Punjab FC will look to extend their unbeaten start to the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 season when they travel to Kolkata to face Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday, October 31.

With kick-off scheduled for 7:30 PM, the encounter presents a significant test for the Shers against one of the strongest teams in Indian football.

Punjab FC have made an encouraging start to the campaign, collecting seven points from their opening three matches to occupy second place in the standings. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, are fifth with six points from an identical number of fixtures. A victory would allow Punjab to strengthen their position near the top of the table, while the hosts will be eager to close the gap and establish themselves as genuine title contenders.

Punjab FC head into the contest on the back of a dramatic 3-2 victory against Churchill Brothers SC in Goa. Sanathoi Singh emerged as the match-winner, finding the net in the 95th minute to secure all three points for his side.

Interestingly, late goals have become a defining feature of Punjab's campaign. All three of their matches so far have witnessed decisive moments in the closing stages.

Raphaël Messi Bouli scored the winner against Odisha FC in their season opener, while Gurkirat Singh rescued a point against Mumbai City FC with a late equaliser. Sanathoi then continued the trend against Churchill Brothers.

Head coach Pavlos Dermitzakis deserves credit for the manner in which he has utilised his squad. His substitutions have provided fresh attacking impetus at crucial moments, allowing Punjab to maintain intensity and stretch opposition defences towards the end of matches.

However, relying on late interventions against a side of Mohun Bagan's quality could prove dangerous. Punjab will need to combine their attacking ambition with greater control across the 90 minutes.

Mohun Bagan present a formidable challenge

Mohun Bagan enter the fixture following a narrow 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC, with Manvir Singh scoring the decisive goal in the 85th minute. Despite sitting fifth, the Kolkata outfit have demonstrated their ability to grind out results. Playing at home, they will also enjoy the backing of their supporters at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.

The historical numbers favour the hosts. Punjab FC have never defeated Mohun Bagan in the ISL, with the Kolkata club winning all their previous encounters. The two sides also met in the semi-finals of the IFA Shield earlier, where Mohun Bagan progressed after a penalty shootout following a goalless 120 minutes. For Punjab, Saturday represents an opportunity to challenge that historical dominance and register a significant result against one of the league's established heavyweights.

The fixture will also bring together two Greek coaches with an existing connection.

Dermitzakis will face his compatriot Panagiotis Dilimperis, who previously managed Punjab FC for two seasons before taking charge of Mohun Bagan.

The familiarity between the two coaches could make the tactical battle particularly interesting. Dilimperis understands Punjab's structure and several of the players in their squad, while Dermitzakis will be keen to demonstrate how far his team has progressed under his leadership.

Dermitzakis has acknowledged the quality of his opponent while maintaining that his focus remains firmly on securing a positive result. The Punjab coach has also stressed the importance of approaching the contest with the same competitive mindset that has defined his team's opening performances.

While Punjab's attacking performances have delivered results, their defensive organisation remains an area of concern. The Shers have conceded four goals across their opening three matches, and Dermitzakis is aware that such lapses could be punished against a team with Mohun Bagan's attacking quality.

The coach has indicated that defensive improvements have been a major focus during training, particularly after the mistakes witnessed in the previous fixtures. Captain Nikhil Prabhu, who has returned to playing as a centre-back this season, has also acknowledged the need to eliminate individual errors.

Prabhu explained that he has worked with the coaching staff to analyse and correct mistakes from the Churchill Brothers encounter. Having started his career as a centre-back before moving into defensive midfield, the captain has embraced his responsibility in the backline.

His versatility could prove valuable against Mohun Bagan, particularly when Punjab need to maintain defensive discipline while building attacks from the back.

Another important factor in Punjab's impressive start has been the contribution of players coming off the bench. Captain Prabhu has highlighted how the coaching staff have emphasised collective responsibility, with substitutes playing an equally important role as the starting eleven.

The experienced members of the squad have also taken responsibility for helping younger players develop, creating a competitive environment within the team. That depth could become particularly important against Mohun Bagan, where the intensity and quality of the opposition may demand tactical adjustments during the second half.

For Punjab FC, Saturday's encounter is more than another league fixture. It is an opportunity to demonstrate that their unbeaten start is not merely an encouraging beginning but a reflection of their ability to compete against the strongest teams in the country.

Dermitzakis has brought tactical flexibility and late-match resilience to the side, but the challenge against Mohun Bagan will require greater defensive discipline and consistency. The hosts have history on their side, along with home advantage and the experience of their previous encounters. Punjab, however, arrive with confidence, momentum and seven points from three matches.

A victory in Kolkata would be a significant statement of intent from the Shers and could further strengthen their position among the early contenders in the ISL 2026-27 season.
