IFL 2025-26: Sreenidi Deccan, Shillong Lajong Share Spoils as Title Race Tilts in Diamond Harbour’s Favour

Sreenidi Deccan FC and Shillong Lajong FC played out a 1-1 draw in a crucial championship phase fixture of the Star Cement IFL 2025–26 at the Deccan Arena in Hyderabad, a result that could prove decisive in the context of the title race.
With both sides locked on 22 points and just two matches remaining, the dropped points have significantly strengthened Diamond Harbour’s position at the top. Currently on 28 points, Diamond Harbour now need just a single point from their next match against Dempo SC to secure the title, leaving both Sreenidi and Lajong with little margin for error.
The match began with urgency from the hosts, who capitalised on early pressure to take the lead inside the opening ten minutes. A delivery from the left flank initially appeared to be cleared by Shillong defender Rudra Ved, but the ball fell to Lalromawia on the right. Reacting quickly, he recycled the ball into the penalty area, where David Castañeda produced an acrobatic finish to beat the goalkeeper.
The goal, Castañeda’s third of the championship phase, reflected Sreenidi’s attacking intent and ability to exploit second balls in dangerous areas. Lalromawia, in particular, was influential in the early stages, using his pace and direct running to stretch the Lajong defence and create openings. Shillong Lajong, however, remained composed despite conceding early. While they struggled to create clear chances in the opening half hour, they gradually grew into the game by asserting control in midfield. Their possession-based approach allowed them to dictate the tempo, though it did not immediately translate into opportunities.
Sreenidi, aware of the stakes, adopted a more cautious approach after taking the lead. They dropped deeper, committing numbers behind the ball and focusing on maintaining defensive shape. This limited Lajong’s attacking space but also reduced the hosts’ own attacking output. One of the few chances for Shillong in the first half came from a free-kick by Figo Syndai, which was comfortably dealt with by the goalkeeper. At the other end, Fabrice Kah tested Ranit Sarkar with a powerful effort from distance, but the Lajong goalkeeper responded with a strong save to keep his side in the contest.
As the first half drew to a close, Shillong Lajong had begun to dominate possession, but Sreenidi’s defensive organisation ensured they went into the break with their one-goal advantage intact.
The second half saw a noticeable tactical shift from the visitors. Lajong moved towards a more fluid attacking style, focusing on short passing combinations and quicker ball movement to unsettle Sreenidi’s defensive structure. The change in approach paid dividends just before the hour mark. Everbrightson Sana initiated the move by dropping deep to collect possession and threading a well-weighted pass into the path of Phrangki Buam. As Buam attempted to control the ball, he was brought down inside the box by Lalthankhuma, resulting in a penalty. Buam stepped up and converted calmly, bringing Shillong Lajong level at 1-1.
The equaliser shifted momentum in favour of the visitors. Lajong began to push forward with greater confidence, creating more threatening situations in the final third. Their improved ball movement and positioning forced Sreenidi onto the defensive for extended periods. One of Lajong’s best chances came from a well-executed set-piece. A cross from Kitboklang Khyriem found Kenstar Kharshong, who controlled the ball inside the box and struck towards goal, only to be denied by an excellent save from Kamaljit Singh.
As the match entered its final stages, both teams recognised the importance of securing all three points. The game opened up, with end-to-end action replacing the earlier tactical restraint. In stoppage time, Sreenidi came close to regaining the lead when Hadi Idrissou headed a corner towards the bottom corner, but Ranit Sarkar produced a crucial save to keep the scores level. Moments later, Shillong substitute Jakob Vanlalhimpuia broke through on goal, only to be denied by Kamaljit Singh in a one-on-one situation.
The intensity continued as Sreenidi launched a quick counter-attack, with Paulo Cezar finding himself in a promising position. However, a timely defensive block prevented what could have been a decisive goal. Despite the flurry of late chances, neither side was able to find a winner. The final whistle confirmed a draw an outcome that, while reflecting the balance of the contest, leaves both teams at a disadvantage in the title race.
From a tactical perspective, the match highlighted contrasting approaches. Sreenidi’s early aggression and defensive solidity were countered by Shillong’s possession-based play and second-half adjustments. Both teams had phases of control but lacked the finishing edge required to secure victory.
With just two matches remaining, the implications of this result are clear. Diamond Harbour now hold a commanding advantage, while Sreenidi Deccan and Shillong Lajong must rely on a combination of results and performances to keep their title hopes alive.
In Hyderabad, the contest delivered intensity, tactical nuance, and late drama but ultimately, it was the dropped points that may define the outcome of the season.
