Mohammedan SC Face Shillong Lajong as Gokulam Kerala Host Debutants Samaleswari in IFL Double-Header

The Indian Football League (IFL) 2026-27 season continues on Saturday, October 31, with two intriguing fixtures featuring clubs with contrasting ambitions and storylines.
Former champions Mohammedan SC begin their campaign against last season's runners-up Shillong Lajong FC, while two-time champions Gokulam Kerala FC welcome debutants Samaleswari SC in Kozhikode.
The double-header will see Mohammedan and Shillong Lajong meet at the Kalyani Football Stadium at 4 PM IST, followed by Gokulam Kerala's encounter against Samaleswari at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode at 6:30 PM IST.
Both matches will be broadcast live on DD Sports and streamed on the Unite8 YouTube Channel, Zee5 and WAVES App.
Mohammedan SC return to the competition after winning the 2023-24 I-League title and earning promotion. The Kolkata-based club will be looking to make an immediate impression as they begin another campaign with familiar faces and an emphasis on continuity.
Head coach Saheed Ramon, who previously managed the club during the 2019-20 season, returns to the dugout with a squad that has largely retained its understanding and chemistry. Captain Mahitosh Roy, Fardin Ali Molla, Israfil Dewan and Hira Mondal are among the players who have featured together in the Calcutta Football League this season.
That familiarity could prove important, particularly given the relatively short preparation period before the start of the competition.
Mohammedan's assistant coach Sudhir Mishra has indicated that the team's immediate objective is to begin with three points, while captain Roy believes the existing understanding within the squad will help overcome the challenges of the pre-season break.
However, their opening opponents present a formidable challenge.
Shillong Lajong finished runners-up in the previous edition with 28 points, just one behind champions Diamond Harbour FC. Under head coach Birendra Thapa, the Meghalaya-based club achieved an impressive campaign with an entirely Indian squad.
Lajong finished the previous season with a statement 3-0 victory over Diamond Harbour, demonstrating their ability to compete against the strongest teams in the division.
Phrangki Buam was one of the standout performers, scoring eight goals and earning the league's Most Valuable Player award. He will once again be central to their attacking plans, alongside Everbrightson Sana, who also found the net in the victory over Diamond Harbour.
The club have further strengthened their squad with Brazilian defender Arthur Pangaro and fellow Brazilian Jota. Both featured in the Durand Cup, adding international experience to an otherwise familiar core.
Thapa has expressed confidence in his team's preparation and is targeting all three points against Mohammedan. The coach also recognises the quality of the opposition, particularly the experience within their Indian contingent.
For Shillong Lajong, Saturday offers an opportunity to establish themselves as genuine contenders once again. For Mohammedan, it is a chance to make a winning return to a competition they previously conquered.
Gokulam Kerala begin new chapter against Samaleswari SC
The second fixture brings together two clubs with very different recent experiences. Gokulam Kerala FC enter the new season looking to put behind them a difficult 2025-26 campaign. The Malabarians finished ninth in the league phase with just two victories from nine matches and subsequently found themselves fighting for survival in the relegation round.
Their campaign ultimately went down to the final fixture on May 12. Gokulam entered the match against Namdhari SC at the bottom of the relegation group, one point behind their opponents, who needed only a draw to retain their position.
With the contest approaching its conclusion, Trijoy Savio Dias scored in the eighth minute of added time to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory. The result ensured Gokulam remained in the league while sending Namdhari into relegation.
The club have responded with significant changes ahead of the new campaign. Brazilian coach Carlos Eduardo Parreira, appointed in July, takes charge of a reshaped squad after working in Brazil, Thailand and Indonesia and with Brazil's youth national teams.
Among the notable additions is Brazilian forward Crislan, who brings considerable experience with 73 goals in 294 career appearances across six countries. Ghanaian striker Denny Antwi also returns to Kozhikode, where he previously scored 11 goals in 15 league matches during Gokulam's 2020-21 title-winning season.
Midfielder Lalchungnunga Chhangte has also joined from Sreenidi Deccan FC. Parreira has emphasised the importance of securing three points in the opening fixture, particularly with five consecutive away matches scheduled immediately afterwards. The coach has also made clear that Gokulam's ambition is to challenge for the league title.
Standing in Gokulam's way are newcomers Samaleswari SC, who will make their first-ever appearance in the Indian Football League. Founded in Sambalpur, Odisha, in 2006, the club's entry into the competition represents an important milestone for football in the state.
Head coach Abdul Azim Siddique has overseen an encouraging pre-season and revealed that 10 players in his squad are from Odisha, underlining the club's commitment to regional representation. Samaleswari are not entirely unfamiliar with facing established opposition. During their debut Durand Cup campaign, they defeated Mohammedan SC 3-2 in Kolkata on August 2. Captain Basit Ahmed Bhat opened the scoring with a near-post finish from a corner in that encounter.
That result demonstrated their ability to compete against established clubs, although the challenge against Gokulam will be different.
The Kerala side possess considerable experience, international players and the advantage of playing at home. Samaleswari will need to maintain their defensive organisation while looking for opportunities to exploit spaces in the opposition half.
The club will play its home fixtures at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Rourkela this season, giving Odisha football supporters an opportunity to follow their maiden IFL campaign. Siddique has also welcomed the prospect of a strong crowd in Kozhikode, expressing hope that members of the Odia community living in Kerala will turn up to support the debutants.
Saturday's double-header offers an interesting snapshot of the IFL 2026-27 season. Mohammedan SC and Shillong Lajong will look to establish early momentum, with both clubs carrying expectations based on their previous achievements. Gokulam Kerala, meanwhile, begin a new chapter under Parreira after narrowly escaping relegation last season.
For Samaleswari, the occasion is historic in itself. Their first league appearance marks a significant step for the club and Odisha football. With a former champion returning, last season's runners-up seeking another strong campaign, two-time champions looking to rebuild and a debutant eager to make an impression, Saturday promises an engaging start to the weekend's IFL action.
