India's U-23 men's boxing contingent continued the country's impressive campaign at the Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing Championships by assuring six medals after a series of commanding performances in the quarterfinals on Friday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Indian boxers produced an impressive display across multiple weight categories, with Asian champion Vishvanath (50kg), Ganga (55kg), Vanshaj (65kg), and Hitesh (70kg) all registering convincing victories. Their wins, coupled with the previously confirmed semifinal berths of Neeraj (75kg) and Ishan Kataria (+90kg), have guaranteed India six podium finishes in the U-23 men's competition.

While Aryan Malik, Rocky Chaudhary, and Hemant Sangwan bowed out after battling hard in their respective quarterfinals, India's overall performance highlighted the depth and consistency of its emerging male boxers at the continental level.

Leading India's charge was reigning Asian champion Vishvanath, who once again demonstrated why he remains one of the favourites in the 50kg category. Facing Saudi Arabia's Ibrahim Aljohani, the Indian boxer controlled the contest from the opening bell with superior movement, accurate combinations, and excellent defensive awareness. Vishvanath consistently outboxed his opponent over all three rounds, leaving little doubt in the judges' minds as he secured a comprehensive 5-0 unanimous decision to advance to the semifinals.

The victory extended his impressive run in Jakarta and reaffirmed his status as one of India's strongest medal prospects.

India's success continued in the 55kg division through Ganga, who delivered another polished performance against Vietnam's Quang Loc Tran. Using sharp footwork and quick combinations, Ganga dictated the pace of the contest from the outset. His ability to control distance and land clean scoring punches ensured he remained comfortably ahead throughout the bout.

The judges unanimously awarded him a 5-0 victory, sending him into the last four and guaranteeing another medal for India. The convincing nature of the win reflected the confidence and maturity Ganga has displayed throughout the championships.

The 65kg quarterfinal proved to be one of India's more competitive contests of the day. Vanshaj faced Kazakhstan's Assylkhan Kosherbay in a technically demanding bout that required patience and tactical discipline. Both boxers enjoyed periods of success, but Vanshaj consistently landed the cleaner punches during the decisive exchanges. His effective counter-attacking and disciplined defence allowed him to gradually build an advantage over the three rounds.

The judges rewarded his performance with a 4-1 decision, securing India's third semifinal place of the day. The victory also highlighted Vanshaj's ability to remain composed under pressure against quality opposition.

One of the standout performances of the quarterfinal session came from Hitesh in the 70kg category. Taking on Indonesia's Radiyansyah in front of the home crowd, the Indian boxer wasted little time asserting his dominance. From the opening exchanges, Hitesh overwhelmed his opponent with aggressive attacks and powerful combinations, forcing the referee to stop the contest in the first round.

The emphatic Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) victory not only secured his semifinal berth but also sent a strong message to the remaining contenders in the weight category. Winning without being extended also allows Hitesh to conserve energy ahead of the crucial medal rounds.

While India celebrated several victories, three boxers saw their campaigns come to an end in closely contested quarterfinals. In the 80kg category, Aryan Malik produced a determined performance but eventually lost via a 4-1 decision after facing a technically superior opponent. Similarly, Rocky Chaudhary fought hard in the 85kg division but was defeated through a 4-0 decision, narrowly missing out on a semifinal place.

Meanwhile, Hemant Sangwan faced one of the toughest assignments of the day against Uzbekistan's Samir Sobirov in the 90kg category. Despite showing resilience throughout the bout, Hemant was unable to overcome the experienced Uzbek and lost by a 5-0 unanimous decision.

Although their campaigns ended in the quarterfinals, all three boxers gained valuable experience competing against some of Asia's strongest talent.

Six Indian Semifinalists Confirmed

Following Friday's results, India has officially assured six medals in the U-23 men's competition.

The Indian boxers advancing to the semifinals are:

  • Vishvanath (50kg)

  • Ganga (55kg)

  • Vanshaj (65kg)

  • Hitesh (70kg)

  • Neeraj (75kg)

  • Ishan Kataria (+90kg)

With every semifinalist guaranteed at least a bronze medal, India now has multiple opportunities to convert podium finishes into continental titles.

The performances in Jakarta underline the continued growth of India's boxing programme across both the men's and women's categories. The Boxing Federation of India's investment in age-group competitions, high-performance training, and international exposure is increasingly producing athletes capable of competing consistently against Asia's traditional boxing powerhouses.

Success across multiple weight divisions also reflects the depth of talent emerging within the system rather than dependence on a handful of elite boxers. With both the U-19 and U-23 squads producing impressive results throughout the championships, India's future in international boxing appears increasingly promising.

The Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing Championships, being held in Jakarta from July 5 to July 16, now move into the medal rounds, where India's six semifinalists will aim to secure places in the finals. Having already guaranteed six medals, the next objective is to maximise the gold medal tally. With Vishvanath, Ganga, Vanshaj, Hitesh, Neeraj, and Ishan Kataria all displaying impressive form, India will head into the semifinals with confidence and genuine hopes of producing multiple champions.

Their performances so far have already established India as one of the strongest teams at the championships, and the coming rounds present an opportunity to further underline the country's growing stature in Asian boxing.
