India's Dhinidhi Desinghu continued her impressive rise in international swimming by qualifying for the women's 100m freestyle final at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

The Indian national record holder clocked 56.80 seconds in the heats to finish third overall, securing her place in the medal race and creating a significant milestone for Indian swimming. Desinghu topped Heat 9, producing the fastest performance in her heat before emerging with the third-best time across all competitors. Her performance puts her among the leading contenders heading into the final, scheduled for 9:02 pm IST.

The qualification is historic, with Desinghu becoming the first Indian female swimmer to reach a final at the Youth Olympic Games. It represents another important achievement for a swimmer who has already experienced the highest level of international competition despite her young age.

Desinghu clocked 56.80 seconds in the women's 100m freestyle heats, finishing ahead of the other competitors in Heat 9. Her timing placed her third in the overall standings, behind Croatia's Ana Babanovic and New Zealand's Alyssa Lawson, who finished first and second respectively.

Babanovic topped the heats with 56.22 seconds, while Lawson recorded 56.53 seconds. Desinghu's 56.80 was enough to secure the third qualification position, placing her firmly among the finalists.

The Indian swimmer came close to her personal best of 56.57 seconds. Although she did not better that mark, her performance demonstrated the consistency required to compete against the leading swimmers in the field. The results also highlighted the narrow margins separating the qualifiers. Desinghu finished 0.58 seconds behind the fastest swimmer, underlining the competitive standard of the event. Her third-place overall finish gives her a strong starting position for the final, where she will have an opportunity to challenge for a podium finish.

Reaching the final is a landmark achievement for Indian swimming at the Youth Olympic Games. Her progression is particularly noteworthy given the level of experience she has accumulated at a young age. Desinghu made her Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games when she was just 14 years old. Competing at the senior Olympic level so early in her career provided exposure to an environment that few young Indian swimmers have experienced.

She has continued to build on that experience, and her qualification for the Dakar final represents another step in her development.

Desinghu's achievements also include winning seven gold medals at the 2023 National Games, establishing herself as one of India's most promising swimming talents. Her national record-holder status in the 100m freestyle further underlines her position among the country's leading swimmers.

Opportunity to challenge for a Youth Olympic medal

The final will present Desinghu with an opportunity to turn her historic qualification into a podium finish. Her third-fastest time in the heats places her among the leading competitors, although the final will require another strong performance against a field featuring some of the best young swimmers in the competition.

The difference between her heat timing of 56.80 seconds and her personal best of 56.57 is just 0.23 seconds. A performance closer to, or better than, her personal best could put her in contention for a medal. However, the final will demand more than simply reproducing her heat performance.

The swimmers will need to manage their race strategy, maintain speed through the second half and execute their turns efficiently. With the margins between the leading qualifiers relatively small, even minor improvements could influence the final standings.

For Desinghu, the immediate priority will be to approach the race with confidence and deliver her best performance on the day.

The significance of her achievement goes beyond an individual result. Becoming the first Indian female swimmer to reach a Youth Olympic final provides an important benchmark for the next generation of Indian swimmers and demonstrates the potential to compete at the highest levels of junior international swimming.

With the women's 100m freestyle final scheduled for 9:02 pm IST, all eyes will be on Desinghu as she prepares for the biggest race of her Dakar campaign. Having already secured a place in the final with the third-fastest heat performance, the Indian now has an opportunity to add a Youth Olympic medal to her growing list of achievements.

Whatever the final outcome, Desinghu has already made history in Dakar. The next challenge is to convert that breakthrough into a podium finish.
