The Indian women's hockey team has quietly built one of the most remarkable records in recent international hockey. Across two appearances at the FIH Women's Hockey Nations Cup, India remains unbeaten, winning nine and drawing one of its 10 matches, while lifting the title on both occasions.

The achievement highlights India's consistency in one of the sport's most competitive second-tier tournaments, which serves as the qualification pathway to the prestigious FIH Pro League. Since the competition's inception in 2022, no team has matched India's combination of resilience, defensive solidity and attacking efficiency in the Nations Cup.

India first competed in the inaugural FIH Women's Hockey Nations Cup in Valencia, Spain, in 2022, where the team captured the title without suffering a defeat. After returning to the competition following relegation from the Pro League, India once again produced an unbeaten campaign in the 2026 edition in Auckland, New Zealand, reclaiming the trophy and earning immediate promotion back to the world's elite competition.

Across both tournaments, India's overall record reads:

  • Matches Played: 10

  • Wins: 9

  • Draws: 1

  • Losses: 0

  • Goals Scored: 25

  • Goals Conceded: 8

The only match India failed to win in regulation time came during the 2022 semifinal against Ireland, which finished level before India triumphed in the penalty shootout to book a place in the final. Officially, the match remains recorded as a draw, preserving India's unbeaten record.

The inaugural Nations Cup in Spain marked an important turning point for Indian women's hockey. Placed in a competitive group, India defeated Chile (3-1), Japan (2-1) and South Africa (2-0) to top the standings. The semi-final against Ireland proved to be India's toughest test of the tournament. After regulation time ended in a draw, experienced goalkeeper Savita Punia delivered during the shootout as India secured victory and progressed to the championship match.

India then edged hosts Spain 1-0 in the final thanks to a penalty corner conversion from Gurjit Kaur, lifting the inaugural title and securing promotion to the FIH Pro League.

Four years later, India returned to the Nations Cup determined to reclaim its place among the world's best teams. The campaign began with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the United States before narrow wins against Japan (2-1) and Uruguay (3-2) ensured a perfect group-stage record. India then produced its most dominant performance of the tournament, crushing Chile 6-0 in the semifinal. The final against hosts New Zealand showcased India's tactical maturity. Goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo secured a composed 2-0 victory, as the team completed another unbeaten tournament and booked its return to the Pro League.

India's success has been built on balance. While the attack has consistently delivered goals, the defensive unit has been equally impressive.

Across 10 Nations Cup matches, India has scored 25 goals, averaging 2.5 goals per game, while conceding only eight, an average of 0.8 goals per match. Those numbers underline a team capable of controlling matches without relying solely on high-scoring performances. The defensive leadership of Savita Punia, coupled with experienced defenders and disciplined midfield play, has allowed India to remain composed even in pressure situations.

Interestingly, India's unbeaten record spans two different coaching eras. The 2022 triumph came under Janneke Schopman, whose side relied on quick transitions, aggressive pressing and effective penalty corner routines. By 2026, Sjoerd Marijne had returned as head coach, bringing renewed emphasis on defensive organisation, structured counter-attacks and physical conditioning. Despite the tactical differences, the outcome remained the same—India lifted the Nations Cup trophy without losing a single match.

This continuity reflects the growing maturity of the Indian women's hockey programme rather than dependence on a particular coaching philosophy.

India's success has also been driven by the blend of experienced internationals and emerging talent. Veterans such as Savita Punia, Navneet Kaur, Neha Goyal, Nikki Pradhan and Lalremsiami have provided leadership across both tournaments. Meanwhile, younger players have stepped up impressively.

In the 2026 edition, Deepika Sehrawat emerged as one of the tournament's standout performers, finishing as the joint-highest scorer with six goals. Her penalty corner conversions and attacking presence played a major role in India's title-winning campaign.

The seamless integration of new players into the senior setup highlights Hockey India's increasingly effective player development pathway.

While the Nations Cup has become India's happy hunting ground, the bigger objective remains establishing itself among the world's elite teams in the FIH Pro League. Winning the Nations Cup twice demonstrates that India is among the strongest teams outside the Pro League. The next challenge is translating that consistency into victories against the world's top-ranked nations over a longer season. The unbeaten record in the Nations Cup provides confidence, but the Pro League will present tougher tactical and physical tests.

Still, India's performances over the past two editions suggest the team possesses both the depth and experience required to compete at the highest level.

With 10 matches unbeaten, two Nations Cup titles, 25 goals scored, and just eight conceded, the Indian women's hockey team has created a remarkable legacy in the tournament's short history. As they return to the Pro League once again, the Women in Blue will now aim to carry that winning mentality onto hockey's biggest international stage.
