Crislan Da Silva delivered a dramatic finish to Gokulam Kerala FC's Indian Football League (IFL) 2026-27 campaign opener, scoring in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over debutants Samaleswari SC at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode on Saturday.

The two-time champions appeared firmly in control after taking a 2-0 first-half lead through Crislan and Makan Chothe. However, Samaleswari produced an impressive second-half fightback, benefiting from a Mohammed Rafi own goal before Jorge Pereyra Diaz converted a 90th-minute penalty to make it 2-2. Just when the visitors looked set to earn a memorable point on their league debut, Crislan rose to head home the winner and complete his brace.

The result gave Gokulam all three points, but the manner of the victory highlighted how quickly the contest had changed after half-time.

Playing in front of their home supporters, Gokulam began with attacking intent, looking to stretch Samaleswari through the wide areas. Chothe's runs behind the defence kept the visitors occupied, although the debutants created the first clear opportunity.

In the sixth minute, Sahil Harijan beat his marker on the left and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Pereyra Diaz arrived to meet it, but his attempt flashed narrowly wide. Ishan Pandita also came close five minutes later, finding space on the edge of the box before sending his effort just off target.

Gokulam gradually absorbed the visitors' high press and began to take control. Their breakthrough arrived in the 16th minute through a combination between their Brazilian attackers. Victor Da Silva played an incisive pass into Crislan's path, and the forward timed his run perfectly before firing past goalkeeper Aaryan Anjaneya.

Samaleswari attempted to respond and nearly found an equaliser in the 22nd minute. Roshan Panna raced through after a ball over the top, but Gokulam goalkeeper Shibin Raj came off his line bravely to smother the danger. Three minutes later, Gokulam doubled their advantage. Naresh Singh delivered a cross from the right, Victor met it and laid the ball into Chothe's path. The winger made no mistake from close range, slotting past Aaryan to make it 2-0.

The hosts continued to combine effectively, particularly through Victor and Crislan, whose understanding between the lines repeatedly troubled the Samaleswari defence. Victor had an opportunity to add a third in first-half stoppage time, but his free-kick sailed over the crossbar. Gokulam went into the interval with a deserved two-goal cushion.

Samaleswari fight their way back

The second half began with frequent stoppages and free-kicks disrupting the flow. Samaleswari, however, gradually increased their attacking intensity and began spending more time in the final third. In the 58th minute, a sequence of quick passes created space for Sahil to shoot from outside the box, although his effort drifted wide. Four minutes later, Pereyra Diaz used his strength to hold off two defenders inside the penalty area before sending a powerful low shot towards the near post. Shibin reacted quickly to make the save.

The visitors' persistence was rewarded in the 75th minute, albeit through an unfortunate moment for Gokulam. A long throw was delivered into the penalty area, and substitute Mohammed Rafi, attempting to clear the danger, sliced the ball into his own net. The goal reduced the deficit to 1-2 and gave Samaleswari renewed belief.

Pereyra Diaz came close to equalising in the 80th minute with a curling effort after cutting in from the left. Shibin produced an excellent full-stretch save but collided with the post in the process and could not continue. Ravi Kumar came on as his replacement.

The substitute goalkeeper was immediately tested. In the 84th minute, a cleared corner fell to Fredy Chawngthansanga on the edge of the box, whose first-time strike forced Ravi into a sharp save.

Samaleswari's pressure finally produced an equaliser in the 90th minute. The referee awarded a penalty after Rafi handled Pereyra Diaz's header inside the box. The Argentinian took responsibility from the spot and converted, bringing the score to 2-2.

For Gokulam, the prospect of surrendering a two-goal lead at home had become a genuine concern. But the hosts found one final attacking moment deep into added time. Seven minutes into stoppage time, Sachu Siby floated a cross into the penalty area. Crislan rose above the defence and directed a header past the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 3-2. His second goal of the evening secured a dramatic victory and ensured that Gokulam's opening-day celebrations would not be spoiled.

The contest showcased two contrasting halves. Gokulam's attacking combinations and clinical finishing gave them control before the break, while Samaleswari's determination and improved attacking play brought them back into the match. Ultimately, Crislan's late intervention separated the sides.

The result gives the two-time champions a winning start, although they will have defensive aspects to review after allowing a 2-0 advantage to disappear. For Samaleswari, the defeat will be difficult to accept, but their second-half response offered encouragement on their debut in the competition.

Gokulam Kerala will travel to Jaipur to face Rajasthan United FC at the Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium on November 7. Samaleswari will return home to host Dempo SC at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Ranchi on November 5.
