India Assures Six U-19 Men's Medals at Asian Boxing Championships as Young Boxers Shine in Jakarta

India's impressive campaign at the Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing Championships 2026 continued on Saturday as the country's young boxers guaranteed six medals in the U-19 men's competition following a series of commanding quarterfinal victories in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Indian contingent once again showcased its growing strength across multiple weight categories, with Aditya (55kg), Sikander (60kg), Mausam Suhag (65kg), Devender Choudhary (75kg), Sagar (85kg), and Shubham Rajput (90kg) all advancing to the semifinals. Under the tournament rules, every semifinalist is assured of at least a bronze medal, ensuring another successful outing for India's flourishing youth boxing programme.
The performances add to India's already impressive medal haul in the U-19 and U-23 categories and underline the country's continued emergence as one of Asia's strongest boxing nations at the junior level.
India's medal charge was spearheaded by Aditya in the 55kg category, who delivered one of the most dominant performances of the day. Facing the Philippines' Baruis Ephraim John, Aditya controlled the contest from the opening bell, displaying excellent footwork, accurate combinations, and superior ring awareness to secure a comprehensive 5:0 unanimous decision.
The convincing victory highlighted the Indian youngster's technical maturity and booked his place in the semifinals, guaranteeing the country its first medal in the U-19 men's division.
In the 60kg division, Sikander produced another assured display against Sharifkhon Nuraliev of Tajikistan. Although the bout proved more competitive than Aditya's contest, Sikander maintained control through disciplined boxing and effective counter-attacking to register a 4:1 victory on the judges' scorecards. The win reflected both composure and tactical intelligence, qualities that will serve him well as the competition enters its decisive stages.
India's success continued in the 65kg category, where Mausam Suhag progressed to the semifinals to secure another guaranteed medal for the country. His qualification further demonstrated India's depth across the weight divisions, with multiple boxers now within touching distance of competing for gold medals later in the championship. Having negotiated the quarterfinal hurdle successfully, Mausam now has the opportunity to challenge for a place in the final and strengthen India's medal tally further.
Among the standout performers of the day was Devender Choudhary, who produced an outstanding display in the 75kg division. Taking on Indonesia's Muhammad Rayhan Athaillah, Devender was in complete control throughout the contest, combining aggressive pressure with precise punching to claim a 5:0 unanimous decision. His convincing victory highlighted the growing confidence within India's youth boxing squad and reinforced his credentials as one of the country's strongest medal prospects in Jakarta.
India's heavyweights also enjoyed an exceptional day, with both Sagar and Shubham Rajput recording stoppage victories. Competing in the 85kg category, Sagar overwhelmed Indonesia's Irnanda Firmanda, forcing the referee to stop the contest in the second round after a dominant display. Shortly afterwards, Shubham Rajput delivered an equally impressive performance in the 90kg division, defeating Indonesia's Nouval Nouval via Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) in the very first round.
The early stoppages reflected the power and technical superiority displayed by both Indian boxers, who now move into the semifinals with growing confidence.
Despite the successful overall day, India also experienced a few narrow disappointments. In the 50kg category, Ambekar Meitei Lairenlakp fought a closely contested bout against Japan's Kotaro Nishizaki but eventually suffered a heartbreaking 3:2 split-decision defeat. The result could easily have gone either way, highlighting the fine margins that often separate victory and defeat at elite international competitions.
Meanwhile, Lokesh exited the tournament after losing 3:1 to Kazakhstan's Timur Taibekov in the 80kg division. In the super-heavyweight +90kg category, Loven Gulia saw his campaign come to an end following an RSC defeat in the second round against Kazakhstan's Vladislav Samozhonov.
While these defeats prevented India from adding further guaranteed medals, each boxer gained valuable international experience that will aid their long-term development.
The latest results once again underline the remarkable progress being made by Indian boxing at the junior level. Across both the U-19 and U-23 competitions, Indian boxers have consistently reached the medal rounds, demonstrating impressive depth across nearly every weight category. The Boxing Federation of India's emphasis on structured grassroots development, international exposure, and scientific training continues to produce athletes capable of competing with Asia's best.
The performances in Jakarta also suggest that India's pipeline of future senior international boxers remains exceptionally strong.
With six U-19 men's boxers now through to the semifinals, India's focus will shift from securing medals to converting those guaranteed podium finishes into gold medals. Aditya, Sikander, Mausam Suhag, Devender Choudhary, Sagar, and Shubham Rajput will each have the opportunity to book places in their respective finals over the coming days.
As the Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing Championships, being held from July 5 to July 16 in Jakarta, move towards their concluding stages, India continues to establish itself as one of the tournament's standout nations. With six assured medals in the U-19 men's category added to the country's growing tally across other divisions, the future of Indian boxing looks increasingly bright.
