Díaz Dazzles as Diamond Harbour Demolish Gokulam Kerala 5-2, Seal Round One Dominance

It was a night of contrasting fortunes at the Kalyani Stadium on Saturday. For Diamond Harbour FC, it was a statement of intent a thunderous 5-2 dismantling of Gokulam Kerala FC that confirmed their position as the team to beat in the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26.

For the Malabarians, it was a sobering reality check that sealed their place in the relegation phase, leaving the two-time champions staring down the barrel ahead of a fight for survival. Spanish midfielder Hugo Díaz was the architect of Diamond Harbour's triumph, bagging a brace in the second half and earning the Player of the Match award. But this was far more than a one-man show it was a collective, clinical performance from Kibu Vicuña's side that spoke volumes about their credentials as serious title contenders. Gokulam Kerala, to their credit, started the brighter of the two sides and were rewarded with an early lead. In the 17th minute, Cameroonian defender Bouba Aminou, left criminally unmarked inside the box, powered home a header from Mirjalol Kasimov's corner delivery to silence the home crowd.

The visitors looked dangerous throughout the first half, with Thabiso Brown particularly threatening the striker struck the crossbar, had another effort cleared off the line, and generally kept the Diamond Harbour backline on edge. But fortunes shifted just before the interval. Paul Ramfangzauva threaded a perfectly weighted through ball to captain Jobby Justin, who rolled a precise cross into the box. Luka Majcen, with a poacher's instinct, arrived at precisely the right moment to nod past the goalkeeper and against his former club, no less sending the sides level into the break.

The second half began at a breathless pace, with four goals arriving in the opening 15 minutes alone. Díaz ignited the scoring spree in the 50th minute with a composed finish from Halicharan Narzary's cutback, before adding his second just three minutes later a sharp volley after capitalising on hesitant defending from a long throw-in. It was the kind of opportunism that separates quality from ordinary, and Díaz had it in abundance. Gokulam Kerala pulled one back through Rahul Raju in the 57th minute a thumping header from Moses Lalrinzuala's cross to the back post. The Malabarians, to their credit, never gave up. But Diamond Harbour were simply relentless. Captain Jobby Justin rose above his marker to glance in a looping header from Robilal Mandi's delivery in the 61st minute, effectively killing the contest at 4-2.

Díaz nearly completed a hat-trick moments later, only to be denied by the crossbar. And as Gokulam threw caution to the wind and committed bodies forward, Diamond Harbour punished them on the counter once more. Halicharan, imperious throughout the evening, unselfishly set up substitute R. Ramdinthara, who stroked the ball home with ease to make it five. Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem was called into action late on, producing a fine stop to tip a Benjamin Kuku effort onto the post, but neither side found the net again as the referee brought proceedings to a close.

The result carries significant weight in the context of the season. Diamond Harbour concluded Round One at the summit with an impressive 22 points from nine matches, holding at least a four-point cushion over their nearest challengers heading into the Championship phase. Their rise has been nothing short of remarkable a club founded in 2020, promoted through the divisions, and now standing tall as the standard-bearers of Indian football's second tier.

For Gokulam Kerala, the evening confirmed their worst fears. Stranded in the bottom four with just eight points, the two-time champions now face the grim prospect of a relegation battle. Head coach Dimitris Dimitriou's task ahead is as challenging as they come restructuring a side that has shown glimpses of quality but lacked consistency and defensive discipline across the season. Vicuña's men, on the other hand, march forward with momentum, confidence, and a squad that appears to have the depth and quality to sustain a title challenge. With Díaz pulling the strings in midfield, Halicharan providing electric width, and Justin leading from the front, Diamond Harbour look every inch like champions-in-waiting.

Round Two of the Indian Football League awaits and on this evidence, it will take something extraordinary to dislodge Diamond Harbour from the top of the pile.

Diamond Harbour FC: 5 (Majcen 31', Díaz 50', 53', Justin 61', Ramdinthara 71') Gokulam Kerala FC: 2 (Aminou 17', Rahul Raju 57') Player of the Match: Hugo Díaz (Diamond Harbour FC)
