Indian tennis continued its impressive week on the ATP Challenger Tour as Dhakshineswar Suresh produced one of the biggest wins of his professional career, upsetting former World No. 135 Mitchell Krueger in the opening round of qualifying at the ATP Challenger 75 Cary Tennis Classic in the United States.

Ranked World No. 477, the Indian delivered a commanding performance to defeat the top seed in the qualifying draw 6-1, 6-4, booking his place in the final qualifying round and moving one win away from a place in the main draw. The victory was particularly significant considering Suresh had lost his only previous meeting against Krueger last year. This time, however, the Indian displayed remarkable composure and served at an exceptional level to completely outplay the experienced American.

From the opening game, Suresh looked in complete control. The Indian immediately imposed himself behind his serve, consistently winning free points and preventing Krueger from settling into the contest. His aggressive approach paid off handsomely. Suresh dominated the first set, breaking the American multiple times before wrapping it up 6-1 in emphatic fashion.

The second set proved more competitive as Krueger attempted to raise his level, but Suresh refused to allow the momentum to shift. Maintaining the same confidence on serve and remaining composed during longer rallies, the Indian closed out the match 6-4 to complete a memorable straight-sets victory.

For a player ranked over 120 places below his opponent, it was a performance that reflected both confidence and maturity.

The statistics underline just how dominant Suresh was throughout the contest. He fired 10 aces, repeatedly troubling Krueger with the pace and accuracy of his first serve.

Even more impressive was his efficiency behind that delivery. Suresh won 33 of the 38 points played on his first serve, an outstanding success rate that left Krueger with very few opportunities to attack. Perhaps the most telling statistic came under pressure.

The Indian faced just one break point during the entire match and saved it. That ability to protect his serve proved decisive and demonstrated the confidence with which he approached one of the biggest matches of his season.

The result carried additional significance because of the pair's previous meeting. Krueger had defeated Suresh when they met last season, making Sunday's victory an important step in the Indian's development. Learning from previous defeats is an essential part of life on the professional tour, and Suresh showed exactly that.

His tactical adjustments, improved serving and greater composure under pressure highlighted the progress he has made over the past year. Beating an experienced player like Krueger is another indication that Suresh is becoming increasingly comfortable competing at Challenger level.

Although currently ranked World No. 350, Mitchell Krueger possesses significantly more experience than his ranking suggests. The American has previously climbed as high as World No. 135, competing regularly on the ATP Challenger Tour while also making appearances at Grand Slam qualifying events. Known for his consistency from the baseline and experience in pressure situations, Krueger entered the tournament as one of the favourites to qualify for the main draw.

That makes Suresh's victory even more impressive.

Defeating a former Top-150 player in straight sets is the kind of result capable of boosting both confidence and ranking momentum.

The Indian's task, however, is not yet complete. Suresh must now overcome another talented opponent in the final qualifying round.

Awaiting him is Samir Banerjee, the American who won the 2021 Wimbledon Boys' Singles title and is currently ranked World No. 416. Banerjee has steadily established himself on the professional circuit over the past few seasons and will provide another difficult challenge. A victory would secure Suresh a coveted place in the main draw of the ATP Challenger 75 event and another valuable opportunity to earn ATP ranking points.

Suresh's breakthrough result continues an encouraging period for Indian men's singles tennis. Just days after Sumit Nagal lifted the ATP Challenger title in Romania to return to the world's Top 220, another Indian player has delivered an eye-catching performance on the Challenger circuit. The growing number of Indian players producing competitive performances at ATP Challenger events reflects the improving depth within the country's men's singles programme.

For younger professionals like Suresh, victories against experienced international opponents provide invaluable confidence and experience.

At 477 in the ATP Rankings, every Challenger victory represents an important opportunity to climb closer to the world's top 300. Qualifying for Challenger main draws consistently is often the first major step towards building momentum on the professional tour. Suresh has already taken the hardest step by defeating the highest-seeded player in qualifying.

Now, just one match stands between him and another milestone in his career. If he can reproduce the serving quality, composure and attacking intent that dismantled Mitchell Krueger, the Indian will have every chance of progressing to the Cary Challenger main draw.

For now, though, Sunday's victory stands as one of the finest wins of his career a performance that showcased his growing potential and suggested that Indian tennis may have another player ready to make his mark on the ATP Challenger Tour.
