India Beat Netherlands 3-2 in FIH Pro League 2026 as Jugraj, Abhishek and Rajinder Seal Thrilling Win

The Indian men’s hockey team produced a spirited display to edge past hosts Netherlands 3-2 in a pulsating FIH Pro League encounter in Rotterdam on Sunday.
Goals from Jugraj Singh, Abhishek and Rajinder Singh ensured India signed off from the Rotterdam leg with a memorable victory, overcoming one of the world’s strongest sides in front of their home crowd.
Led by stand-in captain Hardik Singh, who was later named Player of the Match, India combined disciplined defending with clinical finishing to register their second outright win against the Dutch during the European leg of the tournament.
The opening quarter belonged largely to the Netherlands, who controlled possession and moved the ball sharply across the field. Their intricate passing game put the Indian defence under sustained pressure, forcing the visitors to remain compact and organised. India initially struggled to establish rhythm but gradually settled into the contest. The defensive unit absorbed repeated Dutch attacks, while the midfield began finding pockets of space to launch counter-attacks. Although India entered the Dutch circle on a few occasions, the final pass eluded them, resulting in a goalless first quarter.
The breakthrough came early in the second quarter when India earned their first penalty corner of the match. Drag-flick specialist Jugraj Singh stepped up and powered his effort past goalkeeper Derk Meijer in the 18th minute to hand India a deserved 1-0 lead. However, the advantage lasted barely a minute. The Netherlands responded immediately through their own penalty corner, with Pepijn van der Heijden converting in the 19th minute to restore parity and keep the contest finely balanced.
Despite the setback, India maintained composure and continued to press forward. Their persistence paid off in the 27th minute when Jarmanpreet Singh delivered an excellent pass into the circle. Abhishek controlled the ball brilliantly before unleashing a powerful backhand strike into the net, restoring India’s lead at 2-1 before the halftime break.
The second half witnessed the Netherlands dominate possession as they searched for another equaliser. India, however, remained tactically disciplined, focusing on structured defending and quick transitions whenever opportunities arose. A crucial moment came in the 41st minute when the Dutch earned another penalty corner. Amit Rohidas made an important defensive intervention to deny van der Heijden’s drag-flick, while another promising penalty corner opportunity for the hosts broke down due to an error in the injection routine.
These defensive efforts ensured India carried their slender 2-1 advantage into the final quarter despite mounting pressure from the home side.
As the match entered its closing stages, the Netherlands pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but India capitalised on the spaces left behind. In the 56th minute, Dilpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh combined on a rapid counter-attack that created a dangerous two-on-one opportunity. Dutch defender Joppe Wolbert made a desperate intervention but was shown a yellow card after committing a foul during the play.
India made full use of the resulting penalty corner. Rajinder Singh stepped up and fired a precise drag-flick into the goal, extending India’s lead to 3-1 and putting the visitors in firm control.
Reduced to ten players temporarily, the Netherlands still refused to give up. They earned three consecutive penalty corners in the 58th minute, but India’s penalty corner defence stood tall, producing multiple blocks to preserve the two-goal cushion. The hosts eventually found a breakthrough in the 59th minute through a well-worked penalty corner variation finished by Koen Bijen, narrowing the deficit to 3-2 and setting up a tense finish.
India even earned a penalty corner in the final ten seconds, though it was blocked before the final whistle confirmed a hard-fought victory for the visitors.
The result highlights India’s growing confidence against elite opposition and showcases the squad’s balance between experienced campaigners and emerging talent. Hardik Singh’s leadership in midfield, Jugraj Singh’s reliability from penalty corners, Abhishek’s attacking instinct and Rajinder Singh’s decisive late goal all played vital roles in securing the win.
Perhaps most encouraging for the Indian coaching staff was the team’s defensive resilience under pressure. Facing repeated Dutch attacks and numerous penalty corners, India remained composed and executed their plans effectively to protect the lead.
The 3-2 triumph not only concludes the Rotterdam leg on a high note but also provides valuable momentum as India continue their FIH Pro League campaign against some of the world’s best teams.
