India Smash First-Ever 200 at Women’s T20 World Cup as Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma Star in 95-Run Win Over Netherlands

India registered their first-ever 200-plus total in Women’s T20 World Cup history, defeating the Netherlands by 95 runs as Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma starred with the bat.
India continued their dominant start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a comprehensive 95-run victory over the Netherlands at Headingley, producing a record-breaking batting display and a clinical bowling performance to remain unbeaten in the tournament.
The Indian women’s team posted 209/5 in 20 overs, their highest-ever total in Women’s T20 World Cup history and the first time they have crossed the 200-run mark in the competition. Their previous best was 194/5 against New Zealand in the 2018 edition.
With the convincing victory following their 64-run win over Pakistan in the opening game, India now sit atop Group 1 with four points and an impressive net run rate of 3.975.
The foundation for the historic total was laid by opening pair Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who dominated the Dutch bowling attack from the outset. The duo raced to 59 runs during the powerplay and continued to score freely, bringing up the team’s century in the 11th over.
Shafali, known for her aggressive intent, reached her first half-century of the tournament in just 31 deliveries. She eventually departed after scoring a fluent fifty while attempting another big shot off Heather Siegers, but not before stitching together a 115-run opening partnership with Mandhana. The stand is now the third-highest opening partnership for India in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
Mandhana once again demonstrated her consistency on the big stage. After scoring a half-century against Pakistan in India’s opening fixture, the vice-captain followed it up with another commanding innings, bringing up her second successive fifty in just 36 balls. She accelerated after reaching the milestone and eventually made 74 from 47 deliveries before being dismissed by Caroline de Lange in the 16th over.
India briefly lost momentum following Mandhana’s dismissal. Jemimah Rodrigues fell in the next over, while Yastika Bhatia, included in the playing XI in place of Bharti Fulmali, was dismissed cheaply as the innings slipped from a commanding 162/1 to 168/4.
However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh ensured there would be no further collapse. The experienced pair steadied the innings before Deepti Sharma provided the finishing touches in spectacular fashion. Walking in for the final two deliveries, Deepti struck a six followed by a boundary, helping India collect 19 runs from the last over and finish on a record 209/5.
The total carried additional significance beyond Indian cricket. England remain the only other side to have crossed the 200-run mark in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup, having achieved the feat twice before.
For the Netherlands, Caroline de Lange emerged as the most successful bowler with figures of 2/32 despite the challenging conditions. Chasing 210 for victory was always going to require a near-perfect batting effort, and the Dutch side started positively through Heather Siegers and Phebe Molkenboer. The opening pair added useful runs before Nandani Sharma made the breakthrough by dismissing Siegers, claiming her maiden wicket in a Women’s T20 World Cup.
Deepti Sharma, who had starred with a five-wicket haul against Pakistan, continued her good form by removing Molkenboer. Netherlands captain Babette de Leede attempted to rebuild alongside Sterre Kalis, but India’s bowlers kept striking at regular intervals.
From a relatively stable 96/4, the Netherlands suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their final six wickets for just 18 runs to be bowled out for 114 in 17.3 overs. Left-arm spinner Shree Charani played a decisive role in dismantling the lower middle order, finishing with outstanding figures of 4/19. Three of her wickets came during a devastating 17th over that effectively ended any hopes of resistance.
Shafali Verma capped off an excellent all-round performance by contributing with the ball as well, claiming 3/20 to clean up the Dutch tail. Her contributions with both bat and ball highlighted the depth India possess in their current squad.
The emphatic victory not only strengthened India’s position at the top of Group 1 but also reinforced their credentials as one of the leading contenders for the title. Their batting unit has now produced consecutive commanding performances, while the bowling attack has consistently converted scoreboard pressure into wickets.
India will now turn their attention to a potentially tougher challenge against South Africa at Old Trafford on Sunday. Carrying momentum from two convincing victories and buoyed by a historic batting achievement, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side will look to continue their unbeaten run and edge closer to the knockout stages of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
