India's Putul Sonowal suffered his first defeat of the Commonwealth Games 2026 lawn bowls competition on Saturday, going down 4-8, 8-9 to Malaysia's Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in the men's singles Section D encounter.

Needing to win the second set to force the match deeper, Sonowal delivered his best bowls of the contest. Unlike the opening set, neither player managed to establish a significant advantage.

The Indian displayed far greater accuracy, matching Dzulkeple shot for shot throughout a tense battle that remained undecided until the closing stages. Every end carried enormous importance. Sonowal repeatedly found ways to stay within touching distance, refusing to allow the Malaysian to pull away. The match briefly came to a halt after the sixth end when Sonowal requested a timeout.

The interruption did little to alter the contest's momentum. Both players continued exchanging high-quality bowls before Dzulkeple eventually edged the second set 9-8, completing a straight-sets victory. Despite the defeat, the narrow margin reflected how closely contested the second half of the match had become.

The result leaves Section D delicately poised heading into the final round of league matches. Dzulkeple now occupies top spot with an unbeaten record, while Sonowal sits second following his first loss of the competition. The tournament format offers no margin for error. Only the section winner advances to the semifinals, meaning finishing second—even with multiple victories—will end the campaign.

As a result, Sonowal now faces a straightforward but difficult equation. First, he must defeat Shaun Parnis of Malta in Sunday's final sectional fixture.

Even that, however, may not be enough. The Indian will also require favourable results elsewhere if he is to reclaim first place and secure qualification.

Although the loss will undoubtedly disappoint Sonowal, there were encouraging aspects to his performance. His comeback after falling behind in the first set demonstrated resilience, while the narrow 9-8 defeat in the second underlined that he was capable of matching one of the world's most accomplished bowlers. Perhaps most importantly, the Indian has already shown during this tournament that he possesses the temperament required to compete at the highest level.

Victories over Ryan Bester and other experienced opponents were not achieved by accident. Those performances provide confidence that he remains capable of producing another strong display when it matters most.
