The India national football team are facing a major logistical and tactical challenge ahead of the Unity Cup 2026, with the management now attempting to fast-track visas for five replacement players after the sudden withdrawal of seven Mohun Bagan Super Giant players from the squad.

Head coach Khalid Jamil and the team management have identified Mohammed Sanan, Ricky Meetei Haobam, Vikram Partap Singh, Macarton Louis Nickson and Lalremtluanga Fanai as emergency reinforcements ahead of India’s campaign in London. However, with India scheduled to face Jamaica national football team on May 26 and potentially Nigeria national football team or Zimbabwe national football team on May 30, the race against time for visa approvals has become a critical concern.

The situation emerged after seven Mohun Bagan players from the original squad were forced to leave the national camp before the Indian contingent departed for London on Sunday. The sudden exits significantly disrupted India’s preparations, especially because several of the withdrawn players occupied key midfield roles in Khalid Jamil’s tactical setup.

Among those unavailable are Anirudh Thapa, Lalengmawia Ralte and Sahal Abdul Samad three midfielders expected to play central roles during the tournament. Their absence leaves India short on creativity, ball retention and midfield control heading into matches against physically superior opposition. The development has reportedly left the All India Football Federation unhappy, particularly given the timing of the withdrawals and the limited preparation window available before the tournament.

Mohammed Sanan Earns Opportunity

Among the players identified as replacements, Mohammed Sanan appears one of the most logical additions. Sanan has previously worked extensively under Khalid Jamil at Jamshedpur FC and is viewed as one of the coach’s trusted young attacking players. A graduate of the Reliance Foundation Young Champs programme, Sanan enjoyed a strong season with Jamshedpur as the club reached the ISL 2024-25 semifinals and the Super Cup final.

His familiarity with Jamil’s pressing structure and tactical expectations could become particularly valuable given the limited preparation time before the Unity Cup begins.

Vikram Partap Singh is also set for a return to the national team environment. The forward last represented India during the 0-1 defeat against Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers and now has an opportunity to re-establish himself in the senior setup.

Known for his direct running and attacking aggression, Vikram offers pace in transition a quality India may rely heavily upon against stronger opponents like Jamaica and Nigeria. With India expected to spend significant periods defending, quick transitional forwards could become tactically important under Jamil.

India are also looking to strengthen midfield depth through Macarton Louis Nickson and Lalremtluanga Fanai. Macarton had previously earned his maiden senior national team call-up under former coach Manolo Marquez and is regarded as one of the technically reliable young midfielders emerging domestically.

Fanai, meanwhile, enjoyed an encouraging season with Bengaluru FC, registering four assists in 14 matches during the 2025-26 campaign. At just 21 years old, Fanai’s rise has been one of the more positive stories in Indian football recently. His creativity and energy could help compensate for the absence of senior midfielders.

Nineteen-year-old Ricky Meetei Haobam is another player expected to benefit from Khalid Jamil’s emphasis on youth integration. The former India U-20 captain has already built a reputation as one of the country’s most promising young defenders. He notably scored the winning goal for Bengaluru FC in the Reliance Foundation Development League final and has increasingly been viewed as part of India’s next defensive generation.

While he is unlikely to immediately become a starter, Ricky could play an important role as an impact substitute and developmental option during the tournament.

The Unity Cup was already expected to be a difficult assignment for India. Now, with late squad disruptions, emergency visa processes and limited preparation time, the challenge facing Khalid Jamil has become even more complicated. Beyond results, the tournament may now serve as an important test of squad adaptability and depth under the new coaching regime.

For Jamil, the situation also reinforces a broader reality of Indian football long-term national team progress depends not only on tactics and talent, but also on stronger structural coordination between clubs and country.
