Global Chess League Season 4 trophy unveiled as Magnus…

The fourth edition of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL) is set for a star-studded opening in Bengaluru, with world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen returning to the competition after a year's absence and defending champions Alpine APL Pipers looking to retain their title.

The GCL, a joint initiative of Tech Mahindra and FIDE, unveiled its Season 4 trophy on Friday ahead of the tournament opener on Saturday. Six teams will compete in a double round-robin format over nine days, with 32 matches scheduled before the top two teams meet in the Grand Finale on September 13.

The league is being hosted in India for the second consecutive year and has once again brought together some of the biggest names in world chess. Apart from Carlsen, 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Viswanathan Anand and Ian Nepomniachtchi will lead their respective teams as icon players.

Speaking at the press conference, Peeyush Dubey, Chairman, Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, said the league was looking to establish chess as an experience that could be enjoyed by a much wider audience.

"We at the Global Chess League (GCL) have always believed that chess is a sport that a family can enjoy together. Chess can be a festival, and that is exactly the revolution that we are seeing. I am very happy to say that Season 4 is bigger and better in every single aspect than what we have seen. We have some of the best global players with us in Bangalore and some of the biggest companies in the world supporting this movement," said Dubey.

Carlsen, who played for the Pipers in the first two seasons held in Dubai and London, opted out of last year's Mumbai edition. The Pipers nevertheless went on to win the title, denying Triveni Continental Kings a third consecutive championship.

The Norwegian Grandmaster said he was looking forward to being back, while acknowledging the unusual circumstances surrounding his return.

"I am a little bit surprised to be back, seeing as we had a couple of really frustrating years for the team - the first two years when I was playing. And then when I was away, the team won it all. So this time I'm just trying to do my best to not do any worse than last year," said Carlsen.

The defending champions have strengthened their squad further. India's first-ever Women's World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh joins experienced campaigner Koneru Humpy on the women's board, while Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri and India's Vidit Gujrathi will feature on the other two men's boards.

The Pipers will face CheQ Mumba Masters in their opening match on Saturday.

The Alaskan Knights, meanwhile, will begin their campaign against FYERS American Gambits. The Knights have made a significant change to their line-up, with Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand moving across from Ganges Grandmasters, whom he represented in the first three seasons.

The 56-year-old Anand will lead one of the youngest squads in the competition, which also includes India's Arjun Erigaisi, Abhimanyu Mishra and 15-year-old Turkish Grandmaster Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus.

For Erdogmus, who will make his GCL debut, playing alongside Anand and Arjun is an opportunity he is relishing.

"It's going to be an amazing experience for me to play with Vishy and Arjun. We have a very strong team and it's my first time here. I am really excited to play here. I hope we can win the tournament," said Erdogmus.

Two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings will look to their established core as they attempt to win a third title in four years. Firouzja will lead the team on the icon board, with Wei Yi, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Zhu Jiner completing a formidable line-up.

Former women's world champion Kosteniuk said the team's previous successes had only strengthened its desire to win again.

"I am very happy and excited to once again play for Triveni Continental Kings. It is a good feeling that we have won this title twice before, but it will be even nicer to add a third one here. So that's what we are aiming for," she said.

CheQ Mumba Masters, led by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, will also be looking to turn team spirit into results after falling short in the previous three seasons.

"Yeah, in general, I am very happy with our team and the team spirit we build. We build it every season, in and out. So I think that's one of our big strengths. It hasn't materialised on the board in the last three seasons, but I'm very happy with Mumba Masters and the trust they have in me. And I hope I can help them and give back some of that trust on the chessboard as well - not only in the team spirit, but also by helping us win the whole thing," said Vachier-Lagrave.

FYERS American Gambits will be led by Sindarov, who will play on the icon board in the GCL for the first time. The 2026 Candidates winner said he enjoys the league's distinctive format and is ready for the responsibility that comes with playing on the first board.

While the quality of the field remains the league's biggest attraction, the organisers are also seeking to make the experience more engaging for spectators and viewers who may not necessarily understand chess at an advanced level.

"Our endeavour at the Global Chess League (GCL) is to really make this game come to life for audiences that may or may not understand it to the level that they need to. So we are bringing in innovations towards that particular end. Our philosophy is that chess doesn't need drama to be manufactured. It's our responsibility to bring that drama out in front for the audiences and screens," said Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner, Tech Mahindra Global Chess League.

Fans at the venue will continue to have access to live analysis on the big screen and commentary through personalised headsets. Viewers on the GCL app will be able to follow the entire match or focus on an individual board or player, while also playing along with Grandmasters and testing their own moves against the world's best.The league will also offer a closer look at the emotions inside the team dugouts, with coaches and captains being equipped with heart-rate monitors to track their stress levels during matches.

The opening day will feature three matches, beginning with PBG Alaskan Knights against FYERS American Gambits, followed by Triveni Continental Kings taking on Ganges Grandmasters and CheQ Mumba Masters facing defending champions Alpine APL Pipers.

Fans across India can watch the matches live for free on the official Tech Mahindra Global Chess League YouTube channel. The broadcast will also be available on the Chess24 YouTube and Twitch channels, as well as Chess.com India. For the first time this season, Hindi-language commentary will also be available.

With Carlsen's return, Anand's move to a new team, a new generation of young stars entering the competition and the defending champions seeking another title, Season 4 promises a compelling mix of established champions, emerging talent and high-stakes team chess.
