Mandeep Singh scores a hat-trick as Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and Hardik Singh strike twice each, while international hockey makes a celebratory return to Punjab in Jalandhar.

India launched their title defence at the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 in emphatic fashion, crushing Bangladesh 13-0 at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on Tuesday. Mandeep Singh led the scoring with a hat-trick, while captain Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and Hardik Singh scored twice each in a commanding opening performance.

Shilanand Lakra, Abhishek, Nilakanta Sharma and Jugraj Singh were the other goalscorers as India established an early advantage in the six-team competition. The result gave the defending champions three points and a goal difference of +13, placing them at the top of the standings after the opening day.

The match also carried an emotional significance for Indian hockey. Midfielder Nilakanta Sharma announced that the tournament would be his final assignment in the India jersey, bringing an illustrious international career towards its conclusion on a night of celebration in Punjab.

India wasted little time asserting their authority. Harmanpreet opened the scoring in the second minute, converting a penalty corner with his trademark drag-flick. A minute later, Mandeep doubled the lead after collecting Harmanpreet’s pass at the top of the circle and finishing with a reverse-hit.

Bangladesh had an opportunity to respond in the fourth minute, but Lakra cleared the danger. India continued to dictate the contest, using quick passing and movement to create openings in the opposition defence.

Mandeep scored his second goal in the 10th minute. Harmanpreet’s aerial ball found Abhishek, who played it into the circle, allowing Mandeep to finish from close range.

Lakra added India’s fourth goal in the 15th minute following a coordinated move involving Sukhjeet Singh and Aditya Arjun Lalage. The opening quarter ended with India firmly in control, having converted their attacking pressure into a four-goal advantage.

Nilakanta Sharma Scores in His Final Tournament

India maintained their attacking momentum in the second quarter, with Abhishek extending the lead to 5-0 in the 18th minute. Receiving a pass from Mandeep on the left, he found space inside the circle and finished to continue the hosts’ scoring run.

Nilakanta then added another goal in the 26th minute, beating the goalkeeper with a reverse-stick shot from the top of the circle. Bangladesh goalkeeper Ashraful Shad had earlier produced a fine save to deny the midfielder, but Nilakanta eventually found the net.

India went into half-time with a comfortable 6-0 lead, having scored in both quarters and restricted Bangladesh’s opportunities to respond.

Nilakanta’s goal added a personal dimension to the evening. The midfielder had announced his retirement from international hockey earlier in the day, making his appearance in Jalandhar part of his farewell campaign. Having represented India at the Tokyo Olympics and won two consecutive Asian Games gold medals, he was beginning his final tournament with a goal in a comprehensive team victory.

Bangladesh managed to retain possession for longer periods during the third quarter, but India continued to create dangerous opportunities. The defending champions increased their advantage with three goals in a rapid burst.

Dilpreet converted a penalty corner in the 43rd minute before scoring again from open play a minute later. Harmanpreet then converted another penalty corner in the 44th minute, taking India’s lead to 9-0. The sequence underlined India’s attacking depth, with the team finding ways to score through both set-piece situations and open-play combinations.

India added their tenth goal in the 46th minute when Jugraj converted a penalty corner. Mandeep completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute, stretching to turn in a cross from Aditya and make it 11-0. The forward’s three goals capped an outstanding scoring performance, while India continued to press for further additions despite the result being beyond doubt.

India saved two more goals for the closing stages. Hardik scored in the 60th minute after Bangladesh managed to block a penalty-corner attempt. Moments later, he found the net again after a move initiated by Harmanpreet, who passed to Dilpreet before the latter laid the ball off for Hardik to finish.

The final whistle confirmed a 13-0 victory, with Indian supporters waving the national tricolour in the stands as the hosts completed a perfect opening-day performance.

The match followed a glittering opening ceremony celebrating the return of international hockey to Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann unveiled the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 trophy and was felicitated by Asian Hockey Federation Vice President and Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh, along with Hockey Punjab President Nitin Kohli.

Traditional Punjabi performances, including Bhangra and Giddha, featured alongside Gatka demonstrations. Punjabi singer Ninja also performed, while music and fireworks added to the celebrations in Jalandhar.

Elsewhere on the opening day, Malaysia defeated China 5-4, while Japan beat South Korea 3-2.

India will next face China on October 29 at 7 PM IST, with October 28 designated as a rest day. The six teams will play each other once in the round-robin stage, with the top four advancing to the semifinals. The league matches will continue in Jalandhar until November 2, before the tournament moves to Mohali for the semifinals on November 4 and the medal matches on November 5.

India could hardly have asked for a stronger start to their title defence. The challenge now is to carry that scoring form into the remaining league fixtures.
