreboard before Marcus Kershaw finished a flowing move down the left wing to reduce the deficit. Despite Chennai's late resurgence, Mumbai remained composed during the closing stages, defending resolutely to preserve their lead and secure a confidence-boosting victory before the semi-finals.
The most dramatic encounter of the day came in the final match as Delhi Redz overturned a 12-point deficit in the last quarter to defeat the Bengaluru Bravehearts 35-33.
Bengaluru looked set for victory after an explosive start. Kitiona Vai raced over within seconds to score the opening try before Samuel Asati responded for Delhi with a well-worked finish. The Bravehearts quickly regained control through Akuila Rokolisoa, whose blistering run restored their advantage. Vai then crossed for his second try following another slick attacking sequence.
Delhi stayed in contention thanks to Javed Hussain, but Bengaluru continued to dictate proceedings as Shilton Wyk executed a clever kick-and-chase before Rokolisoa added his second try of the evening.
Entering the final quarter trailing by 12 points, Delhi appeared to be heading towards defeat.
Instead, they produced one of the finest comebacks of the competition. Gonzalez sparked the revival with an important try from the left wing before Josep Serres narrowed the gap with another finish out wide. The momentum completely shifted when Jon Okeyo intercepted possession and sprinted away for a counter-attacking try that levelled the contest.
The decisive moment arrived when Deepak Punia held his nerve to convert the match-winning try, completing an extraordinary comeback and sealing a memorable 35-33 victory.
With the league phase complete, attention now turns to the knockout rounds. Hyderabad Heroes enter the semi-finals as the tournament favourites after finishing first in the standings. Their dominant attack and disciplined defence have made them the most consistent team throughout the competition.
They will face the Chennai Bulls, who secured qualification despite Friday's defeat to Mumbai.
The second semi-final promises to be equally competitive, with Bengaluru Bravehearts looking to bounce back from their heartbreaking loss against an in-form Mumbai Dreamers side that appears to be peaking at the right time.
After an exciting group stage filled with high-scoring encounters, dramatic comebacks and outstanding individual performances, the HSBC Rugby Premier League Season 2 now moves into its most crucial phase.
With Hyderabad carrying momentum as league leaders and the remaining three teams all capable of producing match-winning performances, the battle for the inaugural Season 2 title is set for an exciting conclusion.
