I-League 3 2026-27 Kicks Off with 19 Clubs, Two Promotion Spots at Stake

The fourth tier of Indian men's football begins across four venues, with clubs competing for a place in I-League 2 and live streaming available on the Indian Football YouTube channel.
The 2026-27 I-League 3 season kicked off on October 22, with 19 clubs beginning their campaigns across four venues in a competition that offers a crucial pathway towards the higher divisions of Indian football.
Organised by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the fourth tier of the men's football pyramid will feature a single round-robin group stage, followed by a six-team play-off round. With the top two finishers earning promotion to I-League 2 for the 2027-28 season, the competition provides participating clubs with a significant opportunity to advance their ambitions.
All matches will be streamed live on the Indian Football YouTube channel, giving supporters an opportunity to follow clubs from different regions and track the progress of emerging teams throughout the tournament.
The 19 participating clubs have been divided into four groups, with matches scheduled in Imphal, Rudrapur, Shillong and Mapusa. Groups A, B and C contain four or five teams, while Group D also features five clubs.
The geographical spread of the competition brings together established regional sides, academy-backed teams and clubs seeking to strengthen their positions in the national football structure.
Group A — Khuman Lampak Stadium, Imphal
TRAU FC
NEROCA FC
Southern Sporting Union
KLASA FC
The Imphal group features two familiar names in TRAU FC and NEROCA FC, alongside Southern Sporting Union and KLASA FC. With four teams competing in a single round-robin format, every fixture could have a direct bearing on the race to finish at the top of the group.
Group B — Amenity Football Academy, Rudrapur
Garhwal Heroes FC
Sher-e-Punjab SC
Corbett FC
Techtro Swades United FC
Ghaziabad City FC
Group B began its campaign on October 22. With five teams in the section, clubs will need to maintain consistency across their fixtures to secure a place among the group winners or the best second-placed sides.
Group C — SSA Stadium, Shillong
Kuppuraj FC
Lakecity FC
Nongkseh SS&CC
Godavari FC
Chhaygaon FC
Group C also started on October 22. The Shillong venue will host a five-team contest in which every point could prove important as clubs attempt to progress to the next stage.
Group D — Duler Stadium, Mapusa
Kickstart FC
RT Boys FC
GOG FCC
Zinc Football Academy
Clube de Salgaocar
Group D begins its campaign on November 1. The five participating teams will have the task of building momentum once their fixtures get underway, with the group stage running until November 9.
Six teams to advance to the play-offs
The tournament's format places considerable importance on finishing positions during the preliminary round. The four group winners will qualify automatically for the six-team play-offs. They will be joined by the two best second-placed teams across the four groups.
This structure keeps the competition open beyond the fight for first place in each group. Teams that finish second will retain a chance of progressing, although their qualification will depend on how their points and other relevant standings compare with those of the runners-up elsewhere.
With the group stage operating on a single round-robin basis, there will be limited opportunities to recover from dropped points. Clubs will need to balance attacking ambition with defensive organisation, particularly in matches against direct rivals for qualification.
The six play-off teams will then compete for the two promotion places available for the 2027-28 I-League 2 season.
For clubs competing in the fourth tier, promotion represents more than a change in league status. It offers an opportunity to progress within the national football pyramid and compete at a higher level of the domestic game.
The two available places make the play-offs the decisive phase of the season. Reaching that stage will be the immediate objective for all 19 clubs, but the ultimate challenge will be converting qualification into a top-two finish.
The participation of teams from different regions also gives the competition wider significance. Clubs from the Northeast, northern India, western India and other football centres will have the opportunity to demonstrate their competitiveness in a national tournament.
For developing teams, a successful campaign could provide momentum for future seasons, while promotion would bring the demands and opportunities associated with I-League 2.
The AIFF's decision to stream all matches on the Indian Football YouTube channel will make the tournament accessible to supporters who cannot attend games at the four host venues.
Digital coverage is particularly relevant for lower-division competitions, where clubs often have limited opportunities to reach a national audience. Regular live streaming can help supporters follow their teams, improve the visibility of participating players and create a more accessible record of the competition.
The broadcast initiative also provides a central destination for fans tracking the group standings and the developing promotion race.
The road to I-League 2 begins.
With the group stage running from October 22 to November 9, the 2026-27 I-League 3 season will be a short but consequential test for all 19 clubs. Groups B and C have already begun their campaigns, Group A starts on October 26, and Group D follows on November 1. As the tournament progresses, the focus will shift towards securing group wins, claiming the two best runner-up positions and preparing for the play-offs.
Only two clubs can secure promotion to I-League 2. For the teams involved, the objective is clear: make the most of the group stage and keep the opportunity of moving up the Indian football pyramid alive.
The competition has begun, and the race for promotion is officially underway.
