East Bengal Thrash Mohun Bagan 4-1 to Win Durand Cup 2026 After 22-Year Wait

East Bengal defeated arch-rivals Mohun Bagan 4-1 in the Durand Cup 2026 final, with Edmund Lalrindika scoring a first-half hat-trick as the club won its 17th title.
East Bengal produced one of the most memorable performances in the history of the Kolkata derby, thrashing arch-rivals Mohun Bagan 4-1 to win the Durand Cup 2026 and end a 22-year wait for the prestigious title.
The Red and Gold Brigade were inspired by a stunning first-half hat-trick from Edmund Lalrindika, while Bipin Singh also found the net in a dominant display in the final. Mohun Bagan's Manvir Singh pulled one back, but there was no way back for the Mariners after East Bengal's devastating opening 45 minutes.
The victory gave East Bengal their 17th Durand Cup title, drawing level with Mohun Bagan as the joint-most successful clubs in the history of the competition. It was also a night that will be remembered for years by East Bengal supporters, who watched their team dismantle their biggest rivals on one of Indian football's biggest stages.
The final did not begin with East Bengal dominating possession. Mohun Bagan started brightly and created the early attacking moments. In the opening minutes, they pushed forward through Manvir Singh and Jamie Maclaren, with East Bengal's defence forced to make important interventions. But despite the early pressure, it was East Bengal who delivered the first major blow.
In the 10th minute, Bipin Singh opened the scoring. Mohammed Rashid won possession in the opposition half and disguised his intentions before playing the ball through to Bipin. The East Bengal forward kept his composure inside the penalty area, took a touch and slotted his finish past the goalkeeper into the bottom corner.
It was East Bengal's first major opportunity of the game. It would not be their last.
Just two minutes later, the Red and Gold Brigade doubled their advantage through Edmund Lalrindika. Playing in the striker's role, Edmund received the ball outside the penalty area and took the initiative. Despite several bodies in front of him, he kept his shot low and found the back of the net to give East Bengal a remarkable 2-0 lead.
Mohun Bagan had started strongly, but within minutes they found themselves chasing the game. The contrast was striking. Mohun Bagan had the attacking momentum early, but East Bengal were ruthless with their chances.
Edmund takes over the Kolkata derby
If the first goal had put Mohun Bagan under pressure, Edmund's second effectively transformed the contest. In the 22nd minute, East Bengal produced a superb team move. Bhatt started the attack from the right before finding Ramirez, who played a perfectly weighted ball through to Edmund.
The forward took a touch to enter the penalty area and another to beat the advancing goalkeeper before calmly finishing into an empty net. East Bengal were 3-0 ahead after just 22 minutes. The scoreline stunned Mohun Bagan, who had little time to recover from one setback before the next arrived. Their attempts to respond were met by an organised East Bengal defence, while the Red and Gold side continued to threaten on the counter.
Manvir Singh did offer Mohun Bagan hope in the 33rd minute. He was played through on the right side of the box, cut inside and fired towards goal. The ball made its way through the defence and, despite a touch from the goalkeeper, crossed the line. At 3-1, the game appeared to have a small opening for a comeback.
But Edmund had other ideas. Just before half-time, East Bengal struck again. Rashid delivered a cross towards the far side of the box, where Jay Gupta arrived and squared the ball into the middle. Edmund was waiting, and he tapped home to complete his hat-trick.
A first-half hat-trick in a Durand Cup final against Mohun Bagan was the perfect individual performance on the biggest possible stage. East Bengal went into the break leading 4-1. Despite having less of the ball for parts of the opening half, they had been devastating in transition, moving the ball forward quickly and punishing Mohun Bagan's defensive mistakes with remarkable efficiency.
The second half required a completely different approach from East Bengal. With a three-goal lead, the priority shifted from attacking relentlessly to protecting the advantage. Mohun Bagan made changes and increased their pressure, searching for an early second goal that could have changed the momentum. But East Bengal remained organised.
The defence held its shape, blocked attempts and prevented Mohun Bagan from finding clear openings. When opportunities did arrive, goalkeeper Gill was alert.
East Bengal was also still dangerous on the counter. Bipin had a chance to extend the lead, while Jesin later found himself through on goal but took one touch too many, allowing the goalkeeper to make the save. At the other end, Mohun Bagan continued to push forward, but frustration began to show as passes broke down and attacking moves failed to create the breakthrough they desperately needed.
The final minutes belonged to East Bengal. As the clock ran down, their supporters began celebrating. Red and Gold scarves were raised, while Mohun Bagan's players and supporters were left facing the reality of a comprehensive derby defeat.
When the final whistle blew, East Bengal had secured a famous 4-1 victory.
The significance of the victory extended beyond one match. East Bengal's triumph brought their Durand Cup tally to 17, drawing them level with Mohun Bagan as the most successful clubs in the history of the tournament. For East Bengal, ending the 22-year wait for the title made the achievement even more significant.
But the manner of the victory will perhaps be remembered as much as the trophy itself. This was not a narrow win decided by a late goal or penalties. East Bengal blew their rivals away in the first half, scoring four times and leaving Mohun Bagan with an almost impossible task after 45 minutes.
At the centre of it all was Edmund Lalrindika. His hat-trick turned a major final into a personal statement and ensured that his name would be permanently associated with one of East Bengal's great derby victories. Bipin's early goal provided the platform. Edmund then took over.
By half-time, the final was effectively decided. East Bengal had waited 22 years to lift the Durand Cup again. On August 23, 2026, they did it by defeating the one opponent their supporters most wanted to beat. A 4-1 scoreline. A first-half hat-trick. A record-equalling 17th title.
For East Bengal, the Durand Cup 2026 final was more than a trophy-winning night. It was a statement in the Kolkata derby.
