India U20 Defeat Singapore 3-0 in Friendly as AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers Preparation Gathers Momentum

The India U20 men's football team began its preparations for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers in encouraging fashion with a convincing 3-0 victory over Singapore U20 in the first of two closed-door international friendlies at the Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday.
Goals from Rishi Singh Ningthoukhongjam, Shami Singamayum, and a late own goal by Singapore ensured the Blue Colts secured a comfortable win in a match that offered head coach Mahesh Gawali valuable insights ahead of the continental qualifiers later this month.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday, August 6, in another closed-door fixture before India departs for Uzbekistan, where the qualifiers will be held from August 31 to September 6.
Despite being played behind closed doors, the opening friendly served as an important competitive test for the Indian squad following weeks of preparation. The Blue Colts controlled much of the contest and were rewarded just before halftime. Midfielder Rishi Singh Ningthoukhongjam broke the deadlock in second-half stoppage time of the opening period, giving India a deserved 1-0 lead in the 45+2nd minute.
The goal allowed India to enter the break with confidence after a disciplined first-half display. Singapore attempted to respond after the restart, but India continued to dictate proceedings. In the 63rd minute, Shami Singamayum doubled India's advantage, effectively placing the hosts in complete control of the contest.
The visitors' difficult evening was compounded late in the match when they inadvertently turned the ball into their own net in the 83rd minute, sealing a comprehensive 3-0 victory for the Blue Colts. The clean sheet will be equally pleasing for the coaching staff, highlighting the team's defensive organisation alongside its attacking efficiency.
The Singapore friendlies form a crucial part of India's preparations for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers, where the Blue Colts face a challenging group in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. India will begin its qualification campaign against Syria on August 31, followed by matches against hosts Uzbekistan on September 3 and neighbours Bangladesh on September 6.
With limited opportunities for international competition before such important tournaments, the two matches against Singapore provide Mahesh Gawali and his coaching staff with an ideal platform to evaluate combinations, assess player fitness and fine-tune tactical plans.
The second friendly on August 6 is expected to feature further squad rotation as India continues building towards the qualifiers.
Indian Squad for friendly.
For the Singapore friendlies, head coach Mahesh Gawali selected a 30-member squad, combining players from across the country who have impressed at youth level. The goalkeeping department includes Jaskaran Dub, Pranav Sundarraman, Shuhaid Koya Thangal, and Suraj Singh Aheibam. India's defensive unit features players such as Arshvir Singh, Asher Rebello, Ashik Adhikari, Bungson Singh Takhellambam, Karish Soram, Malemngamba Singh Thokchom, Sumit Sharma Brahmacharimayum, and Yaipharemba Chingakham.
The midfield boasts several technically gifted players, including goalscorers Rishi Singh Ningthoukhongjam and Shami Singamayum, alongside Aniket Yadav, Danny Meitei Laishram, Rishikanta Meitei Laishram, Levis Zangminlun, Samson Ahongshangbam, and others.
The attacking options include Agastya Bhat, Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam, Hateem Ali, Nirupam Gowda, Omang Dodum, Prashan Jajo, Rohen Singh Chaphamayum, Vishal Yadav, and Yohaan Benjamin.
Supporting Gawali are assistant coach MG Ramachandran, goalkeeping coach Parshuram Salwadi, and strength and conditioning coach Anugrah Suresh.
India's victory also extended its favourable record against Singapore at the youth level. The two nations first met in the AFC Youth Championship in 1966, where India recorded an impressive 4-1 victory. Their second competitive meeting came during India's memorable 1974 AFC Youth Championship-winning campaign, when the Blue Colts eliminated Singapore in the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout.
More recently, the sides contested two U19 international friendlies in Goa in 2017. India dominated the first encounter with a 7-2 victory, while Singapore responded by winning the second match 1-0. The latest 3-0 success ensures India maintains its strong overall record against the Southeast Asian nation at youth level.
Beyond the result itself, the friendly served another important purpose. With a large squad competing for limited places in the final travelling contingent, every player understands that performances in these preparation matches could influence selection for the qualifiers.
The coaching staff will closely analyse not only technical quality but also tactical discipline, fitness levels and adaptability across both matches against Singapore. Healthy competition within the squad is expected to raise standards as India prepares for one of its biggest youth assignments of the year.
While the convincing victory offers plenty of encouragement, the Indian camp will be mindful that the tougher challenges still lie ahead. The second friendly against Singapore provides another valuable opportunity to refine combinations before attention turns fully towards the AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers. For Mahesh Gawali, the performance reflected many positives clinical finishing, defensive solidity and encouraging teamwork but there will still be areas to improve before facing stronger opposition in Tashkent.
With confidence growing following the 3-0 victory, the Blue Colts have made an ideal start to their preparations. If they continue building on this performance over the coming weeks, India will travel to Uzbekistan believing it has the quality to compete strongly for qualification to the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027.
