India Storm into Asian Games Hockey Semi-Finals After 7-0 Win Over Singapore

India's women's hockey team completed an unbeaten pool-stage campaign at the Asian Games 2026 with a commanding 7-0 victory over Singapore in Kakamigahara on Sunday. 

The result was India's fifth consecutive win and confirmed their position at the top of Pool B, setting up a semi-final against South Korea on September 30. Despite persistent rain and an overcast afternoon in the Gifu region, India controlled the contest for virtually its entirety. Singapore's compact defensive structure and goalkeeper Felissa Lai repeatedly frustrated the Indian attack early on, but India's sustained pressure eventually broke the resistance.

India's five pool-stage victories against Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Singapore produced a remarkable +63 goal difference. The only genuinely competitive match was against hosts Japan, whom India defeated 3-1.

The other semi-final will see China face Japan.

India immediately established territorial control and earned their first penalty corner inside the opening minute after Lalremsiami forced a foot from a Singapore defender. Deepika stepped up for the drag-flick, but the attempt was deflected away.

India earned another penalty corner in the second minute following a successful video referral, but Singapore once again survived. The pressure continued throughout the opening quarter. India created opportunities through combinations between Ishika and captain Salima Tete, while Singapore defended with almost the entire unit behind the ball.

More than five penalty corners came India's way during the opening quarter, yet none produced a goal. Singapore's resistance was being reinforced by goalkeeper Felissa Lai, who repeatedly positioned herself well to deny India's forwards. The first quarter ended goalless, but India's dominance in possession and territory suggested that the breakthrough was only a matter of time.

The breakthrough finally arrived two minutes into the second quarter. Navneet's first-time effort from a cross was saved by Lai, but the rebound fell to Salima Tete. The Indian captain reacted quickly, finding space and putting India ahead in the 17th minute. Once the opening goal arrived, India's attack became far more effective.

Five minutes later, another penalty corner created chaos inside the Singapore circle. Sunelita Toppo was quickest to react and applied the finishing touch from close range to double India's advantage. Toppo then struck again just two minutes later. Deepika's penalty-corner flick was met by Toppo, who made a sharp run towards the near post and produced a deft deflection to make it 3-0.

India's fourth followed in the 26th minute. Deepika's flick took a deflection off Lalremsiami's stick and found the back of the net. Three minutes later, Singapore conceded again after a defensive error presented Rutuja Dadaso Pisal with an opening. Rutuja showed composure to lift the ball beyond Lai and make it 5-0. India had scored five times in the second quarter alone, transforming a frustrating opening 15 minutes into a one-sided contest.

Singapore limits the damage after half-time

Singapore returned from the interval determined to prevent the scoreline from escalating further. India nevertheless found a sixth goal in the 35th minute. Two successive penalty corners were not dealt with cleanly, allowing Baljeet to recover the ball and keep the attack alive. The resulting scramble eventually ended with Nikki Pradhan forcing the ball over the line.

Singapore's defensive structure then settled again. Lalremsiami came close twice in the 40th and 42nd minutes, but Lai dealt with both attempts. India continued to win penalty corners towards the end of the third quarter but could not convert them.

The pattern continued into the final quarter. Singapore managed to keep India scoreless for the opening 10 minutes of the period, while Deepika saw another penalty-corner attempt saved by the goalkeeper.

India's seventh goal arrived in the 55th minute. Another penalty corner gave Deepika the opportunity she had been waiting for, and this time the Indian drag-flicker made no mistake. She picked out the corner with precision to make it 7-0. Deepika had another chance from a penalty corner shortly afterwards but could not add an eighth.

Singapore then created its best opportunity of the match when Qian Xiao Kwek found herself one-on-one with Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi following a turnover. The chance went wide, ensuring India completed the match without conceding. The final whistle confirmed India's 7-0 victory and a perfect five-win pool-stage record.

India's reward for topping Pool B is a semi-final against South Korea on September 30. South Korea secured second place in Pool A after defeating Malaysia 2-1 earlier in the day. The other semi-final will feature China against Japan. For India, the focus now shifts from pool-stage dominance to knockout hockey, where one result will determine whether the team progresses to the gold-medal match.

The numbers from the pool stage underline India's attacking strength. Five victories produced 63 more goals than they conceded, while the 3-1 win over Japan represented their closest contest. Against Singapore, India demonstrated another important quality: patience.

They had numerous opportunities in the opening quarter without finding the breakthrough but continued to apply pressure rather than abandoning their attacking structure. Once Salima opened the scoring, India converted that territorial dominance into five goals before half-time.

With the semi-final against South Korea now confirmed, India's unbeaten campaign enters its most important stage. The pool phase is complete, but the medal battle is only beginning.
