Irfan Yadwad became the first Indian goalscorer of ISL Season 13 with his strike against FC Goa after limited minutes for India and a difficult 2025–26 campaign.

Six minutes against Brazil, no playing time against Panama and Uruguay, and a difficult domestic campaign behind him. Irfan Yadwad entered the 2026–27 Indian Super League season with questions surrounding his form and place in India's attacking plans. His opening-day goal for Chennaiyin FC against FC Goa offered an immediate response.

Indian football often swings between extremes when evaluating its domestic forwards. A promising performance can generate calls for greater international opportunities, while a prolonged scoring drought can invite doubts about a player's ability to deliver at the highest level. Irfan Yadwad has experienced both sides of that conversation, and his strike against FC Goa on October 10 provided a timely reminder of his finishing ability.

The Chennaiyin FC forward became the first Indian player to score in the 2026–27 Indian Super League season, commercially branded as MG ISL Season 13. His goal gave the Marina Machans the lead at Fatorda before FC Goa recovered to secure a 1-1 draw. The result denied Chennaiyin a winning start, but Yadwad's contribution carried significance beyond the opening-day points.

The commentary surrounding Yadwad's goal referenced his limited involvement during India's September–October international window. India faced Panama, Brazil and Uruguay, but the Chennaiyin forward struggled for opportunities under head coach Khalid Jamil.

Yadwad remained an unused substitute against Panama and Uruguay, while his appearance against Brazil came only in the 84th minute. He accumulated just six minutes of playing time across the three fixtures, leaving little opportunity to influence matches against international opposition.

The distinction matters. Being part of a national squad offers valuable exposure to a higher level of training and tactical preparation, but competitive minutes remain important for an attacking player who depends on timing, movement and confidence in front of goal.

Yadwad returned to club football needing to convert that limited international involvement into a positive domestic performance. Against FC Goa, he did precisely that.

The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute of the contest between Chennaiyin FC and FC Goa. Receiving an incisive pass from full-back Namgyal Bhutia, Yadwad found space on the right side of the penalty area and drove a right-footed shot across goalkeeper Bob Raj.

The strike was powerful and decisive, finding the bottom-left corner despite the goalkeeper's attempted intervention. It was a moment of sharp execution in a contest that had offered limited attacking separation.

Yadwad's celebration added another layer to the moment. The forward performed Cristiano Ronaldo's trademark SIUUU celebration, an emphatic expression of emotion after opening his account for the campaign. For Chennaiyin, the goal provided an encouraging sign that their domestic attacking options could make an impact. For Yadwad personally, it was an opportunity to redirect the conversation from his limited international involvement and previous season's numbers towards his immediate contribution on the pitch.

FC Goa eventually equalised in the 75th minute through Spanish forward Chiki, who headed home from an Aakash Sangwan set piece. Neither side found a winner, leaving Chennaiyin with a point rather than the victory their opener had briefly promised.

Nevertheless, Yadwad's finish ensured that an Indian forward, rather than an overseas recruit, claimed the distinction of scoring the first goal by an Indian player in the new ISL season.

The difficult year behind the breakthrough

The goal was particularly relevant given Yadwad's struggles during the 2025–26 campaign. He scored twice in 11 league appearances, accumulating 990 minutes for Chennaiyin FC. Although he continued to find opportunities to shoot, his output did not match the expectations that had followed his emergence.

Those expectations had risen after his international debut against Malaysia in November 2024 and his recognition as the ISL Emerging Player of the Month in March 2025. His performances had encouraged hopes that he could become an important option for India's senior attack. The subsequent dip illustrates the difficult transition faced by young forwards. Defenders adapt to their movement, available space becomes harder to exploit, and the margin for error in front of goal narrows. For domestic players already competing for limited opportunities in central attacking positions, a period without goals can quickly become a wider debate about their suitability for the role.

Yadwad's opening-day strike does not erase those concerns, nor does one goal settle questions about his long-term consistency. It does, however, provide an early foundation on which he can build.

Yadwad's journey to the ISL has not followed a conventional elite-academy route. Raised in South Goa, he overcame a serious meniscus injury in 2019 before rebuilding his career through regional football. His subsequent performances for Panjim Footballers and FC Bengaluru United demonstrated his goalscoring potential. At Bengaluru United, he delivered an especially productive spell, scoring 36 goals in 34 matches across competitions according to the career figures supplied for this report. His performances in the lower divisions helped earn him a move to Chennaiyin FC in 2023.

That background is relevant because his development has involved repeated adjustments to different competitive environments. His challenge now is to translate his lower-division productivity into sustained performances in the ISL, where defensive organisation and the quality of opposition leave fewer clear opportunities.

Yadwad's opening goal gives Chennaiyin an encouraging attacking reference point, but consistency will determine whether he can establish himself as a dependable first-choice forward. Regular starts, tactical stability and quality service will be important. Chennaiyin must create situations in which he can attack the penalty area rather than rely exclusively on isolated chances. For Yadwad, improving his finishing consistency and contribution outside the penalty box will help him become a more complete attacking option.

His international ambitions will also depend on sustained club performances. A single goal cannot guarantee a return to the national team's plans, but a productive run of matches would strengthen his case.

The reaction to Yadwad captures the volatility of Indian football fandom: a player can be questioned during a difficult spell and celebrated after one decisive moment. Neither extreme tells the complete story.

At Fatorda, Yadwad did not resolve every question surrounding his development. He delivered something more immediate: a goal, a positive start to the season and a reminder that his quality remains relevant to Chennaiyin FC's ambitions. The next challenge is to make that moment the beginning of a consistent campaign rather than an isolated highlight.
