India U17 Hold Qatar Twice Ahead Of AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026

The Indian U17 men’s football team concluded its preparation for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 on a positive note, holding Qatar to a goalless draw in the second of two closed-door international friendlies in Doha on Tuesday.
The match, played at the Suheim bin Hamad Stadium, followed another encouraging result earlier in the week where the Blue Colts had drawn 1-1 against the same opposition. Across both matches, India showed defensive discipline, improved game management, and signs of growing confidence ahead of the continental tournament beginning next month in Saudi Arabia. For head coach Bibiano Fernandes and his staff, the two matches against a strong West Asian opponent provided valuable exposure at a crucial stage of preparation.
India will now shift full focus toward the AFC U17 Asian Cup, where they have been drawn in a challenging Group D alongside Australia and defending champions Uzbekistan.
The second friendly ended in a 0-0 stalemate, with India producing a compact and organised defensive performance against Qatar. Although the match was played behind closed doors, the result underlined India’s ability to remain disciplined against technically strong opposition. The Blue Colts managed to keep a clean sheet throughout the contest, something that will certainly boost the confidence of the young squad heading into the Asian Cup.
The Indian defence looked far more settled compared to earlier preparation matches this year, with the players showing improved communication and positional awareness throughout the game. Qatar attempted to dominate possession during phases of the match, but India remained compact defensively and limited clear-cut opportunities. The midfield also worked hard off the ball, helping shield the defensive line and frustrate the hosts.
The draw capped off a productive training camp in Doha for the Indian side, who have been working intensively ahead of one of the biggest tournaments in youth Asian football.
Denny Singh’s Goal Earned India Draw In First Match
India had already shown promising signs in the opening friendly against Qatar on April 25. That match ended 1-1 after the Blue Colts produced a spirited display against the hosts at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium. After a tightly contested first half, India broke the deadlock in the 67th minute through Denny Singh Wangkhem. The youngster capitalised on a positive attacking move to give India the lead and put pressure on the Qatari side.
The goal reflected India’s willingness to attack whenever opportunities emerged rather than simply sitting back defensively. For long periods after taking the lead, India managed the game well and looked on course for a memorable win. However, Qatar eventually found an equaliser in the 82nd minute to rescue the draw. Despite conceding late, the overall performance was viewed as a positive outing for the Indian side, especially considering the quality and physicality of the opposition. The two friendlies formed a key part of India’s final preparations for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026.
The tournament will serve as one of the biggest tests for the current batch of Indian youngsters, who qualified impressively for the continental event. India have been placed in Group D and will begin their campaign against Australia on May 6 in Jeddah. They will then face Uzbekistan on May 10 in what is expected to be another difficult encounter. With DPR Korea having reportedly withdrawn from the tournament, the group situation has changed significantly, but the challenge remains substantial for the Blue Colts.
Australia and Uzbekistan both possess strong youth football structures and have consistently performed well at the continental level. India will therefore need to maintain defensive solidity while also being clinical in attacking situations if they hope to progress.
While results in friendly matches are never the primary focus, India’s performances against Qatar will certainly offer encouragement. The team showed resilience across both games, avoided defeat, and demonstrated that they can compete against quality Asian opposition. Importantly, the squad gained valuable match practice under competitive conditions before entering the high-pressure environment of the Asian Cup. The defensive organisation in particular stood out during the two games. Keeping Qatar to just one goal across 180 minutes reflects the discipline and structure the coaching staff has tried to instil into the side.
At the same time, players like Denny Singh also showed that India possesses attacking players capable of making an impact in key moments.
With the preparation phase now complete, the Blue Colts will turn their full attention toward the tournament in Saudi Arabia. India’s opening match against Australia could prove crucial in determining their chances of progressing from the group stage. A positive start would significantly boost confidence before the tougher encounter against Uzbekistan. The performances against Qatar may not have generated headlines due to the closed-door nature of the games, but within the Indian camp, the results will likely be seen as an important step in building belief ahead of the continental challenge.
For a young Indian side preparing to compete against Asia’s best, these two draws against Qatar offered both experience and momentum at exactly the right time.
