India Bounce Back in Uber Cup with Dominant 4-1 Win Over Ukraine

India’s women’s badminton team responded strongly after their opening defeat to Denmark, registering a convincing 4-1 victory over Ukraine in their second Group A tie at the BWF Uber Cup Finals 2026 in Horsens.
The win keeps India firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages, setting up a decisive clash against China in their final group encounter. Coming into the tie under pressure, India needed a composed and clinical performance and the young singles core delivered exactly that. Victories from Unnati Hooda, Tanvi Sharma, and Devika Sihag ensured that the tie was secured early, highlighting both depth and resilience within the squad.
India made a strong start through Unnati Hooda in the opening singles. Facing Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova, Hooda was pushed throughout but showed composure in crucial moments to secure a straight-game win, 21-19, 22-20. The scoreline reflected the intensity of the contest, with both games decided by fine margins. Hooda’s ability to manage pressure situations and close out tight rallies gave India the early advantage. The second singles match saw Tanvi Sharma extend India’s lead, though not without a challenge. Up against Yevheniia Kantemyr, Tanvi started confidently, taking the opening game 21-12 with controlled attacking play. However, Kantemyr responded in the second game, capitalising on errors to level the match at 17-21.
The decider showcased Tanvi’s adaptability. Regaining control, she raised her intensity and precision, dominating the third game 21-10 to seal the match. The victory not only gave India a 2-0 lead but also demonstrated Tanvi’s ability to recover momentum after a setback an important trait in team events.
With the tie within reach, Devika Sihag stepped onto the court for the third singles match and delivered a composed performance to clinch the result. Facing Mariia Stoliarenko, Devika was tested in the opening game, which extended into a tight finish before she edged it 23-21. Having gained the advantage, she controlled the second game more comfortably, winning 21-13 to seal India’s third point and confirm the tie. At 3-0, India had already secured victory, but the remaining matches offered an opportunity to strengthen the overall scoreline. The experienced pairing of PV Sindhu and Tanisha Crasto took on Sofiia Lavrova and Mariia Stoliarenko in the doubles contest. The Indian duo delivered a steady performance, winning in straight games 21-18, 21-15, further underlining the team’s dominance on the day.
Ukraine managed to pull one match back in the final doubles encounter. The Indian pair of Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi faced a strong Ukrainian combination and went down in straight games, 11-21, 17-21. While the result did not affect the outcome of the tie, it highlighted an area where India will look for greater consistency moving forward.
The overall result 4-1 in India’s favour represents a significant turnaround from their opening loss. More importantly, it reflects the team’s ability to respond under pressure, particularly through its singles players, who delivered all three decisive victories. From a tactical standpoint, India’s strength in singles continues to be a key advantage. Hooda, Tanvi, and Devika each displayed different strengths composure in tight finishes, adaptability across phases, and control in execution. Together, they provided the foundation for the team’s success in this tie.
The doubles results, however, present a mixed picture. While Sindhu and Tanisha secured a solid win, the loss in the second doubles match indicates the need for improved consistency, especially against stronger opposition. In team events like the Uber Cup, depth across all five matches often determines progression in the later stages. The focus now shifts to India’s final group match against China, a contest that will likely decide their qualification for the quarterfinals. China, with its depth across both singles and doubles, presents a significantly tougher challenge. For India, replicating the level of performance seen against Ukraine while also elevating their doubles game will be essential.
The win over Ukraine has provided momentum, but the margin for error against a top-tier side remains minimal. Each match in the tie will carry weight, and India will need contributions across the board to stay competitive. In the context of the tournament, this victory serves as a timely reminder of India’s potential. After a difficult start, the team has shown that it can regroup and deliver when required.
As the group stage reaches its decisive phase, India’s campaign now hinges on one final test. The response against Ukraine has kept their hopes alive what follows next will determine how far they can go.
