Indian football witnessed a historic milestone on October 10, 2026, as Diamond Singh Thokchom became the youngest player to feature in the Indian Super League (ISL).

At just 16 years and 119 days old, the SC Delhi midfielder entered the record books during his team's season-opening encounter against Bengaluru FC at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

Introduced by head coach Tomasz Tchórz in the 73rd minute, Thokchom surpassed the previous record held by NorthEast United FC's Alfred Lalroutsang, who made his ISL debut at 16 years and 239 days in February 2020. The achievement marks a significant moment for Indian football, particularly for the country's youth development system and the growing pathway from academy football to the professional game.

Although SC Delhi eventually suffered a 3-2 defeat against Bengaluru FC, the result could not overshadow the significance of Thokchom's appearance. His debut demonstrated the club's willingness to trust young talent in competitive situations, even when the stakes are high.

Thokchom's appearance establishes a new benchmark for the youngest player to feature in an official ISL match. Born on June 13, 2010, the Manipuri midfielder was precisely 16 years and 119 days old when he stepped onto the pitch against Bengaluru FC. Lalroutsang had held the record since February 2020, when he appeared for NorthEast United FC at 16 years and 239 days. Thokchom has now lowered that benchmark by 120 days, highlighting how the transition from youth football to senior competition is evolving in India.

Other teenagers have also made early appearances in the league. East Bengal's Guite Vanlalpeka featured at 16 years and 337 days, while Komal Thatal made his ISL debut at 17 years and 132 days after emerging through India's youth football system.

Thokchom's achievement must also be distinguished from the record for the youngest player to start an ISL match. That benchmark belongs to Punjab FC defender Pramveer Singh, who started a game at 17 years and 189 days in December 2024. Thokchom, however, now holds the record for the youngest player to appear in the competition, whether as a starter or substitute.

A debut in a demanding match situation

The circumstances surrounding Thokchom's introduction added significance to the occasion. SC Delhi were protecting a narrow lead against a Bengaluru FC side that had increased its attacking pressure during the second half.

Bengaluru opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through Borja Martínez, who finished after an assist from Ryan Williams. SC Delhi responded four minutes later, with Brazilian forward Rodriguinho converting a transition initiated by midfielder Lalrinliana Hnamte.

Delhi then moved ahead in the 32nd minute when Bengaluru defender Menno Koch inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure. Holding a 2-1 advantage into the second half, SC Delhi faced sustained pressure as Bengaluru attempted to exploit the wide areas and spaces between the defensive and midfield lines.

Tchórz responded with a triple substitution in the 73rd minute, introducing veteran defender Ashutosh Mehta, forward Carlos Fortes and Thokchom. The teenager replaced Sanatomba Singh Yanglem, taking on his role in the midfield structure during a demanding away fixture.

Bengaluru equalised just two minutes later, with Borja scoring his second goal of the evening from a delivery by Mihailo Perović. The hosts subsequently completed their comeback in the 89th minute, when Menno Koch scored from an assist by substitute Soham Varshneya.

Despite the late defeat, Thokchom's introduction represented a landmark moment for both the player and SC Delhi.

From Manipur's grassroots football to the ISL

Thokchom's journey reflects the importance of grassroots development and structured academy pathways in Indian football. Raised in Bishnupur, Manipur, he began his football development at the Thokchom Yaima Development Academy at the age of four. His early training focused on close ball control, agility and technical fundamentals, providing the foundation for his subsequent progression through organised youth football.

He later moved through FC Imphal City's development setup, Sudeva Delhi's youth ranks and Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools. His selection into the AIFF-FIFA Talent Academy marked another important stage, exposing him to a more structured development environment focused on tactical awareness, physical conditioning and positional understanding.

Thokchom primarily operates as an attacking or central midfielder, although he can also function as an inverted winger. His technical profile includes close-control dribbling, the ability to operate in congested areas and an understanding of how to connect central progression with wide attacking movements.

His international experience has also contributed to his development. Thokchom featured in India's victorious 2025 SAFF U-17 Championship campaign, scoring during the team's 3-0 semi-final victory over Nepal. He also represented India at the 2026 AFC U-17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia and participated in international preparatory matches against Türkiye, Indonesia and South Korea.

Before his ISL appearance, he made his competitive senior debut during the 2026 Durand Cup in August. His subsequent inclusion in SC Delhi's first-team plans reflects the club's decision to retain him rather than send him out on loan for further development.

Thokchom's achievement offers encouragement for India's youth development pathway, but it also highlights the challenge of converting early promise into a sustainable senior career. The physical intensity of professional football, the speed of decision-making and the demands of tactical discipline differ considerably from age-group competitions. Young players require carefully managed workloads, appropriate opportunities and consistent technical support to negotiate that transition.

For SC Delhi, the priority will be to provide Thokchom with an environment in which he can continue developing without placing unrealistic expectations on his shoulders. His record-breaking debut should be viewed as the beginning of that process rather than a guarantee of future success.

At 16 years and 119 days, Diamond Singh Thokchom has already achieved something unprecedented in ISL history. His next challenge is to turn that milestone into the foundation of a lasting professional career, while inspiring more young footballers across India to pursue the pathway from grassroots academies to the country's top division.
