The world’s biggest chess stars are set to return to India as the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Season 4 heads to Bengaluru from September 5 to 13, 2026, with ticket sales now live on BookMyShow.
The fourth season of the Global Chess League will bring together six global franchises and some of the sport’s biggest names at The Lalit Ashok. Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers, led by Magnus Carlsen, will return to defend their title, while Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand and world-class Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi will feature for PBG Alaskan Knights.
The tournament will also see Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Javokhir Sindarov and India’s Nihal Sarin among the leading stars in action.
Early Bird tickets for the tournament start at ₹349, while Premium tickets priced at ₹2,999 offer access to all four matches on a particular day, along with entry to the Festival Arena and Premium Lounge.
The Alpine APL Pipers will begin Season 4 as defending champions, with Magnus Carlsen once again leading the team. Carlsen’s presence gives the Bengaluru edition one of the biggest attractions in world chess. The Norwegian has been a central figure in the Global Chess League and will return as the Pipers look to retain their crown against an increasingly competitive field.
PBG Alaskan Knights will bring together two major Indian chess names from different generations. Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will feature alongside Arjun Erigaisi, one of India’s leading modern Grandmasters. Their presence in the same team reflects the blend of experience and new-generation talent that has become central to the league.
Ganges Grandmasters will feature Ian Nepomniachtchi and returning star Levon Aronian, while Fyers American Gambits will be led by 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov and Season 2 MVP Nihal Sarin.
The league is expected to feature a mix of established champions, elite superstars and emerging talent across the nine-day competition.
Bengaluru Set to Host Global Chess Spectacle
Season 4 marks the second consecutive year that the Global Chess League will be staged in India. The competition was held in Mumbai in 2025, following earlier editions in Dubai and London. Bengaluru will now become the latest international destination for the league. The choice of Bengaluru reflects the city’s growing importance as a centre for technology, innovation and sport.
Global Chess League Commissioner Gourav Rakshit said the tournament is designed to be experienced live. “GCL is built to be experienced live, and Bengaluru will give fans a chance to get much closer to the action,” Rakshit said. “From the rapid intensity on the boards to the Festival Arena, we want fans to feel part of every move, every shift in momentum, and every big moment of the league.”
The league’s campaign around Season 4 has placed a strong focus on fans, with its “Most Important Seat Is Empty” message inviting spectators to become part of the live experience.
The availability of Early Bird tickets at ₹349 is aimed at making the live experience accessible to a wider audience. The entry ticket provides access to one match and the Festival Arena. For fans looking to spend an entire day at the venue, the ₹2,999 Premium ticket offers access to all four matches scheduled for the day. Premium ticket holders will also have access to the Festival Arena and Premium Lounge.
The Festival Arena will extend the experience beyond the competition boards. Fans will be able to follow live screenings and commentary while participating in fan experiences. Food will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The focus is on creating a sporting event atmosphere around chess, taking the game beyond the traditional image of a silent hall and making the live experience a central part of the tournament.
The Global Chess League uses a rapid, team-based format that creates a different dynamic from traditional individual chess tournaments. Each of the six franchises fields six players. The teams feature players across Icons, Superstar Men, Superstar Women and Prodigies, with men and women competing together in the same team structure.
Every board carries equal value towards the overall team result. With six games taking place simultaneously and matches played at rapid time controls, momentum can change quickly. A single mistake on one board can alter the direction of a match, while a late turnaround elsewhere can transform the final result.
The format has helped make the league particularly suited to live audiences, where spectators can follow multiple contests and experience the shifting momentum across the match.
Indian Chess at the Centre of the Global Game
India has emerged as one of the most important countries in world chess, with a new generation of players making an impact on the international stage. Viswanathan Anand’s achievements helped establish the foundation, while younger stars have continued to take Indian chess to greater heights. BookMyShow COO for Live Entertainment and Venues Anil Makhija said the Global Chess League provides an opportunity to connect Indian fans with the sport’s biggest names.
“Global Chess League brings together some of the biggest names in chess in a format built for a live audience,” Makhija said. “Over the last decade, India has firmly established itself as a global chess powerhouse, building on Viswanathan Anand’s legacy and the rise of a new generation led by Gukesh Dommaraju.”
The Bengaluru event will provide Indian fans an opportunity to watch international stars and leading Indian Grandmasters compete in a team format on home soil.
Across September 5 to 13, six franchises will compete for the Season 4 title. With defending champions Alpine APL Pipers led by Carlsen, PBG Alaskan Knights featuring Anand and Arjun, and several other global stars across the remaining teams, the competition promises another high-profile chapter for the league.
For Bengaluru, it is an opportunity to host one of the biggest team chess competitions in the world. For fans, the action is now within reach. As the Global Chess League prepares for Season 4, the biggest names in the game are ready to take their seats at the board.
And with tickets now available, the one seat that the league says is still waiting to be claimed belongs to the fans.
