The India national football team have suffered another major setback ahead of the Unity Cup 2026 after defender Anwar Ali was officially ruled out of the tournament due to injury concerns.

Anwar was not part of the travelling contingent that departed for London on Sunday, further weakening an already depleted Indian squad preparing for a difficult international assignment against higher-ranked opposition. The development comes at a challenging time for the Blue Tigers, who are already dealing with significant squad disruption following the withdrawal of multiple Mohun Bagan Super Giant players before departure.

India are scheduled to face Jamaica national football team on May 27 in their opening Unity Cup fixture at The Valley in London.

Anwar’s absence represents a serious tactical loss for the Indian team. Over the last few years, the defender has become one of the most important figures in India’s backline because of his composure in possession, progressive passing ability and defensive anticipation.

Unlike traditional centre-backs who rely primarily on physical defending, Anwar offers India the ability to build attacks from deep areas an increasingly important aspect of modern international football. His partnership with Sandesh Jhingan had also provided India with greater defensive balance during recent international campaigns.

Without Anwar, India now lose both defensive stability and one of their best ball-progressing defenders ahead of matches where the team is likely to spend long periods under pressure.

The injury setback adds to a growing list of complications surrounding India’s Unity Cup preparations. The squad travelling to London initially consisted of just 17 players after several Mohun Bagan footballers were recalled from the national camp before departure. The situation has already forced head coach Khalid Jamil and the team management to urgently explore replacement options while simultaneously managing fitness concerns within the existing squad.

Now, with Anwar unavailable and Ashique Kuruniyan also reportedly dropped due to fitness issues, India’s depth has become even thinner.

The absence of experienced players in multiple positions leaves Khalid Jamil facing one of his toughest early assignments since taking charge of the national team. Amid the uncertainty, there was at least some positive news for India as Jeakson Singh Thounaojam and Edmund Lalrindika continue with the squad despite the disruptions involving Mohun Bagan players.

Jeakson’s presence is particularly important because India’s midfield options have already been heavily affected by recent withdrawals. Known for his defensive positioning and aerial ability, Jeakson will likely play a central role in shielding the defence against physically strong opposition like Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Edmund Lalrindika’s inclusion provides additional attacking flexibility. The forward has steadily grown within the national setup and could become an important option in transition-based attacking systems under Khalid Jamil.

India’s Squad for Unity Cup

India’s travelling squad for the Unity Cup currently includes:

Goalkeepers:
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Hrithik Tiwari, Albino Gomes

Defenders:
Rahul Bheke, Nikhil Poojary, Roshan Singh Naorem, Sandesh Jhingan, Akash Mishra, Bijoy Varghese, Pramveer

Midfielders:
Jeakson Singh Thounaojam, Noufal PN, Ricky Shabong

Forwards:
Ryan Williams, Edmund Lalrindika, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Rahim Ali, Farukh Choudhary

The Unity Cup was always expected to be a difficult tournament for India given the quality of opposition. Jamaica possess greater athleticism, physicality and international exposure, while potential opponents Nigeria or Zimbabwe would present equally demanding challenges. Now, with injuries, player withdrawals and limited preparation time affecting the squad, Khalid Jamil’s task has become even more complicated. Tactically, India may now need to adopt a more conservative structure focused on defensive compactness and counter-attacking opportunities.

The absence of Anwar Ali especially could influence how India attempt to play out from the back, potentially forcing the team into a more direct approach.

Beyond immediate results, the current situation also raises larger questions around coordination, player management and scheduling within Indian football. The combination of club withdrawals, injury concerns and last-minute squad reshuffling has left the national team far from ideal preparation standards ahead of an important international window.

For India, the Unity Cup may now become less about results alone and more about resilience, adaptability and evaluating the next generation of players under difficult circumstances.
