India's Tirthank Pegu has qualified for the men's 100m butterfly final at the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, after producing an impressive performance in the heats on Sunday.

The 16-year-old swimmer clocked 55.15 seconds to finish second in his heat and third overall across the four heats, securing his place among the finalists. The qualification marks an important achievement for Indian swimming at the Youth Olympic Games. Pegu becomes only the second Indian swimmer to reach a swimming final at the competition, following Srihari Nataraj, who qualified for the boys' 100m backstroke final at the 2018 edition.

For Pegu, the result is another significant milestone in a promising young career. The swimmer from Assam has steadily built his reputation through performances at the national and continental levels, and his qualification in Dakar provides an opportunity to compete for a major international medal.

Pegu recorded 55.15 seconds in the men's 100m butterfly heats, finishing behind Egypt's Zain Ali, who topped the overall standings with 53.96 seconds, and Slovakia's Matias Kristof, who clocked 54.68 seconds. The Indian's third-place overall finish was enough to secure qualification for the final. He finished ahead of several competitors, including Serbia's Aleksej Kalanj (55.16), Algeria's Salaheddine Torki (55.97), Kenya's Jeremy Rieck (56.14), the Philippines' Jamesray Michael Ajido (56.33) and the Czech Republic's Zdenek Prochazka (56.38).

The narrow margins underline the importance of Pegu's performance. His 55.15-second timing was just 0.01 seconds faster than Kalanj, who finished fourth overall. In a competitive event where hundredths of a second can determine qualification, Pegu managed to secure his place in the final.

The Indian swimmer will now have another opportunity to improve his performance when the finalists return to the pool for the medal race.

A chance to improve on his personal best

Pegu's qualifying time of 55.15 seconds is close to his personal best of 54.90 seconds, which he achieved at the Singapore Age Group Championship in March 2026. The difference between the two timings is just 0.25 seconds, indicating that he has been operating close to his best level on the Youth Olympic stage. However, there could still be room for improvement, particularly in the opening half of the race.

The Indian swimmer will be looking to make a stronger start in the final and build on the performance that earned him qualification. With the fastest qualifiers expected to challenge for the podium, improving his execution across both lengths will be important.

Pegu's third-fastest qualifying position also gives him a realistic opportunity to compete against the leading swimmers in the final. While the heats have established his place among the contenders, the medal race will demand another high-quality performance.

Pegu's qualification is the latest development in a progression that has already included significant achievements in junior swimming. The Assam swimmer has made his mark at national competitions, including setting a Junior National Championship record, before adding an international medal with silver at the Asian Youth Games.

His selection for Dakar 2026 represents another step in his development. Pegu is competing in both the men's 100m and 200m butterfly events at the Youth Olympic Games, giving him two opportunities to test himself against some of the strongest young swimmers in the world.

The 100m butterfly qualification is particularly encouraging because of the historical significance for Indian swimming at the Youth Olympics. Srihari Nataraj had previously reached the final of the boys' 100m backstroke in 2018. Pegu's achievement now adds another milestone to India's participation in the swimming competition at the Games.

For Indian swimming, such performances are important indicators of the progress being made at the junior level. Reaching a Youth Olympic final provides athletes with exposure to high-pressure international competition and an opportunity to measure themselves against their global peers.

Pegu's immediate focus will be on converting his qualifying performance into an even stronger showing in the final. His 55.15-second swim has placed him third overall, but the competition for medals will be determined by how effectively he can execute his race against the leading qualifiers.

His personal best of 54.90 seconds offers a clear target. A performance close to or better than that mark would strengthen his challenge, although the final will demand precision, speed and composure. Regardless of the eventual result, reaching the men's 100m butterfly final is a major achievement for the young Indian. From setting a junior national record to winning silver at the Asian Youth Games and now reaching a Youth Olympic final, Pegu's progress reflects a promising trajectory.

The swimmer from Assam has already ensured that his name will feature among the finalists in Dakar. The next opportunity is to turn that qualification into a memorable performance on the Youth Olympic stage.
