India’s men’s badminton team produced a spirited performance but fell narrowly short against defending champions China, losing 2-3 in their final Group A clash at the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2026 in Horsens, Denmark, on Wednesday.

Despite the defeat, India advanced to the quarterfinals after finishing second in the group behind China. Having already secured victories over Canada and Australia earlier in the tournament, both teams had already confirmed qualification to the knockout stage before Wednesday’s encounter. The tie, however, carried major significance as it would determine the Group A topper and potentially provide a more favourable quarterfinal draw.

While China ultimately emerged victorious, India pushed the defending champions hard across multiple matches, with Lakshya Sen and the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty both taking their contests into deciding games.

The narrow defeat once again highlighted India’s ability to compete with the world’s best teams, even though the final result did not go in their favour. India began the tie with Lakshya Sen taking on former All England champion Li Shi Feng in the opening singles match. Lakshya started confidently and stayed neck-and-neck with the Chinese shuttler throughout the opening game. The Indian looked sharp in the rallies and matched Li’s pace from the backcourt, but crucial errors at key moments allowed the Chinese player to edge the first game 21-19.

The second game saw a complete shift in momentum. Lakshya raised his intensity significantly, controlling the rallies with aggressive attacking strokes and sharp net play. The Indian completely dominated the game, cruising to a commanding 21-8 victory to force the match into a decider. However, Li Shi Feng responded strongly in the third game. The Chinese shuttler regained control of the rallies and forced Lakshya deeper into the court, limiting the Indian’s attacking opportunities. Lakshya struggled to maintain the same intensity from the second game and eventually lost the decider 12-21.

Despite the defeat, the Indian showed encouraging signs against one of the top singles players in the world.

The second match of the tie produced arguably the contest of the day as Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty faced the world-class Chinese pair of Liang Wei Kang and Wang Chang. The Indian pair struggled early and lost the opening game 13-21 as the Chinese duo dominated the exchanges with superior control and speed at the net.

But Satwik and Chirag responded brilliantly in the second game. The former Asian champions increased the tempo considerably, attacking aggressively and putting constant pressure on the Chinese pair. Their improved coordination and attacking play helped them level the match with a convincing 21-13 win. The deciding game turned into a tense thriller filled with momentum swings and dramatic rallies.

The Chinese pair appeared set to close out the match comfortably as they earned five match points. However, Satwik and Chirag displayed tremendous fighting spirit, saving all five to keep India alive in the contest. The Indian pair repeatedly forced the game back to level terms with fearless attacking play and strong defence under pressure. But after a marathon finish, Liang and Wang finally edged the decider 26-24 to hand China a crucial 2-0 lead. Although Satwik and Chirag ended on the losing side, their performance once again showed why they remain one of the world’s most dangerous men’s doubles combinations.

Ayush Shetty Keeps India Alive

With India trailing 0-2 and facing defeat in the tie, young shuttler Ayush Shetty stepped up impressively against world No. 15 Weng Hong Yang. The Asian Championships silver medallist lost the opening game 17-21 after a closely fought battle but showed remarkable composure to bounce back strongly.

Ayush played with far greater aggression in the second game, dictating the pace of rallies and forcing errors from the Chinese player. His attacking approach paid off as he took the game 21-13. The Indian youngster carried the momentum into the decider and continued to dominate with his sharp smashes and confident court coverage. He eventually sealed the match 21-15, putting India on the scoreboard and reducing the deficit to 1-2.

The victory was another strong statement from the emerging Indian talent, who has impressed throughout the tournament. India’s hopes of making a comeback rested on the shoulders of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun in the second men’s doubles match.

Facing He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu, the Indian pair fought hard in the opening game but struggled to consistently match the pace and quality of the Chinese duo. The Chinese pair eventually won 21-17, before dominating the second game 21-13 to seal the match and confirm China’s victory in the tie.

The result ensured China finished on top of Group A with an unbeaten record.

With the overall tie already decided, HS Prannoy delivered a strong performance in the final singles match against Lu Guang Zu. Prannoy narrowly lost the opening game 20-22 despite leading during key phases of the contest. However, the experienced Indian showed excellent resilience to fight back. He took the second game 21-19 in another close battle before dominating the decider 21-11 to finish the tie on a winning note for India.

The victory provided a positive ending for the Indian team heading into the knockout stage.

India now move into the quarterfinals as Group A runners-up after wins over Canada and Australia, along with their competitive showing against China. While the defeat denied them top spot, the overall performance against the defending champions will provide confidence going into the knockout rounds. Lakshya’s fight, Satwik-Chirag’s near upset, Ayush Shetty’s impressive victory, and Prannoy’s experience highlighted the depth and quality within the Indian squad.

The challenge now becomes tougher, but India have once again shown they possess the ability to challenge the world’s best teams at the Thomas Cup stage.
