India Make Strong Start in Men's Artistic Gymnastics at Commonwealth Games 2026

India enjoyed a promising opening day in the men's artistic gymnastics competition at the Commonwealth Games 2026, finishing at the top of the team standings after the completion of the first two subdivisions. 

The quartet of Tapan Mohanty, Yogeshwar Singh, Swathish Kaitheri Puthalath and Tapeswaranath Das delivered consistent performances across all six apparatus, while Tapan and Yogeshwar kept themselves firmly in contention for places in the men's all-around final.

With a cumulative score of 208.550, India led the standings after two subdivisions, ahead of Bangladesh (161.350) and Singapore (151.950). However, the Indian gymnasts now face an anxious wait as traditional gymnastics powerhouses including England, Australia, Canada, Scotland, Wales and Cyprus are set to compete in the final subdivision.

India's campaign began on the floor exercise, where Tapan Mohanty produced the strongest routine among the Indian trio competing on the apparatus. Tapan earned 12.150, comprising a Difficulty Score (D-score) of 4.700 and an Execution Score (E-score) of 7.450, giving India a solid opening. Yogeshwar Singh attempted a more difficult routine with a D-score of 5.000, but a half-point penalty reduced his total to 10.600 despite a clean routine for much of the performance.

Tapeswaranath Das found the opening apparatus challenging, managing 9.500 after receiving 4.600 for difficulty and 4.900 for execution.

While the scores were modest, India recovered well as the competition progressed.

The pommel horse tested the Indian gymnasts once again. Yogeshwar Singh produced a composed routine before an awkward dismount slightly affected his overall score. He finished with 11.100, including 4.000 in difficulty and 7.100 in execution. Tapan Mohanty followed with 9.850, reflecting a lower difficulty level of 2.700 despite an execution score of 7.150.

Making history as Kerala's first-ever gymnast selected for the Commonwealth Games, Swathish Kaitheri Puthalath impressed with a confident display, earning 10.300. Tapeswaranath Das suffered an early dismount but recovered admirably by repeating the missed skill before completing the routine. He eventually scored 7.200.

India produced one of its strongest rotations on the rings. Swathish Kaitheri Puthalath led the way with the highest Indian score on the apparatus, recording 12.450 after combining a 4.600 difficulty score with 7.850 execution. Tapan Mohanty followed closely with 12.100, while Yogeshwar Singh added 11.500.

Tapeswaranath Das also delivered a much-improved routine, scoring 11.100 thanks to an excellent execution score of 8.300. The consistency across all four gymnasts helped India strengthen its overall team position.

The vault proved particularly significant for Yogeshwar Singh and Tapeswaranath Das, both of whom completed two vaults as they chased qualification for the individual apparatus final. Yogeshwar averaged 12.600 across his two attempts, while Tapeswaranath recorded 12.075.

Whether those scores will be sufficient for a place in the vault final will only become clear after the completion of the final subdivision. Meanwhile, Tapan Mohanty and Swathish each performed a single vault as part of the team competition.

The Indian gymnasts continued their steady performances on the parallel bars. Yogeshwar Singh posted the highest score of the group with 12.750, earning an impressive 8.550 execution score. Tapan Mohanty was close behind on 12.700, producing one of his most polished routines of the day.

Tapeswaranath Das scored 10.000, contributing valuable points towards India's team total.

The narrow gap between Yogeshwar and Tapan underlined the consistency both gymnasts maintained throughout the competition.

India ended its campaign with encouraging performances on the horizontal bar. Yogeshwar Singh once again emerged as the top Indian performer, registering 12.650 through a combination of 4.400 difficulty and 8.250 execution. Tapan Mohanty concluded with 11.700, while Tapeswaranath Das finished on 11.450, ensuring India completed all six apparatus without major setbacks.

The final rotation reinforced the team's overall consistency, even if spectacular scores remained elusive.

Following the completion of two subdivisions, Tapan Mohanty occupied third place in the all-around standings with 71.700, while Yogeshwar Singh sat fourth with 71.400. Tapeswaranath Das finished the day in 11th place with a total of 61.000. Although both Tapan and Yogeshwar currently hold positions that would typically qualify for the all-around final, their places remain uncertain until the conclusion of Subdivision 3, which features several Commonwealth gymnastics heavyweights.

India Await Final Verdict

India's position at the top of the team standings after two subdivisions is encouraging, but the biggest challenge is yet to come.

England, Australia, Canada, Scotland, Wales and Cyprus all possess significantly deeper gymnastics programmes and are expected to post much higher totals when they compete later in the evening.

Nevertheless, India's performance has already demonstrated the progress the men's programme has made. The quartet delivered consistent routines across all six apparatus, avoided major errors after the early stages, and placed themselves in contention for both team honours and individual qualification.

The focus now shifts to the final subdivision, where India's gymnasts will anxiously watch to see whether Tapan Mohanty and Yogeshwar Singh can hold onto all-around final spots and whether the team's score of 208.550 is enough to keep them in medal contention. Regardless of the final outcome, the opening day's performance showcased encouraging depth and composure from India's men's artistic gymnastics squad on the Commonwealth Games stage.
